have not heard this since 1971.. wasnt available in Australia- but a fellow student who'd just migrated here brought a whole bunch of reggae singles with him... unreal to find this here
The song was originally recorded by Simone for her 1970 album Black Gold; released as single, it became a Top 10 R&B hit and a Civil Rights anthem. Cover versions were recorded by Donny Hathaway (on his 1970 album Everything Is Everything), Aretha Franklin (on her 1972 album Young, Gifted and Black) and Bob and Marcia (whose 1970 recording reached number 5 in the UK charts). The Jamaican rocksteady/reggae trio The Heptones recorded a version for Coxson Dodd's Studio One label in 1970.
This is not the original - - it doesn't hit the spot for me!!!- it's like listening to a 1970 Top Of The Pops LP..........and anyone over 50 knows what they were like!!!!
This track is just a version of the song, not the original, Bob Anderson a.k.a (Bob Andy & Marcia Griffiths are not featured. What is featured is a passable imitation. Don't be fooled folks.
I love this song! Im 50 next month and I remember this when it first came out. I was 8 (I live in a quiet part of Scotland) and I remember it just being amazing and sounding like pure freedom. There was something amazing about those times, the Beatles, Cilla Black, Che Guevara, Spike Milligan and the Magic Roundabout
love this song and Marcia Griffiths is so stunning. does any one know where i can find "just don't want to be lonely" by her on youtube? any links out there would be appreciated thanks :)
can,t blacks be just be people why they constantly talk about black black black its so boring,do whites shout the first man on the moon was white or the internet was invented by white or cars or trains or planes or computers etc etc was invented by white?no we don,t cos we just want to be people not white people just people, start being a person not a black person.
@september7891 so ignorant..at the time this song was produced, Black people were bottom of the food chain in America, South Africa and Europe. Everyone had the idea that we were meant for nothing and ignored. Police hated us, the justice system was geared against us. We were called all sorts of names and constantly reminded of our lowly status sans slavery. At the time white was the rule, white was right, white was superior. So yes songs like these lifted our self respect.

My dad used to like this aswell as me. He was in his mid 40s when this was in the uk charts back in the spring of 1970. It was unsual back then for a parent to like any kind of pop music. I can still see him now whistling along to this, nodding his head in appreciation and tapping his feet. It would always cheer him up as it's seems such a happy song. RIP dad. Thank you for posting this on youtube
A Fantastic inspirational song the background to the Song was the U.S. Civil rights movements struggle for acknowledgement of their Humanity and equal worth.
Whites are accused of being racist......the blacks are the racist ones. They always swager around with a huge oak tree on their shoulder, then accuse the whites of racism if they don't get their own way!!!
@losnah100 There's racism in every race. The reason is either fear, doing because everyone else does,or mainly because they are ignorant towards one another. A black person who has no white friends/in laws would say something similar to what you,a white person with most obviously no black or asian friends has just said. You wouldn't stick by that stereotype if you PERSONALLY knew more than one good black INDIVIDUAL. You can't generalise us,the same way you feel we shouldn't generalise you.
@Tiltonboy1875 true... but then when this song came out racist and political correctness were meaningless phrases. Golliwogs were on marmalade jars, everyone in toytown beat up the golli as he was one mean bad dude. Nigger, Sambo, Coon, Nig Nog, Chalky and Rastus were just some of the names associated to Blacks.
@Tiltonboy1875 This song is about celebrating life and not about oppressing others. Its about celebrating being in the midst of a legacy of institutionalized oppression. If you want to understand the power of music you have to understand the everlasting resilience and power of the human spirit in light of oppression. Peace
I am extremely embarrassed as a Jamaican to say that for years i have listened and loved this song and never knew until yesterday that it was two beautiful and talented Jamaicans who sang this song that i have loved since childhood.
well I was no longer e teenager when this song was realised. I like it very much but unfortunally I can't understand the lyrics. Could anyone write them to me? Many thanks.
I`m a 50 year old man living in Perth W.A, born and bred in Nottingham UK. This track reminds me of friends of West Indian/Jamaican families who i went to school with in the 70`s. It also reminds me of nights at the local Goose Fair where tracks like this echoed around the fair ground along with screams from people having a great time. Great memories.
@jack94987002 Im the same age, but from the West Midlands, and I agree with everything you just said, it was exactly the same for me and my mates too... Happy days...

@verrol2007 what about muggers drug dealers and rapists are they not gifted and black?my mum who is 55 was raped by 3 niggers my brother killed one and got 10 years in prison so i lost my mum and brother,i hate niggers.
@september7891 I would hate anyone who destroyed my family in that way. Therefore im sure your not saying if the scum of this horrendous crime were of your race you would feel differently. Put simply there is good and bad in all races and cultures.
@missmayiy my mum told me while she was being raped the sight of a very black face in the dark and very white teeth and eyes and flat nose looked so evil and as they called her a white bitch as they raped her gives me the right to call them niggers my brother and dad found where one of them lives cos the police would,nt say in the description of them what colour they were they were dressed in a blue jacket etc but not the colour which was relevent so my brother shot his dick off and got 10 yrs.
@september7891 Your mum had a very nasty experience and you have every right to be angry..but calling me a nigger for the actions of some one else is being an idiot. Its like me calling all whites racist rapist crackers because some of them raped my relatives...and I just don't believe that. So you have no right to call me a nigger!!
@bongo46 where does the word cracker come from?cos its certainly not british english.i wish a white woman would sing young gifted and white, sorry if i hurt your feelings ok happy christmas.
@september7891 its not just that, its all this white middle class antiracist shit and every little slip of the tongue by a white person and the media blowing this giant antiracist fashionable trumpet you in leicester a white nurse was walking home and she was attacked by 4 somali girls they kicked her head on the floor screaming white bitch, the judge said it was,nt racist and they got 4 month suspended sentence, now there is an edl march at the disgusting antiwhite sentence not racist OMG HAHAHA
@verrol2007 proud of what?being proud of a skin colour is like being proud of the colour of your toilet paper, should i be proud the first man on the moon was white or the man who invented the internet was white or my country has given the most to ethopia than anyone elses whats best?
@loungelooters There is hope for our young if there are still youth like you:) This music pioneered what young folk have, it is a shame the old school is not celebrated more. Fair play to you:)
Don't waste time arguing with idiots who say this is racist. Of course it isn't. They don't get it and never will. It's a great song and great message.
never mind the politics or other meanings the tune is a hell of tune, proper reminds me of liveing in middlesbrough when i was a kid,im not a black person but of european origin part english part italian,it dont matter what colour we are we all the bleed the same colour an thats what counts......:-)
Takes me back to when I was 17, one of my favourites and I'm white. Love soul music. Don't like the rap that you hear today though. Maybe I'm just too old to understand it. Give me Stevie, Marvin, Jimmy Cliff, Sam Cook, Oh Nat King Cole 'When You Fall In Love' that is heaven to listen to, and the lovely Michael J!Up with black music I say, brilliant stuff. In fact up with all good music, whoever sings it.
This song reduces me to tears - what it was to be a youth then, the innocence, the honesty and purity of the music, how can it be compared to the music churned today.
fuck black fuck white this is a quality tune, its a sign of the times when ppl quible about this sort of tune im of south european origin, born in the uk brought up in middlesbrough in the 70s a very multicultoral place then, and now, so this dont offend me as most of my mates were either of italian origin like me or indian, pakistani, jamaican or trinidadian etc....no one give a fuck back then, things were very raceist usually from those who knew no different and wera scared of difference,
It's really funny how some white people get defensive about this song, which is about education and motivation , really pathetic, what does Tim Wise call it white privilege thinking everything revolves around them, God forbid that black people should want to motivate themselves to do better with their lives.
It is so funny how someone claims not to be racist but can come out with such stereotypical racist language.
Don't flag him people should see the ugly face of racism and know that it never went away, and that there is a reasurgance of outward uttering's of hateful speech that needs to be exposed.
@happyenjoytime Another fuckin racist, its time people like you put your fried chicken and watermelon down and got a fuckin job.
You are the kind of negroe that will end up back in the plantation and shouting out "Don't beat me massa, im just a dum negroe" "i want's to please my massa"
The day is a commin when simple minded negroes end up back where they started--- Working there lazy little asses off pickin cotton and working from dawn to dust
@kevinturvy your not racist though, do you even know the meaning of the word, you are a typical example of the word.
How can someone be lazy and work from dusk till dawn, you wish those days would come back, what is your problem you have a black boss giving you orders.
You say this song is divisive, what you don't like is that it encourages educational, creative development, self improvement, because there will be more black bosses to be in charge of people like you.
@kevinturvy Oh, you old geezer. I guess when you were a young man in your 20s in the 1960s, you missed it all and it sailed over your head. Ha ha ha....you really mised it, didn't ya, ya old geezer.
@kevinturvy ...and another thing, you old man who's time in youth seems to have taught you nothing worthwhile, is that were you to sport a, 'White and Proud', shirt, that would be dishonest, incredibly moronic, and a lie. You see, 'white', for me, has always been a phony word. You would actually have to put it this way: 'German and proud', 'Italian and proud, 'Russian and proud', 'Irish and proud', etc. having pointed this out for a 1970 vid, a year away from end of the 60s....
@Khultan ...but what was there to be proud in being German? After they had attempted to wipe out humanity? Same for the Italians, who were stupid and gullible enough to follow a fascist control freak with a super inferiority complex, the Irish? They'be been, regarded by the English, as rejects for ages, etc. to think, after the horrors of World War II, a war against humanity with insane motivations, to try to get an understanding of inhumanity and how it shaped attitudes.
@kevinturvy You clearly are a moron to a lesser extent ignorant, this song has to do with empowerment a time where black people were physically , mentally attacked by people with the same mindset as you, it is telling us that we can do better be better, it is not anti white, it is people like you who create the divide, we just want a better life in this Country, the only way we are going to get it is to excel in anything we do,
The fact you read racism into it says more about you.
@TheblackpoundCo This reverse racism thing is bullshit, it is coming from people trying to deflect from their racist views and the shame of racism that endured at the time of this songs release, sadly it has still not gone away it is more ingrained and insidious to the point where people don't know they are actually being racist.
@kevinturvy No it is not racist you are the loony and obviously blatantly racist and your racist perceptions are perceiving it as an attack. pathetic.
@kevinturvy You are the racist you know you are if the song comes from that fact which was and is still prevalent that that black people are not intelligent enough to be anything do anything be anyone, that we should not aim high, hence Young gifted and black we should begin to tell our young, that when your young gifted and black your souls intact.
It is people like you who are dividing people not a song that is meant to to give black people faith that we can do anything, you complete loser.
@TheblackpoundCo Blacks today have adopted what white people call "Sambo Culture" nigga this and nigga that, eating fried chicken, watermelon and living off of handouts.. Music is now aimed at the moronic black wannbe pimps and drug dealers, they have no-one to look up to, they think the world owes them a living and they complain about everything..
@kevinturvy Bullshit you are such a racist, touting typical stereotypical racist view of black people, you know nothing about black people except what you see through your hate filled glasses.
@kevinturvy White people never have expectation they only have stereotypical views, yet another stereotypical view the USA do not have the monopoly of serial killers and obese people, the UK has it's fair share.
You that BNP guy who got evicted out of his housing trust flat in Ladbroke grove.
@TheblackpoundCo Yea white people have stereotypical views..... that shows you are a racist.. you see white people as a race who make assumptions based on skin colour, yet you have proved to be no different... You are a Racist because you spend your time fighting against white rule and power, well let me tell you those in charge are there not because of colour but because of there skills and education..
B.N.P Are not a racist party, The uk labour party have kept blacks back for years..
@kevinturvy What it proves is that you do not have the intellect to realise you have proven you are a racist, in fact you sound quite the socio path, I base my views on fact you have expressed clearly what you are, I also speak from experience,
I am a racist because I fight against white rule and power you are a psychopath, The BNP formerly the National front are the biggest race haters in the land, you talk about education you don't even know the meaning of the word.
@kevinturvy You talk about education you don't even know the meaning of the word racist, you have exhibited the perfect example of a racist on this page.
You have also reinforced the fact that the BNP is a racist party who should never have a voice in this country.
@kevinturvy This is the definition of racism " the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race , especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior:" you have exhibited this very trait on this page.
@TheblackpoundCo Hey, it's irony, not racism. But Rastafari was indeed a racist movement in the beginning. Now it's an universal pacifist one love religion. But back to Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths. They were not rastafarians, they was a part of the hippie collective in Kingston Three years later Marcia choired on a record called "Catch A Fire" with a band unknown outside Jamaica: The Wailers. Marcia was the most famous artist in that band, Robert Marley was quite unknown.
Is everyone on YouTube ripping off everyone else here? Doesn't anybody have the original by Bob & Marcia instead of this re-recording?

@missmayiy my mum told me while she was being raped the sight of a very black face in the dark and very white teeth and eyes and flat nose looked so evil and as they called her a white bitch as they raped her gives me the right to call them niggers my brother and dad found where one of them lives cos the police would,nt say in the description of them what colour they were they were dressed in a blue jacket etc but not the colour which was relevent so my brother shot his dick off and got 10 yrs.
september7891 3 months ago
@september7891 Your mum had a very nasty experience and you have every right to be angry..but calling me a nigger for the actions of some one else is being an idiot. Its like me calling all whites racist rapist crackers because some of them raped my relatives...and I just don't believe that. So you have no right to call me a nigger!!
bongo46 2 months ago
@bongo46 where does the word cracker come from?cos its certainly not british english.i wish a white woman would sing young gifted and white, sorry if i hurt your feelings ok happy christmas.
september7891 2 months ago
@september7891 its not just that, its all this white middle class antiracist shit and every little slip of the tongue by a white person and the media blowing this giant antiracist fashionable trumpet you in leicester a white nurse was walking home and she was attacked by 4 somali girls they kicked her head on the floor screaming white bitch, the judge said it was,nt racist and they got 4 month suspended sentence, now there is an edl march at the disgusting antiwhite sentence not racist OMG HAHAHA

Don't flag him people should see the ugly face of racism and know that it never went away, and that there is a reasurgance of outward uttering's of hateful speech that needs to be exposed.

happyenjoytime 9 months ago
@happyenjoytime Another fuckin racist, its time people like you put your fried chicken and watermelon down and got a fuckin job.
You are the kind of negroe that will end up back in the plantation and shouting out "Don't beat me massa, im just a dum negroe" "i want's to please my massa"
The day is a commin when simple minded negroes end up back where they started--- Working there lazy little asses off pickin cotton and working from dawn to dust
kevinturvy 9 months ago
@kevinturvy your not racist though, do you even know the meaning of the word, you are a typical example of the word.
How can someone be lazy and work from dusk till dawn, you wish those days would come back, what is your problem you have a black boss giving you orders.
You say this song is divisive, what you don't like is that it encourages educational, creative development, self improvement, because there will be more black bosses to be in charge of people like you.

How come this ever got released? what about young gifted and white? that would be called racist.
Yet this racist song has been around for years...
Good tune but very anti-white, there are those that say it was just about them being proud of being black, they make the divide.
If i wore a t-shirt saying White and proud then i would be called a racist.
Double fuckin standards
kevinturvy 9 months ago 2
@kevinturvy this song was sang when black people were second class citizens
westq2 9 months ago
@kevinturvy Oh, you old geezer. I guess when you were a young man in your 20s in the 1960s, you missed it all and it sailed over your head. Ha ha ha....you really mised it, didn't ya, ya old geezer.
Khultan 9 months ago
@kevinturvy ...and another thing, you old man who's time in youth seems to have taught you nothing worthwhile, is that were you to sport a, 'White and Proud', shirt, that would be dishonest, incredibly moronic, and a lie. You see, 'white', for me, has always been a phony word. You would actually have to put it this way: 'German and proud', 'Italian and proud, 'Russian and proud', 'Irish and proud', etc. having pointed this out for a 1970 vid, a year away from end of the 60s....
Khultan 9 months ago
@Khultan ...but what was there to be proud in being German? After they had attempted to wipe out humanity? Same for the Italians, who were stupid and gullible enough to follow a fascist control freak with a super inferiority complex, the Irish? They'be been, regarded by the English, as rejects for ages, etc. to think, after the horrors of World War II, a war against humanity with insane motivations, to try to get an understanding of inhumanity and how it shaped attitudes.
Khultan 9 months ago
@Khultan ....should be more prevalent, in this time and onwards for the children of today and their children of tomorrow....
Khultan 9 months ago
@kevinturvy You clearly are a moron to a lesser extent ignorant, this song has to do with empowerment a time where black people were physically , mentally attacked by people with the same mindset as you, it is telling us that we can do better be better, it is not anti white, it is people like you who create the divide, we just want a better life in this Country, the only way we are going to get it is to excel in anything we do,
The fact you read racism into it says more about you.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo This reverse racism thing is bullshit, it is coming from people trying to deflect from their racist views and the shame of racism that endured at the time of this songs release, sadly it has still not gone away it is more ingrained and insidious to the point where people don't know they are actually being racist.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo No it says more about you, either you are black or a fuckin loony if you cannot see the racism in this..
The race riots were well over by the time this was issued as a single, its a dig at the white race
kevinturvy 9 months ago
Comment removed
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@kevinturvy No it is not racist you are the loony and obviously blatantly racist and your racist perceptions are perceiving it as an attack. pathetic.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo As i have stated... you are black and racist, that is why you do not see it as racist.
I am not racist in anyway shape or form, i have friends that are from all walks of life, it makes no difference to me what colour anyone is..
If i was racist i would not have said it was a good song..
kevinturvy 9 months ago
@kevinturvy You are the racist you know you are if the song comes from that fact which was and is still prevalent that that black people are not intelligent enough to be anything do anything be anyone, that we should not aim high, hence Young gifted and black we should begin to tell our young, that when your young gifted and black your souls intact.
It is people like you who are dividing people not a song that is meant to to give black people faith that we can do anything, you complete loser.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo Blacks today have adopted what white people call "Sambo Culture" nigga this and nigga that, eating fried chicken, watermelon and living off of handouts.. Music is now aimed at the moronic black wannbe pimps and drug dealers, they have no-one to look up to, they think the world owes them a living and they complain about everything..
kevinturvy 9 months ago
@kevinturvy Bullshit you are such a racist, touting typical stereotypical racist view of black people, you know nothing about black people except what you see through your hate filled glasses.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo They live up to the expectations of white folk, they do not want to change, they are happy in there ignorant bliss.
You act like a coon you get treated like one, look at the Chinese they are now the wealthiest and most productive nation on earth.
Yet 100 years ago most were peasant farmers, they got down and did what was needed, they did not want to prove it to anyone other than themselves.
Look at America, a wasteland of serial killers and mentally disturbed obese people
kevinturvy 9 months ago
@kevinturvy White people never have expectation they only have stereotypical views, yet another stereotypical view the USA do not have the monopoly of serial killers and obese people, the UK has it's fair share.
You that BNP guy who got evicted out of his housing trust flat in Ladbroke grove.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo Yea white people have stereotypical views..... that shows you are a racist.. you see white people as a race who make assumptions based on skin colour, yet you have proved to be no different... You are a Racist because you spend your time fighting against white rule and power, well let me tell you those in charge are there not because of colour but because of there skills and education..
B.N.P Are not a racist party, The uk labour party have kept blacks back for years..
kevinturvy 9 months ago
@kevinturvy What it proves is that you do not have the intellect to realise you have proven you are a racist, in fact you sound quite the socio path, I base my views on fact you have expressed clearly what you are, I also speak from experience,
I am a racist because I fight against white rule and power you are a psychopath, The BNP formerly the National front are the biggest race haters in the land, you talk about education you don't even know the meaning of the word.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@kevinturvy You talk about education you don't even know the meaning of the word racist, you have exhibited the perfect example of a racist on this page.
You have also reinforced the fact that the BNP is a racist party who should never have a voice in this country.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@kevinturvy black people aren't called 'blacks'.
AliciaParkerTW 7 months ago
@kevinturvy Also just to get something straight black people do not care about white expectations, we care because we have too,,
Ever heard of you get the society you pay for, or you show me respect and I'll show you respect, it works both ways.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo Agree with you on that, but as you say it works both ways:)
kevinturvy 9 months ago
@kevinturvy This is the definition of racism " the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race , especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior:" you have exhibited this very trait on this page.
TheblackpoundCo 9 months ago
@TheblackpoundCo Hey, it's irony, not racism. But Rastafari was indeed a racist movement in the beginning. Now it's an universal pacifist one love religion. But back to Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths. They were not rastafarians, they was a part of the hippie collective in Kingston Three years later Marcia choired on a record called "Catch A Fire" with a band unknown outside Jamaica: The Wailers. Marcia was the most famous artist in that band, Robert Marley was quite unknown.
