Considering the sound, you could maybe give those cubes audio perception, and setup conditions that determine their behavior due to the the aural environment. Another thing that could be added is a way to program the cubes decision system, to augment them with computer vision, so as to cause them to react to the size of an individual. Some if not all animals have a limited perception of reality, and shy away from animals that seem to be larger, but not superior.
