Everywhere I look on YouTube I find these arguments, a is better than b etc. Why can't people understand that music is so subjective that agreement is impossible. It isn't just a question of personal taste either, the human ear is not an oscilloscope registering pure frequencies, we all hear things slightly differently and so a tone that appeals to my ear will grate on your nerves and vice versa. Why can't we all just like what we like and allow others to like what they like?
im sorry they are sining in a completerly different style than wicked and i think it is awesome that they are not competetive over it abd this is just mind blowing
I think they're both amazing but I will always prefer Idina because she was such an amazing Elphaba! Her voice is a lot more distinctive than Kerry's.

Idina.....the only beef I have with her and her fans is that she's always "sick", but she may legitimately have been sick during this performance.
On the whole, Kerry's tone and delivery is much more listenable. Their voices don't really go together. Idina by herself in a studio version would be good, and the same with Kerry. But this is a little forced pairing. And whoever cast this concert....they should know that their tones don't go very well together.

Every time I hear music from 'Chess', I am astounded that such lovely and memorable music cale from, what I think was/is a not so great, musical. The music is so moving, so personal, so present, but the show itself, left me flat; in London, NY, Sydney, I saw it 3 times, it left me humming the tunes, but forgetting the characters and story. Only song which to really dislike, is the one that made it to #1, 'One Night in Bangkok'! Menzel is great as is Ellis. Great rendition of original.

I LOVE Idina Menzel SO much, and I don't know much about Kerry Ellis, but I think the song is just better suited for Kerry's vocal tone. I think you may be misunderstanding the meaning of the word "overpowering" in relation to vocal performance, it does not really mean volume but its strength, clarity, diction, tune, timbre, power, emotion and of course acting. So when the people above said that Kerry's voice was overpowering they did in fact include Kerry's fine acting performance as well as Idinas acting performance (note the lack of "fine") when they said Kerry's performance overpowered Idinas.
I really enjoyed Sutton Foster and Julia Murney's version a bit more. I prefer the darker voice to contrast a bit more.
That, and Idina's voice never quite did it for me. It always grated my nerves a little. That said, I can respect her as a performer, but given the choice, I'd take the Foster/Murney combo first.

I'm a huge Kerry and don't usually like Idina but I thought Idina was stunning in this, singing and acting! She really shocked me. Loved kerry as well!!!

You really think that was Idina?? It's called characterisation you dumbass. Lack of power? haha Idina is a Broadway powerhouse what are you talking about?? This is far from Idinas best role to date (that's between Maureen, Kate or Elphaba) but she wasn't bad; just miscast. She would have been better as Svetlana.

I don't know if I'd agree that it required no acting but I thought it was appropriately acted. Acting doesn't always require moving all over.
Also - I think that people are forgetting that this was meant to be a concert setting that was not a FULL OUT production.
Bravo to both Idina and Kerry - love them both!

I think you may be misunderstanding the meaning of the word "overpowering" in relation to vocal performance, it does not really mean volume but its strength, clarity, diction, tune, timbre, power, emotion and of course acting. So when the people above said that Kerry's voice was overpowering they did in fact include Kerry's fine acting performance as well as Idinas acting performance (note the lack of "fine") when they said Kerry's performance overpowered Idinas.

I really enjoyed Sutton Foster and Julia Murney's version a bit more. I prefer the darker voice to contrast a bit more.
That, and Idina's voice never quite did it for me. It always grated my nerves a little. That said, I can respect her as a performer, but given the choice, I'd take the Foster/Murney combo first.
