can i ask? how do u teach him not to fly around without clipping their wings out of their cage? in a closed room with they be hard to get bck on ur finger once they are let out?
@1QueenMom1 It's harder to get two budgies who've been interacting with each other to interact with you. Usually, if people want to be really close with their budgies, they keep just one. However, I'm sure it's possible. About.Com has lots of helpful guides on birds... I'm thinking about getting one and that is my trunk for research.
@1QueenMom1 WOW, the previous owners weren't nice at all!! Start with putting your hand next to the cage for 10 minute sessions every day, reading a book or listening to quiet music. Do these sessions 6 times a day. Put your hand closer each day, and then on top of the cage, then inside it on the bottom perch. This all should take around 8 days. Ignore the if they panic, they'll get used to your hand! Then give them food in your hand, and on the 18th day, let them out!
@1QueenMom1 3 years is a long time for a budgie to get used to its environment. They don't know what it's like to fly around. Not sure how easy it is to lure them out. They're probably scared of humans. If they do come out, be really careful about windows. Even with them closed they might bump into them.
Hes Adorable ... May be you could help me here since you have such a beautiful one ..
i baught two budgies from a pet shop who said they are about 12 weeks old. I've had them for about two weeks now i put them in a relatively large cage with fresh seeds and water. they are lovely and they seem to get along but they get a little bit scared when i approach them or when i put my hand in their cage. and they sing only for a few minutes ans then they go quite.. so is there anything wrong??
@alhilou Yea if they are nervous they usually stop chirping. Usually if you get a few budgies and put them in a cage they mingle amongst themselves stay wary of humans.
Your budgie is soo adorable, but in soooo much danger!! If he loves being outside, please build him an aviary where he can at least be safe, if he takes off, the wild birds will rip him to bits, and even if he dosent take off, he is so vulnerable to other flighted or none flighted predators. His safety and well-being is totally in your hands, I can see he looks so healthy and well cared for, please dont let him down over this one issue!
Hes adorable! Just to say that even though he doesnt fly away.. just be a little bit careful e.g. a car back fire or a random loud noise or even a cat could scare him off and you would lose him. Most budgies are lost and fly even higher because of wind etc.. most dont come back as they dont know their way back but since your bird is used to this it may not happen like that.
Just to say that others shouldnt do this just incase.
man i cant get my budgie to come out of the cage and she is tame but a stray cat got my other two budgie's she hasn't been the same since what should i do please help
@Rihannaa0 Actually, he can technically fly away if he wanted to, but he doesn't. His wings are full but he has no intention to leave. We've had him since birth.
Yeah, this is the most comfortable position for them when they are sleeping or relaxed. Mine do it too and they sing along before they sleep. Really cool :)
Just cos we put them in cages doesn't mean they can't fly. i let my budgies out for like 4 hours a day or more!
A bird is born with wings, its like strapping you in a wheelchair when you got perfectly healthy legs and sayin there ya go - just so ya dont go running off. still up to you i guess. i don't agree that it doesnt hurt the birds self esteem - not being able to do what they are naturally born to do.
There is nothing wrong with clipping a birds wings. Its a personal decision for the owner if they only want the bird to be able to fly to a certain height.
O.o well ill cut off your legs and say.. theres nothing wrong with it... its a personal decision for the owner if they only want you to be able to run with maximium 10 km/h -.-
I think that we would cut our babies legs and hands of at first if the limbs grew back every year or half a year. Since Budgies get their feathers back it's not the same comparison.
It dosn't have to be that he thinks its a female budgie, they puke up food for friends too, but yea it could think its a female budgie too xD Budgies ftw
help i cliiped my new bird wing and it started to bleed like i had three bird which i clipped before n it never happen like this like i feel sorry for my bird i need some help
lol thats not good. they can die from the slightest loss of blood...especiall if they get a cut on their feet or if they break a nail fAR BACK and bleed THEILL DIE.. its crazy..
The parakeet has 2 legs..But since they have to stand on them all day, they get tired so they rest their leg but not standing on it and hiding it beneth their feathers.
Actually he has two. Anyone with a parakeet (or a basic knowledge of birds in general) knows that they like to retract one of their feet to give it a rest every once in a while.
I don't know about you, but the parakeet I happen to have showed up in my yard one day, I talked him out of the tree and made him part of the family after EXHAUTIVELY searching for his real home. I clipped his wings immediately. He had had them clipped but just enough feathers grew back for him to fly away. Keep up on this if you don't want to risk losing your baby! Mine is almost as lucky as I am that he came to my yard!
Many of my budgies are rescued, either by me or other people who then gave them to me. I don't like clipping their wings, and I live in an apartment where they have a room of their own so there is little chance of escape, but if there is any risk your bird could escape, do clip. Even brief exposure to wild birds can cause a tame bird to sicken and die.
How do you take your budgie outside?! You're so lucky. My budgie is so spastic. We've had her for months and she doesn't like coming out of her cage for some reason. My moms friend whom is another animal lover said she may feel more secure in there..

the best thing 2 do if u want it 2 like u is take it out of the cage and teach it stuff let it sit on ur shoulder and stuff like that and it will after a while trust u really well like my 4 budgies do
my budgies also started off biting my finger until they bleed and u get the message it hurt heaps but now the like u heaps after u play with em and teach em stuff try it see if it likes u it should work and btw if it flies away frm u trim its wings back a bit it stops it frm getting away frm u so u cant catch it
Ye how the hell u get ur budgie 2 stay still i scared cuz my budgie crash lands everywere once he hit the Tv!!!!!! i scared also cuz my budgie could fly into the fire place i dont want that
O and my Budgie is the same colour as This 1 He called Kimmy cuz i thought he was a girl lol
Yeah, unless you want to clip their wings, letting them out of the cage can be dangerous. I only clip my budgies wings when I first get them and am training them. RE names: I like to use Italian names, like Papageno, Tamino, etc. If they turn out to be a girl, you just change the final "o" to an "a" and it's feminine! So it's Papagena and Tamina.
I have had my budgie now for several months now and cannot get him out of the cage. the most i can do is rub his belly and scratch his neck (only sometimes tho) how do i get him more tame???
do you know that when birds bop their heads up and down like that it means they are showing affection? Either the bird just had instinct popup, or (most likely!)your bird loves you! :)
we have a screen house thing but i am still scared he would get out never to be seen again .I would love to do this .I did with the wings cliped when we first got him but never again.I like it when he flys he lands on my sholder and says what's ya doin to cute.
I have a budgie too. :) But... I dont think I can do what you did with ur budgie. Let him outside... WoW ! How do you train them to stay outside? Can u give us a link with a special site with suggestions?
heyyy dis is soo cute.. but how come he's outtsidee?? I mean im sure they fly awayy when outsside... Mine did :(

For some people they clip the wings for safetys sake. Like I said, its a personal decision, and it does not hurt the bird at all.

do you know that when birds bop their heads up and down like that it means they are showing affection? Either the bird just had instinct popup, or (most likely!)your bird loves you! :)
