I went there once and it was nothing short of breathtaking. It's more modern than any place you could imagine yet it manages to integrate it's rich culture into every aspect of life. I'm really hoping to save enough money for a return trip! Sadly Japan is soo expensive! If you have a friend or family member in Japan it's so much easier.

Imo, Japan has to be the most interesting country in the world, I so want to go there. The catastrophe at Fukushima Daiishi sure was a sad thing, and the radiation too is bad, and have only reached north of Tokyo, but it isn't as dangerous as people think, I even get more radiation by sitting in front of my computer screen. Well, it's true that most Japanese ppl don't speak English, although they want to. Almost all people feel really happy when the foreign tourists tries to speak broken Japanese. So don't worry! Try putting Japanese dictionary and just come and enjoy Japan-life! There are many westerners living here, too.

Crime rate? Low in pretty much all segments.

Polite? Yes, in general.

English? A lot of people speak some, like myself.

Sexuality? Personally don't mind, rather on the conservative side.

It depends on which part of Japan you are visiting (larger cities = more compatibility with English). It is usually possible to just get by speaking English only, and I've even seen temporary residents who don't speak a word in Japanese. However, as you may imagine, it makes things a little easier and makes people a lot friendlier if you could speak some Japanese, maybe just a word or two.
