Saw Procol Harum live at Jersey City State College & the Beacon in 70's -- both times I watched Brooker's hands & he played the counter melodies on the piano. Today, maybe because of age, Whitehorn takes some of that lead on guitar. A friend who was with me & a student at Julliard said he thought that was the most amazing piano playing he'd ever seen & Brooker seldom showboats. He's just that good. Trower, BJ & Brooker as always -- had people wide-eyed. Not in the R&R Hall of Fame. Believe it?
Those ass wipes don't know shit!To have Abba in the rock-n-roll hall of fame and not Robin Trower (or Procol Harem ) is beyond belief.Robin Trower put on one of the best concerts I ever saw.
Trower is THE most under-rated guitarist of all time. Should have been in at least the top 25 of Rolling Stones greatest 100 guitarists of all time. Maybe not highly influential but downright incredible. Robert Fripp of King Crimson made the freaking list. PLEASE!!! And I'm a Crimson fan.
@kuhne777 I'm a Crimson fan too and I think Fripp belongs on the Rolling Stone greatest 100 guitarists of all time list. Some other glaring omissions IMHO are Adrian Belew, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai. To make room for those three plus Robin Trower remove Jerry Garcia, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. No offense meant to any of their fans but Stills, Young, and Mitchell should be rewarded more for their singing and song writing than their guitar playing.
Robin Trower is one of the all-time under-rated guitarists of the last 40 odd years....however, guitarists [weekend warriors and the pros] KNOW he is the real deal , and he has made his mark on the music 'world' and continues to do so ! Procol Harum was never the same without him , despite the brilliance of B.J. Wilson, Gary Brooker et al.
saw them during a tour at this time and they were incredible. My favorite period because it's so heavy and still genius.Whole band was awesome but drummer / guitar combo was beautiful
What a terrific band. As an u'grad, I had this album and played it daily. When my GF and I split, she took all my albums, and I haven't heard this for 25 years. It still sounds terrific!!
this has always been one of my top songs of all time.Robin totally rips this song apart, not to mention the 3 pianos kicking ass. It's a shame you'll never hear music like this again.Todays music totally sucks donkey dicks!
I loved Procol Harum in the 1960's. I was a huge fan of their music then , and still today. . IMO they were way ahead of their time. There music has not only withstood the test of time, but decades later it is better than ever. Procol Harum, Gary Brooker, you are the greatest!! Thank you for all the pleasure you have given us!! We love you! Saw you twice in concert in 2010 and cant wait to see you and experience you music again soon!!!!!
I was driving home from work and I just turned off the radio in disgust because it's just the same songs over and over and over..... As I was taking off my coat I decided to look up some Procol Harum on YouTube. Great post ~~~ thanks, I needed that.
Procol Harem never received the recognition they deserved in the 60's, 70's. They sort of got lost in an age of 'Super-groups'--- but they were damn good!
I don't know about he was God.. But, like Ringo and the Beatles. He was perfect. and I truly believe no one else could have done a better job! And I miss him not being in our lives. Or perhaps it was and is God? My mate!!!!!!!
Some wonderful songs such as this one and "Thick as a Brick" the long version, "Eruption: Stones of Years," by ELP, "Gates of Babylon," by Rainbow, Ronnie Montrose "Black Box" and countless other great songs are never ever played on any station or featured anywhere. I need to start my own radio station!!!!
@headcase01 I think it's more like 12 pianos, at least that's what I counted, but there are three different locations in the mix, left right and center...I could be wrong, I should go back and listen again...
I picked up one of those "100 best albums of the 70's" books and they totally left out Santana, who started the whole Afro-Cuban-Latin rock genre (He created an entire genre!!!). Then they left out Blue Oyster Cult, who is still touring to this very day. BOC was a huge hard rock act in the mid 70's and were known for their laser light shows and have one of the best songs of the 70's "Don't Fear the Reaper." So I hear ya, I don't know who writes these top 100 lists, it's insane dude.
BOC was good, they were entertaining, I liked 'em, but I wouldn't put them on a Top-100 list either.
Maybe, MAYBE, I'd rank them somewhere in the 90's. They're basically two or three very good (not great) songs.
Santana's been a hack for over 35 years, but you'e right-he was, intially, an innovator of the "Afro-Cuban" genre. Once his original band members-notably Greg Rolle-went their own way, Carlos became a musical caricature.
@niffelhem000 rolling stones was is and always will be a tribute to doing what the big bands want. Did you ever hear them say anything negative about Led Zepplin. Where upon in music circles it is well know that 90 percent of Led Zepplin's music is stolen from other groups. Stairway to heaven is a fantastic song, but it is a compilation of three other songs by other groups (Music wise) A lot of Paige's early music were uncopyrighted songs he took from the Yardbirds
@Cimiar Not Beatles, no Rolling Stones,no Led Zeppelin, no Pink Floyd can be compared with this group. They are outstanding, years to come they will be right charted.
@niffelhem000 , Agree with you 100%. Rolling Stone has become a very commercial magazine. If you check their list again, you will notice that David Gilmour is NOT in the list..I wonder if they listened to a song called Comfortably Numb..??
@arturoewallis Gilmour made the 2003 list but the had him at #80 & Edward Van Halen was at #70. Why Trower, Kenny Wayne Shepherd or MIchael Schenker never made that list is a mystery. But screw Jann Wenner. He runs that sham called the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But he wasn't alone when that list was compiled. His 2 favorite flunkies Joe Levy (who now runs Blender Magazine) & Rob Sheffield (who also secretly works for VH1) had a major hand in that debacle. Screw Rolling Stone the magazine!!
@bucky468 .............Ok., Anyway he should be much higher in that list..Yep, i'm getting tired of RS..As for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, some of the inductees, i don't even know..!!
@bucky468 Rolling Stone magazine today is only good if you want to know what today's crappy musicians are wearing. Last time I looked through one, I got nauseated. It's practically nothing more than a bunch of advertisements for today's "hot" fashions. A joke as far as rock journalism goes.
@bburkie55 lol. I guess that's pretty much true. Funny you mentioned Zappa, I've been assembling playlists of all my favorite bands cds, and was thinking about Frank this morning. Must be a sign.
No kidding. At least we had great music to listen to. My favorite music is from 1956 through 1980. The radio stations had actual DJ's who played great music and knew what was going on in the world. The concerts were great, not overproduced, high priced Diva shit. I am so glad that my young adult daughter has great taste in music and a real appreciation for the music that I grew up with.
One main characteristic of P.C. is the "large" dynamics put into the arrangements. You can tell they gave their songs thought about where to start, middle, end, dynamics, message all incorporated into every song. They sold plenty of records I just don't think they've rec'd the recognition for their contribution. I searched @ the R & R Hall of Fame site & they're not there. I've believed for a long time that the ppl picking the inductees are smoking the good stuff.
@RangerAlways I think that with the exception of Pink Floyd progressive/art rock in general has been pretty much snubbed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We have Genesis being inducted this year but I suspect had it not been for their more mainstream 1980's success that would not be the case.
Tranzeuro- You're probably right regarding Genesis. I'm amazed @ how many ppl aren't familiar w/ early genesis such as the classic,"Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." I'm not sure there should be too many prog/art rock bands deserve HOF status but of course there are many bands that Have been inducted that still puzzle me.
@RangerAlways No they're not. They're drinking their own bath water! They're a bunch of know-nothing, pompous blowhards who wouldn't know talent if you shoved it up their collective asses with a bazooka!
Thal's Robin Trower on lead guitar. Broken Barricades was his last album with Procol Harum. i love this song; off top of my head, this and Whiskey Train among few Procol songs where lead guitar was so prominent.
in the bygone years when I was a teen, I was left waiting in the car while me mom was shopping. I fingered the radio dial and just happened into the beginning of SIMPLE SISTER, it blew me away and I have never ever had such a fantastic trip ever! I became an immediate acolyte of these masters!
Our local New York City classic rock station had these guys on when they came through about 3 or 4 years ago and had them play "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and I think "Conquistador" and that was it. IMAGINE having the leaders of this band still alive.. still performing away and failing to correct the criminal underplaying of its great material over the years. One of classic rock's "disappeared" bands.. play only the big hit and overlook an entire catalog.
BJ's drumming was truly one of a kind. Check out 'Bringing Home the Bacon" or the subtler "Luskus Delph" for more of his ingenuity. He unfortunately passed away in a house fire a few years back while living in the US. So tragic.
Yes, brothers and sisters, missing the opportunity to see BJ Wilson with PH is truly tragic. There simply was never another drummer like him. He lives in the US these days, I have heard... I wonder what he's up to.
I've only heard a little of his work. Is it true he also drummed on Cocker's version of "With a Little Help". A really skilled, powerful though understated drummer. You just marvel how he can accomplish more than a lot of other drummers of the "british canon" with such a light touch. He'd be up there in any top 5 I could name with Ian Paice or John Bonham. Page wanted him for Zeppelin and Cocker wanted him to join his touring band. B.J. said no one was doing more than Procul!
listen to barrie in the context of the song...thats what he played......he is my favorite drummer..,,,yet i dont view him as a drummer
....he is a conductor and co creator of the performance of the song...it has absolutly nothing to do with a "beat:"...theres his genius....and this was exceptional ,,,intense music to be with...we all love procol.....
oh yeah he's an amazing. And that is him on With a Lil help for my friend ( they were about to drop the song because no drummer could figure what to play until they tried B.J.) He also the drummer on the Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack. My drum teacher saw him he said he had Unbeleivable chops. Actually funny story he was just a kid when he saw him and after he did he didn't play for weeks haha.
@oranger2525 - Song was written by Procol Harum's Gary Brooker and Keith Reid. If Mott the Hoople did perform a version -- they covered Procol's original.
I am a big fan of guitarists so I can kinda get fixated on them, like Trower in this song. But Procol Harum was more than just Trower, or Booker, or BJ, etc...it was an ensemble of truly great musicians, all of them.
@fiutare That statement & a cup of tea would have had you stomped to a pulp in Great Britain (1971?) According to my brother who loved Procol Harum since 1968, this LP was the death of them, but I liked the fact that Robin Trower was throwing his weight around and getting some licks in.He was known then as a super guitarist & went on in other formats to prove it.
I haven't heard these songs for over 15 years. Lost my record collection, and Simple Sister and Salty Dog don't get any airplay down here. Just Whiter Shade of Pale and MAYBE...Conquistador. Sad state of affairs.
I'm 66 years of age and I still have and play their records. I was honored to see them in person in Pacific Beach California. Please try and listen to Uriha Heep. Old Rockers Rule
A musical masterpiece and one of the few tunes where Trower could express his bluesy style the way he wanted to before he went solo. Listen to this with headphones and let his guitar work deliver waves of pleasure to the brain. Greatly underated was Trower.
Absolutely great...but I would like to hear tunes from the album that preceded this one, "Home", and can not find anything anywhere. Saw a cover of Whikey Train but that's about it.
Fabulous energy - great song. Love Robin Trowers guitar, Gary Brooker's voice and B.J. Wilson's incredible drumming. These guy could really smoke when they wanted to.
I agree! Not to mention the instrumental bridge, with its endlessly harmonizing keyboard semiquavers, capped off by another guitar solo and a string and brass crescendo at the end. This is an elevation of a simple 16 bar blues song into sheer genius.
Amazingly multitracked single line staccato piano stacked into massive chords, can you imagine 10 or even 20 pianos doing these harmonizations live!?!?! This is one of the most intense instrumental passages in pop music. The whole track is brilliant but 2:50 to about 4:15 never fails to raise the pulse a couple of notches.
Saw Procol Harum live at Jersey City State College & the Beacon in 70's -- both times I watched Brooker's hands & he played the counter melodies on the piano. Yes, brothers and sisters, missing the opportunity to see BJ Wilson with PH is truly tragic. There simply was never another drummer like him. He lives in the US these days, I have heard... I wonder what he's up to.
funkydrumr51 2 years ago
I've only heard a little of his work. Is it true he also drummed on Cocker's version of "With a Little Help". A really skilled, powerful though understated drummer. You just marvel how he can accomplish more than a lot of other drummers of the "british canon" with such a light touch. He'd be up there in any top 5 I could name with Ian Paice or John Bonham. Page wanted him for Zeppelin and Cocker wanted him to join his touring band. B.J. said no one was doing more than Procul!

listen to barrie in the context of the song...thats what he played......he is my favorite drummer..,,,yet i dont view him as a drummer
....he is a conductor and co creator of the performance of the song...it has absolutly nothing to do with a "beat:"...theres his genius....and this was exceptional ,,,intense music to be with...we all love procol.....
thefifthunknown 2 years ago 4
oh yeah he's an amazing.

Another good example of how B. J Wilson added melodic complexity to a rathter simple riff-based song.

i love this song - the procol harum version.
but has another noteable band/artist done this song. i thought moot the hoople did it, but...i'm not sure.
share your knowledge, please.
oranger2525 2 years ago
No Mott the Hoople did not cove this song- for sure
scootertrash69able 2 years ago 2
@oranger2525 - Song was written by Procol Harum's Gary Brooker and Keith Reid. If Mott the Hoople did perform a version -- they covered Procol's original.

Beside the very talented and underated Trower this is a Masterpiece of good old Mate B.J.Wilson. He was a god on drums!!!!

I am a big fan of guitarists so I can kinda get fixated on them, like Trower in this song. But Procol Harum was more than just Trower, or Booker, or BJ, etc...it was an ensemble of truly great musicians, all of them.

Absolutely right. I saw Wilson 2 times live. He was freaking unbelievable. Bj played lead drums and nobody knew it, because he was so good.

@fiutare Something very special in the way he plays the drums on this as if there are more than one drummer.
uberalles2 1 year ago 2
@fiutare That statement & a cup of tea would have had you stomped to a pulp in Great Britain (1971?) According to my brother who loved Procol Harum since 1968, this LP was the death of them, but I liked the fact that Robin Trower was throwing his weight around and getting some licks in.He was known then as a super guitarist & went on in other formats to prove it.
RasMajnouni 8 months ago
My favorite from this LP! Then love Trower's 1st 3 solo LP's!

Like Family and Traffic, this band played progressive rock before the term became identfied with bands like ELP, Yes, etc.

This is an elevation of a simple 16 bar blues song into sheer genius.
bartonone2005 3 years ago 2
Amazingly multitracked single line staccato piano stacked into massive chords, can you imagine 10 or even 20 pianos doing these harmonizations live!?!?! This is one of the most intense instrumental passages in pop music. The whole track is brilliant but 2:50 to about 4:15 never fails to raise the pulse a couple of notches.
