Freaking nice man :) How's that 20R running? 32's are the perfect size man. No lift needed. These were 33's, with no lift, and it rubbed a little depending on how you were flexing it.
@tommartyn thanks man.. its been great since i had a cam for more torque put in,webber double barel carb and a Hooker Header put in as well.. i put a 140amp alternator put in that i had made form Quick Start Alternators. i get a bit rubbing still with my 32s,i just might do some trimming instead off lifting. here in the Texas Panhandle our winds get up to 60mph and if your too tall it will drag your rig down quick lol... your video reminded me of the San Antonio area where iam from. nice trees..
ha i bought a 89 toyota 4x4 ext cab from my best friend for only 400 bucks.. all it needed was a head gasket and a timeing chain. and its perfect now and it will climb a tree
Man, that was a lucky buy :) But if it had a solid axle in the front like these older ones, then it could really climb a tree :) The stiffness of a solid axle is good for that kind of thing.
The dodge isn't for romping, its not a romping vehicle, and it won't be romped. Unless someday its road career is over. Then it'll probably get a good romping. But i need it to drive to work every day, and can't break it.
The toyota is stock suspension, There are different sized tires on it at different parts of the video. The biggest tires you see on it, are 33's, by 12inches, i think that was the width. And they worked the best :)

hahah, really? toyota engines don't blow up at all around here. water or no water :) i'll send you a video of my 83 and you can check that out :) I've had the engines litterally suck in water and lock up. Just changed the oil, pull the plugs out, crank the water out of the cylinders, and then put the plugs back in and fire it up. Toyotas are about the toughest trucks around man. even though any engine can take that kind of thing really. We've tested over 150 vehicles here.
This footage was my Sony DCR-TRV 130. i think its a 2001 or 2000 digital 8 camcorder. Took really good video for when it came out. It had a really awesome light too, which helped with the night vision but its also got the infrared light for the real night vision. Now i use a sony dcr trv 70, which is a little bit newer mini-dv tap camera. higher quality, smaller. still got night vision, but no regular light
yeah man, if you keep looking on ebay, you can find them pretty cheap, with a lot of attachments usually. They hook up to computers with firewire. Mini dv tapes aren't cheap, though the digital 8 tapes are a little cheaper. ebays the place to go for cheap tapes. Get the biggest battery you can too :) on my old camera, the battery would honestly last over 700 minutes :) huge battery. The new camera's biggest battery lasts about 400 minutes. Still awesome.
Top gear tried to kill one (they call them a "Hilux" over in the UK) and couldn't. So long as you patch this back together, it'd make a nice trail truck. Part the old tractors out on ebay, guys get good money on Bolens stuff.
Yeah, i saw that :) they could have tried alot harder :) In alot of ways we've really tested these machines, at least the mechanical parts insanely harder then they did. This thing is unfortunatly gone now a days... finally left last year. But i still have an 83 that i just need to finish bolting the engine in.
I don't know if guys do get good money for bolens stuff. i know people charge alot for the tractors, and the parts, but i'm not sure how many people pay.
Hell yeah man :) i saw the European top gear episode they did on these beasts. they took a diesel and did some pretty ridiculous stuff to it. drowned it in the ocean, put it on the top of a building that blew up. Crazy stuff.
Awesome man! yeah, this one had bad bad rot when i got it, so we just fully tested the machine :)
Hope you make the thing even more awesome! Please god though man, don't put a non 22R engine in it. i beg you. Keep it toyota powered. maybe the diesel toyota engine would be awesome, but please god don't put a 350 in it with an auto trans... i'll kill myself. haha.
But they're actually 3rd generation toyota pickups. this was the first body style that had 4x4's though. Except for the ones that were officailly converted to 4wd at dealers, and sold as 4wd. Those were second generation pickups.
Maybe I'm just strange, but it really pains me to see the 79-95 Toyota trucks( IMO, the best ever designed) totally mutilated like this. I guess it does prove their ruggedness though.....
i can understand why it could be hard to watch, because its being used pretty hard. but yeah, thats absolutely what its all about, it completly proves their ruggedness, and abilitys. Proves how amazing they are. They can break in half, from rust like this one, and keep driving. without having to do anything at all to them! :) they're like the terminator.
But mutilated, no. Mutilating one of these, is throwing a GM 350 in it, and even worse, backed up with an automatic :(
hey! :) thats completely wrong actually, toyota makes, and made awesome, incredibly well built economical cars and trucks that require barely any work, and last for 300+ thousand miles. Great on gas, reliable, and fun to use. Probably one of the best, if not the best automaker ever. Hands down.
theres one right up the street from me behind an old house i went beck there once the lince plate sticker say 01 BUT the frame is GONE 3 to 4 inches of it on each side are compleatly rusted away
aah i love the truck. those lil toyotas are real troopers. i cant believe mine has lasted so long... you should glue the bed back on and tear it up some more, be sure to record it, too..
haha! :) nice :) yeah, hope you can get some more some day. they are always around somewhere. i'm glad you stumbled across our vids! And glad you've enjoyed seeing them :)
:) if thats the Top Gear thing, with the mid 80's diesel red 4x4 i've seen that :) it is awesome :) Physical driving abuse wise, we've deffinatly beat toyota's alot harder then that. but trying to crush them, burn them, drown the, and fall on top of a collapsing building, they've got us beat. :) But crazy violent driving. thats all us :)
Yeah, it was kinda weird, because i watched it, then i remembered hearing something about something like that from a guy i was working with at my neighbors house for a few days. we were laborer's for a stucco guy, and i drove this over after the back end broke off, and it reminded him of that, and was telling me about it. crazy awesome stuff :) I WANT a diesel :)
yeah i know! :) I got really lucky, the guy just decided that it was time to sell it, and threw a battery in it, fired it up, and parked it by the road :) Then luckily drew saw it :) Definatly definatly gotta get it welded back together :)
:) we did have some fun. It brought back fond memories of days past for us too, because this footage is about 4 or 5 years old, and its been a while since this truck wasn't broken in half. very cool to see the stuff that made us so proud of it again :)
yeah that frames in pretty sad shape- maybe y should get some rectangular tubing and make a whole new back frame for it? Slide it in the front part of the frame, weld and bolt it in.
Thanks man! :) Probably one of 3 of my favorite vehicles ever. Most of the frame is totally ok, but right where the bed meets the frame (classic toyota break rust and break point) is where it is messed up. alot of welding is already done. hours and hours of work. but now it needs to be connected to the cab again. :) and i'm generator-less for the welder. i was using old vertical shaft simplicity frame for weld material :)
That would be awesome, i doubt it would be enough power to run the big stick welder i have though. Would be nice to have a generator tractor for drills and stuff though!
nice! but when you weld it back together, take the time to weld up the spider gears in the diff and possibly put some tires that actually have tread on it like maybe some old military style ones.
Yeah! that is a definate! :) welding the spider's. Probably front and rear, though it will suck bad with the manual steering... Maybe i'll put the power steering from the blue 2wd on it! :) haha! :) yeah, posi, new spark plug wires, and tires with tread... thing will be unstopable :) As always, no lift required :) Toyotas rule :)
haha! :) yep, and this thing needed a tune up for sure. :) half the time in the water running on 2 or 3 cylinders :) Could have really done some stuff with 4 :)
I paid $1000 for my '80, and it was still well worth it. It still kinda' works, but the thermostat failed closed and it overheated bad, so it probably has a warped head. That's the weakness of 'Yotes. Well, that and Birfield joints. But they're still great trucks; at least these old straight-axle ones are. I really want to put a Mercedes diesel in mine, especially since the discussion about running one with no coolant.
hey, what are birfield joints? is that the name for the type of Constant Velocity joints the front end has instead of U-Joints? Those things seem really strong, and Way better then U-Joints. no tire shaking violently when the wheels turned all the way :)
Yeah, Could be warped. Can get it shaved though. Thats what i'm gonna have to do with my 20R head i bet. Merc diesel :) Would be totally awesome though :) How many HP? The advantages in DEEP water ability are awesome too! :)
Yeah, Birfs work smoothly, but they are the weak point that always breaks on the rock crawler 'Yotes. And they are expensive to replace, unlike U-joints.
My 4 cylinder Mercedes diesels are 60 hp and 134 cubic inches; same hp and size as a flathead Willys "Go-Devil". Torquey too. A 20R definitely beats it in performance, but the Mercedes engine is tougher and more fuel efficient.
Don't get me wrong; I like 20Rs until something happens to cause them to overheat.
Man, i'm supprised they break. Thats what the willys use, and giant military trucks, and huge 6 wheel drive concrete trucks. The parts are bigger then u joint parts. very supprised. You know what though, i bet if they had came with ujoints, they would have been very weak ujoints that would break even more.
That is really awesome how closly related the 2 engines are :) both OHC too i bet :) Yeah! much tougher and more fuel efficent, plus... no ignition parts to cause problems :)
yeah, i messed up. it was moving, then i had to back up just one little bit too much, and the thing was just pinned. i don't even remember how we got it out. maybe a come along.
Yeah! i gotta get that beast back together. i miss the thing.
Yeah man! that night, i knew it was sopposed to rain alot, so i told drew he should take off work, and come romp the beast in the flooded little creek. and he came by on his lunch break, and romped for about an hour or so :) it was awesome :)
yeah! thats the beast before it broke in half. it was an awesome pretty much instopable romper. 1:38 is me after getting soaked by the tire. :) it was cold out too. it looked pretty perfect when i bought it. 10 minutes after i got it i drowned it i the creek :) water more then half way up the grill. sucked in the intake :)
We still have that beast, but haven't really done much with it yet. Its kinda been sitting. i want to put a head gasket in it.

yeah! thats the beast before it broke in half. it was an awesome pretty much instopable romper.
