This is one of the greatest underrated rock songs of all time. The lyrics, the piano the whole band just rocks out on this one. It is pure rock bliss to me. Thank you for the treat. Peace.
@carmichael2411 Uh...how about "you look like a star, but your still on parole"? Or "you look like a star, but your really out on parole"? both of which are said.
One of the great bands of its time or any time. first rock group to headline a broadway theatre in nyc., Queen was opening act. love these guys wish they stayed together.
One of the great bands of its time or any time. first rock group to headline a broadway theatre in nyc., Queen was opening act. love these guys wish they stayed together.
@OhEmGeeDoubleYouTeEf The name of the band comes from the book, "Mott The Hoople" in which the character is a lazy, preferring to work as little as possible, earning money on the side by running every scam going. He's also a gambler and not a very good one at that. Hoople is most likely urban slang referring to an unsophisticated person from a rural background or community.
in this age of flavor of the month its amazing to me but I dont think there is an Ian Hunter tune that I dont like! Is consistantly good songwriting a dead art?
Just saw 'The Ballad Of Mott The Hoople' documentary premiere in London with some of the band in the audience, on Saturday 16/10/10. Great night, with Ian and Mick Ralphs taking questions from the audience. Thanks guys.
@himycatisdead bowie had a really big influence on MTH and they were really good friends and in all the young dude david bowie is the higher voice that says all the young dudes in the chorus
@billyboo59 saw them on that tour also! Queen opened with "Father to Son" and blew us away...Ariel Bender (one of the great names of R&R...hah) on guitar...Mick had already left for Bad Company
Wonderful intro and great record. "Man that's your instument ? I felt so ashamed". Class!!! Ian Hunter and the boys at their very best. 1973 strikes again!!! Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.
I love the descending piano part and the punk "don't give a shit" singing. Reminds me of Lou Reed, reminds me of "Teenage Wasteland", reminds me of David Bowie, reminds me of getting high, reminds me of playing guitar with Ziggy Stardust, reminds me of smoking reefer.........reminds me of my previous lifetime, reminds me of spending nights in Elvis's mansion, reminds me of smoking reefer with Zimmerman and Lennon, reminds me of waking up and realizing I have Alzheimer's. Go Figure.
Love the saxaphone part with guitars! I can see why VIDA danced the jitterbug in the kitchen at work-Sage nursing home. Its how we got thru teenage years working their. Its good to recall and count your past blessings!
This song was featured in Scorsese's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", which has Harvey Keitel in it. Then, it was on "Life on Mars", with Keitel. Next week, "Life on Mars" has George Baker Selection's "Little Green Bag" which was in "Reservoir Dogs", with Keitel. Some of the show's selections seem to be homage almost to Keitel. Truly bad-ass. I hope that show lasts.
The best thing is how Scorsese segued from Alice's idealized youth to her harder adult surroundings in Socorro using this song. Another great use of (now) classic rock by Marty.
It goes well with the tracking shot of Socorro. I have to confess, Marty introduced me to The Rolling Stones with Goodfellas and helped me appreciate Eric Clapton with "Layla" with the same film.
I love this song. So funny, and so TRUE! "You look like a star/ but you're still on the dole...."
