The engine had a rod knock before he started revving it... if you hear that low pitch "vibrating" type sound, that's what you're hearing.. now, the engine was already junk, although personally I would have overhauled it because I love these cars.. I've got a 1983 240D and I am in love with it

I suspect there was something already wrong with it. Most mechanically injected diesels have a governer in the pump to prevent over rev... if it failed still then something was wrong already... still a waste though, engine sounded ok when he started it.. could have been rebuilt or sold. He might be suprozed what it might have been worth to the right person.

@mudantos2 Acctually they got, My brother got a W211 E220 CDI with 530.000km on it, and a friend of him got a 2001 E220 CDI with 1.3 million's on it, and my W124 E250 Diesel 20v got 533.000 on it... They are still great, but other carmakers also make good cars now... But I'll stick to Mercedes forever and ever!
