what is a hammer on and how do u do it? for the intro bit?

you play one note then with out striking the string again you "hammer on" another note, so you basically get to sounds from the 1 not, so to understand, strike in open string then without striking again press down on the first freet of the chord striked, pull off is the opposite

is the hammer on optional? I can't do it for the life of me...

Just practice your hammer ons with an open string on the 1st and 2nd frets til you get good at them. They're not hard once you get your hand used to the motion.

Try practicing like I said but do them in triplets too, ie. open, 2nd fret, 1st fret, open, 2nd fret, 1st fret.

You play it exactly as if you were picking each note, but you only pick the first note. The other notes you don't pick you just push your finger down as if you were going to pick it and then release it.

Just play one note for each of the following.

10th fret 2nd string then

7th fret 1st string then

9th and 10th on the first string (an possibly the 12th fret)
