We have recently experienced a REAL off road challenge in PERU with a mixture of Rocky Beaches , Swamps , Jungles and Snow covered Mountains and while the Land Rover didn't do so well at all , Jeep did a little better , X-trail Won.

Nissan has the PATROL which is the only 4X4 car in the world that is capable of inclining a dessert at an angle exceeding 45 degrees. Its all about practicality. I have the nissan xtrail 2.5 gasoline and Im very proud of it. For luxury you can go for german cars simple as that.

I have owned both of these cars as well as a Disco 3 and Defender. I still have the Disco and Defender and they are in a different class to any other car but of any small 4x4, the freelander wins.

The Nissan is a fair car but isn't in the league of the landy. The nissan doesn't have diffs and isn't for the offroad, its exhaust and undercarriage are very low and exposed and its entry and departure angles are awful especially with the giant rear. Lets face it, the Nissan is for going to the Snow and going to the farm but you would'nt want to do anything more in it. X trail is in the Tiguan and Foresters league, Landy is in the Jeep Cherokee's

As for the 4wd system, well every car maker calls theirs somthing diffrent. Ford advance trac, GM insta trac, jeep quadra drive. They are all simular systems just called diffrent things.
You're confusing the Jetta for the Mercury Mariner....that's the only thing that is 'equal' to the Ford Escape....because they're on the same platform.. :-)

I have a Freelander 2 as well as a Range Rover TDV8 and I must admit I drive the little Freelander more, cant explain why though, perhaps just that its a bit smaller and more convenient around town. My wife drives the range rover much more than me. I've taken the Freelander off road a couple of times and I can't fault it. What is the problem with the clutch?

these 2 vehicles are completely different, the biggest difference is the drive train. the nissan x-trail is a front wheel drive soft roader that allows you to engage the rear wheels and the platform is shared with nissan front wheel drive cars.

I once owned a Freelander 2, nothing but constant issues and troubles... The first 2 months of owning it were great, but after that it spent more time in the workshop than on the road...
I later traded the Freelander on the X-Trail and have had 12 months of motoring heaven compared the the nightmare that was my Land Rover, and lets face it, if you know how to drive off-road, you don't need the "4WD for idiots" knob! (and the X-Trail has never had an issue with hitting rocks either!!!)
Pretty lame test. Not only did they not go head to head, they didn`t even take the vehicles on the same road -- so this crap about the Nissan hitting rocks is meaningless. Bottom line, the Nissan is quicker, cheaper to run, and much more affordable. Only a loyal Brit would pick the Freelander on the basis of this comparison.

I think it's pretty simple between these two. If you're more turned to 4x4 then you get the Freelander as the rocks don't hit the car underneath and also it has terrain response which is priceless for the offroad. However, if you want an SUV just for show (the road) and taking your kids to school, then the x-trali is more economical. I think that, in the end they both chose each their preferred vehicle in a way that made much sense.
just got an X trail GT 2002 japanese spec 280bhp turbo with an IMPUL full body and suspension kit ..wolfin sheeps clothing and Bags of fun!!! Had an ordinary 2wd x trail in S.Africa in Kruger and it was hopless!!

Don't agree there, I also have a Freelander (09) never had any problems with it yet. But had a brand new Volvo V70 in 08, when i managed to distroy the stearing, the mechanics made a faulty repair so the same part broke down 3weeks later. happend 4times. its not all down to the car. i live in Norway, and the mechanics here sucks. they dont do a propper job. (not all) I love freelander, it is like a baby range rover.

we have the x-trail mk2 and apart from some small engine problems (dodgy intercooler) it is perfect for towing braked trailers, sits nicely at 70mph all day and chuck on some decent tyres and is good off road the 4x4 and optional difflock switch is really handy.

American cars are also built very badly, and most have terrible interiors and don't handle very well. I said most, so you can't bug me for that. An American magazine said that a Dodge Challenger handled well. While he was saying that the car made a huge clunking noise and got up on two wheels.
So the moral of the story is that there are no big differences between the Land Rover is much more expensive... but has a better brand image. "So I'll pick Land Rover." Now is that proper reviewing? Any laymen on the road can make decisions purely based on market image but a proper driving expert has to evaluate what you really get for your penny. I'm sorry but this one was a sorry excuse for a comparison!
They didn't even take them on the same road, so that means nothing. The Nissan is just better by every objective criterion. And LR has no brand-image advantage outside the UK. Horror stories about quality and reliability have taken care of that.

You are right, but the development of the Freelander was already well on its way BEFORE BMW came along. The first few years of the BMW owernership saw very little input into the development of the cars, preferring instead for ROVER GROUP to look after itself, as it were. It was after the Freelander was launched that BMW began to take firm management control of the company. While Land Rover thived, the rest of the company was on its knees. It was mostly its brand that saved Land Rover.

The Nissan is a fair car but isn't in the league of the landy. The nissan doesn't have diffs and isn't for the offroad, its exhaust and undercarriage are very low and exposed and its entry and departure angles are awful especially with the giant rear. Lets face it, the Nissan is for going to the Snow and going to the farm but you would'nt want to do anything more in it. X trail is in the Tiguan and Foresters league, Landy is in the Jeep Cherokee's

@pj5454302 It's not the same chassis as the escape. Doesn't share a single part. It is based off the EUCD platform that Volvo has used for a couple vehicles and has a haldex 4wd system. Go ahead and find me concrete evidence that this is wrong.

@coolerdude44 ok the volvo platform that you are talking about is exclusive to volvo,The volvo you are thinking of is the xc60 and that uses a mix of V70/ XC70/ S80. landrover dose not use it for any cars. As for the 4wd system, well every car maker calls theirs somthing diffrent. Ford advance trac, GM insta trac, jeep quadra drive. They are all simular systems just called diffrent things.

Well lots of different opinions here, I suppose the biggest decider is personal taste. I have a Freelander 2 as well as a Range Rover TDV8 and I must admit I drive the little Freelander more, cant explain why though, perhaps just that its a bit smaller and more convenient around town. My wife drives the range rover much more than me. I've taken the Freelander off road a couple of times and I can't fault it. What is the problem with the clutch?

X-Trail is built for the person who likes a SUV but never really bothers taking it off road. And these are the kind of people who buy SUV's now days. They're never gonna do any proper off roading in them. They just get it for the look and size.
Which is why the X-Trail is designed mainly to go on roads cuz thats where they'll be driven 90% of the time. If you're a serious off roader then get a Patrol or LandCruiser or Defender or Hilux.
Most modern SUV's are just all show and no go.

Abt. 'brand image' , reviewer says: "This is Nissan, they build bluebirds", that's SUCH a skewed British view. Nissan build Patrols (about on par with the unbeatable Toyota LandCruiser), Pathfinders and Navarras too!
In Australia for instance, where having a 4x4 actually still counts for something in some places, about every third car you see driving outside of the city (not counting utes and pick-ups) is an X-Trail. Freelanders are spotted in the city business districts only!

these 2 vehicles are completely different, the biggest difference is the drive train. the nissan x-trail is a front wheel drive soft roader that allows you to engage the rear wheels and the platform is shared with nissan front wheel drive cars.

I once owned a Freelander 2, nothing but constant issues and troubles... The first 2 months of owning it were great, but after that it spent more time in the workshop than on the road...
I later traded the Freelander on the X-Trail and have had 12 months of motoring heaven compared the the nightmare that was my Land Rover, and lets face it, if you know how to drive off-road, you don't need the "4WD for idiots" knob! (and the X-Trail has never had an issue with hitting rocks either!!!)

Bottom line, the Nissan is quicker, cheaper to run, and much more affordable. Only a loyal Brit would pick the Freelander on the basis of this comparison.

I think it's pretty simple between these two. If you're more turned to 4x4 then you get the Freelander as the rocks don't hit the car underneath and also it has terrain response which is priceless for the offroad. However, if you want an SUV just for show (the road) and taking your kids to school, then the x-trali is more economical. I think that, in the end they both chose each their preferred vehicle in a way that made much sense.

Don't agree there, I also have a Freelander (09) never had any problems with it yet. But had a brand new Volvo V70 in 08, when i managed to distroy the stearing, the mechanics made a faulty repair so the same part broke down 3weeks later. happend 4times. its not all down to the car. i live in Norway, and the mechanics here sucks. they dont do a propper job. (not all) I love freelander, it is like a baby range rover.

we have the x-trail mk2 and apart from some small engine problems (dodgy intercooler) it is perfect for towing braked trailers, sits nicely at 70mph all day and chuck on some decent tyres and is good off road the 4x4 and optional difflock switch is really handy.

If you have a person from any country test a car from their country, it is going to be biased. He is car tester, and his job is to state his opinion. American cars are also built very badly, and most have terrible interiors and don't handle very well. I said most, so you can't bug me for that. An American magazine said that a Dodge Challenger handled well. While he was saying that the car made a huge clunking noise and got up on two wheels.

So the moral of the story is that there are no big differences between the Land Rover is much more expensive... but has a better brand image. "So I'll pick Land Rover." Now is that proper reviewing? Any laymen on the road can make decisions purely based on market image but a proper driving expert has to evaluate what you really get for your penny. They didn't even take them on the same road, so that means nothing. The Nissan is just better by every objective criterion. And LR has no brand-image advantage outside the UK. Horror stories about quality and reliability have taken care of that.

You are right, but the development of the Freelander was already well on its way BEFORE BMW came along. The first few years of the BMW owernership saw very little input into the development of the cars, preferring instead for ROVER GROUP to look after itself, as it were. It was after the Freelander was launched that BMW began to take firm management control of the company. While Land Rover thived, the rest of the company was on its knees. It was mostly its brand that saved Land Rover.
