when this game came out i was around 2 or 3 so it was sorta impossible for me to play it when it first came out but when i was like 7 or 8 i started playing this game with my mom on the Mac version and it is one of the best games i ever played, i wish the CD-I didnt cut 2 puzzles like that, oh well i still have the original strategy guide that had interviews and artwork pictures in it as well
@xannidel Thanks a lot and I understand that this game would be impossible at that age haha. Completing it at 7/8 is stil impressive though! The cut content is a bummer and I doubt it was even necessary either, such a shame.
The strategy guide is pretty cool yeah, filled with great background info.
@HalfBlindGamer well i did have the strategy guide cuase a few of those made no sense to me like the can puzzle or the attic puzzle or the doll room one
but still i could probably do it all now without the guide but i still like to read it becuase its such a badass guide
@JReed1985 Haha, that's awesome, my mother used to play puzzle games with me too. Not this one though (she has no English skills), but many others. Plus she played a mean game of Dr. Mario!
I beat this game with a couple of friends on PC. Really fun to think back at such memories, thanks for sharing!
Awesome game, wrong system. It's not hard, especially if you're stuck on a puzzle too difficult to solve (Microscope and Cans, I'm looking at you). Gotta love the music from "The Fat Man" (TGWTG.com's Paw had an web interview with him).
It really is a shame that most games from back then aren't playable on current computers (thank goodness for the Windows '95 ver.) I also got the Strat. Guide which I don't really care for, but it has both the game/original scripts in there. ^_^
@EizentheAnimeniac to be fair about the microscope puzzle, you do NOT have to beat that puzzle to progress in the game, but i also share your pain on that puzzle haha
@xannidel Maybe not for the CD-i version you don't, but definitely for the PC version, you HAVE to solve it. I've solved all of the other puzzles (only for one puzzle that wasn't the cans or microscope did I use the hint book) and it still wouldn't let me access the puzzle that leads to the attic.
@EizentheAnimeniac i played the mac version (i know it wasnt the CD-I one cuase i had that damn can puzzle and heart puzzle) and also the hint book says that but maybe your right...different versions means different results
@xannidel Like I said before, I'm only familiar with both the original DOSBox version and the PC (Windows '95) version of the 7th Guest. I can't say for certain that what I said is for every version, just for the PC version.
its wierd i got a copy of this with a cdi from a game store only it had no soundtrack cd! nevermind though i finally found a soundtrack cd. it was better as the 7th guess case had a unboxed copy of zelda wand of gamelon in it.
I think they only released it with the soundtrack as a first wave. Later copies might have been game only. At least they also did something like that with Burn:Cycle.
I did not even know there was a Windows version. And I thought I knew almost everything about this game, but I never had enough access to a CD-i to finish that version ... I played it in Dos when I was real young later on dosbox and even later in ScummVM ... ScummVM is my preferred way to play ... maybe one day the dosbox emulate will run it faster but that emulator has a long of trouble with streaming video in games.
It plays the Dos Version I don't know if it can do any others I know it cannot do the CD-i version since the CD-i version does not use the Groovie Engine that was used with the DosVersion. I knowing nothing of the Windows version cannot speak for that one. I plan to now look into it much more now that you have brought all of this to my attention.
not as wondrous with this one its slow very slow even in comparison to that of the other 486 period games .. ScummVM is better at least at the time I made this comment.
I was reminiscing about a whole load of games I used to play when I was about 8 years old, just managed to find this one after completely forgetting its name. This one scared the crap out of me when I played it with my brother, I still remember the hands coming through the painting and then looking left to see this old creepy lady. Strange how memory sticks like that! Great review btw, thanks for that. Can't believe the graphics and "acting" scared me!
Well it was a new experience in a lot of ways for games, and yeah those hands coming out of the painting were pretty creepy back then since it 'looked' so real! Plus as kids we have a lot more imagination to fill in the blanks, most of the time making it a lot scarier then it really is haha.
That's a nice review, I to played that game all the time as a kid getting nightmares WAY before Silent Hill took that job over LOL! First played it on a friend's DOS machene, but then I got the Mac version and played perfectly on a Performa model, but anything after the Power PC era macs it just slowed to a crawl for some reason and crashed a lot! I did read the book to years later and thought it was okay, I didn't catch on to the whole Tad being in Limbo revelation originally.
Hah, originally I had no clue either. Just after playing it a couple of times, but at first I couldn't even beat the game when it was still new. It was way to hard, and I never figured out that stupid can's puzzle in the kitchen, that solution is just insane.
I have very limited experience with Mac's, most is still from the Apple II lol.
It's the last track on the bonus audio CD that comes with the game, I think it's called skeletons in my closet.
Also the first track (the game) on that same CD is quite good too, it uses the main theme of the game pretied up, and has lyrics too, and gives more of the intent/feel of the game across.
I can send them to you if you'd like, just let me know.
I can remember playing the 7th Guest back in the day on PC, to think some of the hype around it was that it was only being released on CD and not floppy... times sure have changed lol
You're right, amazing how times had changed in only a couple of years! But this game was great on CD, unlike many others of the first generation 'only possible on CD!' games...
Thanks, I tried to go by the original script as much as possible, but it's a pretty tough puzzle in itself! Wasn't to sure if it was really correct but I wanted to tell in with a different take then the usual introduction which makes it pretty confusing in itself.
It's good but many of the puzzles from The 7 Guest and The 1th Hour were reused. It has a pretty substantial story with interesting characters, even if they only make small appearances.
Hah, you must really hate me lol. With pain in myt heart, and some other parts of my body, I can assure you that you'll be well satisfied with that request in the next review! It will surely fall into the category shitty, or maybe something that's below that.
Thanks a lot man! Litil Divil's still on the list to come too!
Concerning the cut content... I didn't really know either! I had the game but it would always crash on me on the pie puzzle, still not sure why. So I only played through the DOS version back then. Now that I have another copy I could do a review of it on the CD-i and noticed the missing stuff. It's weird since even old CD-i magazines give solutions to the missing puzzles lol. Shows how great those were!
Aaaah! The 7th Guest, I remember playing this on the PC, and man I was so scared, but I wasn't very old back then, now the game isn't that scary, but yeah, back then, I was scared of most monster-type enemies in games. :)
Good video too! Fun stuff! And the video is suprisingly smooth too. My memories of FMV-games mostly consist of games that were low quality and had quite choppy video!
Games that require the Digital Video cartridge on the CD-i look really crisp and smooth. It's about the only redeeming factor of the thing as far as hardware specifications. FMV games shine on it, to bad most FMV games are crap. Most FMV games are best played on the CD-i though if you look at video quality.
Hey, thanks a lot for such a great review of 'The 7th Guest' and you mentioned me too, that's awesome. I knew I wouldn't be disappointed by the review which is why I requested it! :D
You've made me want to stick at it as I'm still gradually getting through it, I know what you mean about the scary scenes not being so unexpected as you have to click first.
Another fantastic video of a great CD-i game, looking forward to the next! :D 5 stars!
Thanks again for the request, it was a pleasure to make this video :)
There is one moment in the game that actually did scare me the first time I saw it way back then. It's on the attic when you first enter, turn around and there'll be a scene that doesn't require clicking and if you have the volume up quite high then it can have a nice effect lol.
Good luck in complete it! Some puzzles are pretty tough!
Oh I loved this on pc! My father used to play it with me when I was 5 all the time...... although the game scared the hell out of me and gave me nightmares. But it was so good I kept playing. Good times.
I had this game too for the CD-i originally, but it would always get stuck on the pie puzzle, so this was actually the first time I played through the game on the CD-i :)
Nice review and boy, does the video look smooth compared to the DOS version.
Anyway, just wanted to point out that the DOS and Windows versions of The 7th Guest are currently supported by ScummVM so you can run them on modern hardware and operating systems pretty easily. Just read the instructions closely. :)
Yes, I'm deffinately improving my English, which is great! It was one of the things I wanted to do with these video's and I'm happy that you noticed it, thanks a lot!

They shuld have made the rooms dark like in Silent Hill. That way they could have saved some space.
Atleast they say that Silent Hill could not be on the PS1 if it was not as dark as it is.
