The whole point of this boss is it's how Lucas sees Claus. First is the gray robot which is Lucas thinking that Claus is just a robot. Claus screaming is him trying to get free. Claus naked is him freed from Porky. Him and Lucas together is Lucas seeing they are together again. (SPOILER ALERT) And the golden angel is Claus dead. This is just my theory!

Believe it or not, this isn't Klaus fused with Gigyas as some people say. It's actually a background representation of Klaus's thoughts in the final battle. Lucas is seeing how much in pain Klaus is.

It fits with the theme of the games, as we know Giygas went insane because of his pain and see the result of it, but not how exactly he did to become that. It is strangely never elaborated on in enough detail.

This way, we see closely the story of someone becoming, in Porky's words, an "almighty idiot".

I'm guessing that the original plot was that Gigas was using Porky as an avatar to traverse through time and space. The speech Porky had about Clause would be how Gigas has control over him, and how he wanted to use him as a new avatar. Thus this boss appears using Claus' image against Lucas. I also suppose that the original ending would be that Claus kills himself (via franklin badge) in order to destroy Gigas.

When he completed the game he came to me and threw the disc I put the game on at my head and said that if I ever give him another brick shittingly horrorifying game again he'll gut me. Now I've given him the Earthbound 2/Mother 3 rom, translation and the cheats to get to this battle. I'm expecting to be gutted in the next few days.

The title of Earthbound was simply given to Mother 2 because they didn't want to localise this sequel and have people wondering where the prequel was. The backgrounds were actually intended from the very beginning of development to be Masked Man backgrounds, and that they would represent strange visions that Lucas would have of Claus; in other words, the backgrounds would symbolically represent Lucas' emotional turmoil and Claus' pain when he is slowly shaking off Porky's control; nothing Giygas-related.
