Obama is a civilian. Civilians do not salute. Even if the Commander in Chief were an actual military official, the higher ranking officer never initiates the salute. You knee-jerk Obama haters are idiots.

It is a military position, it is the highest on the chain of command that all service members need to know. The medal is held to a higher standard than any officer position and should be saluted as such.

I'm sure his advisers informed him of this before hand. Him not saluting was as statement and a kick in the teeth to the medal and any recipients of the medal.

You are incorrect to say that the higher ranking office never initiates the salute. Any military personnel is expected to initiate the salute to a medal of honor recipient (even if the recipient has retired from service) regardless of his or her rank. A General must initiate the salute to any medal of honor recipient (even if he were a private). However, the President is a civilian and does not salute to a soldier (as you said)
