At firts: The Degu is no relative of the chinchilla, but of the guineapig.
At second: This is not a sign of seeking attention. This noise can be a sign of fear. But the other degu's do not react on it. Becourse of their close bands as a group, they all will react when one is scared. My older male sometimes makes this noise too. I believe, and this is personal, that it can mean that they have some pain in their belly/intestines.
I think that its abit scared,Their eye sight is amazing and can generally see things we cannot, a sign of alarm is the postion f the ear also... Wondering if its alarmed by the cloth moving as he cannot see whats causing it? Very cute thou, does he still do it?
Aaaw, they are cute. He's chirped at the movement behind th black cloth.. lol Mine make little soft, bird chirp-like sounds. They've never done what yours was doing. Cute. lol
normally males whistle to let you know their puppies have been born or after a successful mating (after an unsuccessful one, they whistle disappointedly). Degus also whistle if they are scared, and sometimes they beep without any apparent reason.... so take your pick what it is
Ever try duct tape?

My Degus usually do this when my grandmother walks into my room. They're afaid of her for some reason.
When mine do it, if I pick them up and pet them, they stop right away. I guess I calm them down. :)
