When I lived in Boston, I would hear Gonz and Goodrick all the time. Neussbaum, Caldarzzo, even Abercrombie would come up and play the Willow, Summerville
Theatre or Scullers. Amazing stuff - always killin it, even at small clubs. George Garzone is another great Boston Tenor. And check out bassist Bruce Gertz - he accompanies Bergonzi all the time. Long live the Gonz . . .
Classic Gonz.i love it.Met him a few times socially,he has a bag of hilarious jokes up his sleeve too!!Does anyone know which album this was recorded on if any??.Is it jerry's composition??
Ahhh Jerry!!!! Absolutely amazing!!! Don't you just love those really typical Bergonzi phrases? Both Bergonzi and Brecker fill most of my "if I was stuck on a desert island..." play list. Great post, thanks.
@ACEsAndBb definitely a selmer lig and its an old link, kind of looks like it has the flared end like the one coltrane's got on the cover of blue train....i love that he's even playing an SBA, so there's the possibility that he's playing the same kind of sax and mouthpiece and yet they sound NOTHING alike while still both sounding un-freakin-BELIEVABLE!
I don't think his phrasing is similar to Tristano, but I get your point! ;) They are both incredible musicians with a vast knowledge of harmonic and rhythmic possibilities, as well as having a lot of feeling and lyricism in their playing. I think Mick is an amazing guitarist, just because of his phrasing and approach to the instrument. On top of that, he is such a pure improviser. He's all about music and I think his personality really shines through his playing.
Jerry plays every wednesday night at the Acton Jazz Cafe in Massachusetts. check it out... its absolutely amazing (youd pretty much be as close as the cameras in this video)
Mick is no slouch simply amazing. Jerry is great as always. And let us not forget the solid section playing of Richmand and Nussbaum. More video footage of these guys please.
deknow seem not having much "know", if you have asked Bergonzi about Mick's solos, he would share this "knowledge" you don't have.MICK GOODRICK is a Genius.Jerry Bergonzi is my favorite saxophone player
The Bergonz simply great. One of the nicest guys in the business too.

You might like Mick Goodricks Sunscreams which features both Goodrick and Bergonzi. The sound is pretty similiar.

nottscountyrock 3 years ago
It´s looks like old "otto link" "tone master" with "selmer" "keeper" but even the best of the best mouthpiece not play itself

haha yeah jerry has a great tone anyway imo!

Closest thing to Tristano on guitar was Billy Bauer, and even that is a stretch.

Would you say that Mick Goodrick is the Lennie Tristano of guitar?!

Bergonzi is the man. I had a chance to hang out with him for a day this summer and what a sweet guy. I learned a lot just talking to him.

As great as Mick probably is, his solo left me a little cold. Compared to the sax solo it seemed very mechanical and passionless.

Playing favourites is stupid. They're ALL monsters. Anyone who doesn't get Gerry's greatness obviously doesn't know anything about playing saxophone.

I dialed this up for Mick-he's pure gold-But Nussbaum kicked my ass! Solid,in the pocket swingin' and loose. Man I love it!
