:) i remember i was there that year and 2009. I was sitting by the rope to get a closeup view and Teddy came galloping by, and he was close to the rope, which where i was sitting, and he had to be only five feet away :) it was amazing and breathtaking to be just so near the wonder poony! RIP
god 2 horses died in '08 and one rider badly injured and one horse died yesterday in '09 just on the cross country course on rolex. you'd think the course designers would get a hint!
i was there for the horse that died at cross country, it wasn't the jump, his heart failed and died basically, the course wasn't hard this year, i saw 3 or 4 falls and susie beale was the only one that retired during cross country[from refusals] other than that only one rider went to the hospital this year.
The course is renowned for being difficult, I don't mean to sound cruel or anything but people enter, knowing full well that their horse, or even theirselves could be injured or killed in the event. It can happen on any course, besides, it's not necessarily the designer's fault, you don't know the underlying problems the horses have, or what went wrong to cause the death/injury, things like this happen in any sport.
I think there are riders who don't prepare there horses properly for the event. There have been horses that have died of heart attacks, either it was unavoidable or the rider did not know quite how hard to train, I know someone who was disqualified for going off course. Which is just pathetic. There are people that qualify but once they get there can't 'keep up'. It's not the course designers fault.
