Nascar would be much better if they used 'stock cars'... All the cars look the same. Use the new Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc... Change qualifying to the same as F1 (3 sessions) and use the 106% rule so there isn't 30 slow ass people on the track. And for the love of God, shorten the races. Less laps would cut down on the monotony. Of course none of that will happen, so nascar will continue to suck forever.

look ppl nascar isnt about just goingin an OVAL for 400/500 laps. its about adjusting your car incase of oversteer or understeer (loose and tight) if your loose your car might spin out, if your car is tight well u might not be able turn at all. oh and btw nascar has 2 road courses. Racing is one of the most demanding sport on the human body. Untrained and untalented peoples will not even keep 3 consistent laps driving the 700+ hp car, nor they can keep there neck straight in corners while, deceleration, acceleration and other extreme g forces. They will simply crash because they can't think so fast,don't have the technique and the energy is drained. Oval is and art. It takes special type of corner approach. Super consistent control while cm of the wall, while being chased.

Also, comparing it to driving on the highway is asinine. No one here has ever gone 200mph in a 3400 lb car. Not just anyone can do it. Consider that they are on racing tires, which have very little grip. So you have to muscle a 3400lb machine around corners 300 times in 4 hours. Extremely physically demanding. I recall Denny Hamlin passing out after a race. I also recall Ryan Newman winning a race w/out power steering once. Try driving 10 miles w/out power steering, then imagine it at 200 mph.
I understand if you don't like it because it's boring to watch. It's tough to get into at first (especially considering the disaster that is ESPN coverage). Most of you are right, NASCAR takes no PHYSICAL athleticism, but it does take extreme amounts of focus and mental dicipline. Why do people always say that nascar sucks because they only turn left and go around in circles or, as you put it, only have 2 straights and 2 corners? Nascar's premier series competes at 2 road courses during the season. People rarely ever say that IRL sucks, even though until a few years ago they only raced on ovals. I would understand if you said something like the fact that their cars use ancient technology (Carbureted OHV engines with 4 speed transmissions and a solid rear axle) though.

My biggest gripe is seeing "Non-Sports" on ESPN. Things like Nascar (or anything with vehicles), Chess, Spelling Bees, Eating Contests, Poker, Billiards - all of those things are competitions - but they're not Sports. Put them on another channel!
Take a basketball player. He needs to jump (power), run (speed), be quick (quickness), and use his body for 30 to 48 minutes per game (endurance).
Nascar drivers use quickness (reflexes) and endurance (races are long) - but they use no power or speed. They have to control their car, but that isn't power - that's strength....

nascar is a sport, the pit crew is changing 4 tires, putting in i think 17.75 gal. of fuel in the car, carrying tires that weigh something like 25 pounds all under 14 seconds. Drivers can also lose up to maybe 10+ pounds a race from turning a car that weighs a minimum of 3400 pounds for 500 miles. So if anyone thinks it's not a sport, then I just proved you wrong.
Moving around & losing weight does not make you an athlete or make you part of a sport.
Nascar drivers have skill, pit crews have skill - I won't take anything away from them.
However, a sport is a competition between 2 or more people - or 2 or more teams that use their athletic abilities to win the event. Athletic abilities: Power, Speed, Endurance, Quickness. Nascar drivers/pit crew do use some of those abilities - but not all of them.

I cannot however, throw a 50 yard TD pass against crushing defenses, shoot 30-footers consistently against the Celtics defense, or win a race against 42 other cars at 200 mph. To make it as a pro in all 3, you need to be extraordinarily skillful at what you do. There is a lot more that goes into it than just driving. I really suggest trying it just one time

To answer your question, you need to know how to control a 3400 lb car at 200 mph, know the strenghts/weaknesses of tracks/other drivers, and have the intelligence to help with building and improving the cars, etc.

It's a 4300 lb car, not 1300 lb car. That's a huge difference. It's a lot harder to turn a 4300 lb car than it is a 1300 lb car. Nascar would be much better if they used 'stock cars'... All the cars look the same. Use the new Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc... Change qualifying to the same as F1 (3 sessions) and use the 106% rule so there isn't 30 slow ass people on the track. And for the love of God, shorten the races. Less laps would cut down on the monotony. Of course none of that will happen, so nascar will continue to suck forever.

look ppl nascar isnt about just goingin an OVAL for 400/500 laps. its about adjusting your car incase of oversteer or understeer (loose and tight) if your loose your car might spin out, if your car is tight well u might not be able turn at all. oh and btw nascar has 2 road courses. Racing is one of the most demanding sport on the human body. Untrained and untalented peoples will not even keep 3 consistent laps driving the 700+ hp car, nor they can keep there neck straight in corners while, deceleration, acceleration and other extreme g forces. They will simply crash because they can't think so fast,don't have the technique and the energy is drained. Oval is and art. It takes special type of corner approach. Super consistent control while cm of the wall, while being chased.

Also, comparing it to driving on the highway is asinine. No one here has ever gone 200mph in a 3400 lb car. Not just anyone can do it. Consider that they are on racing tires, which have very little grip. So you have to muscle a 3400lb machine around corners 300 times in 4 hours. Extremely physically demanding. I recall Denny Hamlin passing out after a race. I also recall Ryan Newman winning a race w/out power steering once. Try driving 10 miles w/out power steering, then imagine it at 200 mph.

Why do people always say that nascar sucks because they only turn left and go around in circles or, as you put it, only have 2 straights and 2 corners? Nascar's premier series competes at 2 road courses during the season. People rarely ever say that IRL sucks, even though until a few years ago they only raced on ovals. I would understand if you said something like the fact that their cars use ancient technology (Carbureted OHV engines with 4 speed transmissions and a solid rear axle) though.

Take a basketball player. He needs to jump (power), run (speed), be quick (quickness), and use his body for 30 to 48 minutes per game (endurance).
Nascar drivers use quickness (reflexes) and endurance (races are long) - but they use no power or speed. They have to control their car, but that isn't power - that's strength....

nascar is a sport, the pit crew is changing 4 tires, putting in i think 17.75 gal. of fuel in the car, carrying tires that weigh something like 25 pounds all under 14 seconds. Drivers can also lose up to maybe 10+ pounds a race from turning a car that weighs a minimum of 3400 pounds for 500 miles. So if anyone thinks it's not a sport, then I just proved you wrong.

Moving around & losing weight does not make you an athlete or make you part of a sport.
Nascar drivers have skill, pit crews have skill - I won't take anything away from them.
However, a sport is a competition between 2 or more people - or 2 or more teams that use their athletic abilities to win the event. Athletic abilities: Power, Speed, Endurance, Quickness. Nascar drivers/pit crew do use some of those abilities - but not all of them.

I cannot however, throw a 50 yard TD pass against crushing defenses, shoot 30-footers consistently against the Celtics defense, or win a race against 42 other cars at 200 mph. To make it as a pro in all 3, you need to be extraordinarily skillful at what you do. There is a lot more that goes into it than just driving. I really suggest trying it just one time

True, theres no physical contact in NASCAR...but it's also the one sport where serious injury/death are possible on any given weekend and you know you're risking it all going out there...and its not driving, it's racing, and the competitive nature is what makes it exciting
To answer your question, you need to know how to control a 3400 lb car at 200 mph, know the strenghts/weaknesses of tracks/other drivers, and have the intelligence to help with building and improving the cars, etc.

It's a 4300 lb car, not 1300 lb car. That's a huge difference. It's a lot harder to turn a 4300 lb car than it is a 1300 lb car. No I don't think that nascar takes a lot of strength to participate in, but it does require some stamina. It's more physically demanding than golf for sure. 7ol*8, do you hate all forms of racing or just nascar? Because there is a big difference nascar and formula 1 or motocross. I am not the one who watches nascar. Its a waste of natural resources, the cars suck, and the "engineers" are nothing but a handful of hillbillys that think because they saw it on TV, they can make some car go faster by hitting the rear spolier with a hammer! WTF!! lol. My father pointed that out to me and I could not believe it!! If I were to pump money into any motor sport it would be rallying. Something that takes TRUE driving skill. Not going in a circle for four hours on end.

If NASCAR is so great then why the heck does it have 15 minute ads?If that happened on F1 or touring cars everyone would just stop watching. Watch Champcars, the F1 of America. If F1 is the cuisine of motorsports, NASCAR is a 2nd rate Big Mac. When Juan Pablo Montoya who raced in F1 for 6 years came to NASCAR, he immediately won the first non-oval event. NASCAR drivers cant go on a track which has left corners and some which go to the right. Only reason to watch NASCAR is for crashes.

15 minute ads?? wtf are you talking about?? and The only reason JPM won that ONE race is because he gambled on fuel...Plus nobody like JPM anyways, so take him back..not bc he is good, bc the only track he gets top 5 finishes on are at road courses. there is no point to watching f1... they dont even get side by side racing.. thats no fun, and the first time you bump someone your car is totaled..
