At a time in which the UK chart was dominated by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John and Showaddywaddy came this genius of a band with tracks like this.......Cornwell and Burnell @ 1.30...it was way beyond the 70's TOTP audience.
had the extended version on a 7inch white vinyl EP which came with the black & white album.....great b side too, live at the greyhound in Fulham I think circa 1978?!
wow... I didn't know that the stranglers did actually COVERED that song. It suits the style of the band. And It's even better than the original of the 60's (still good, but...) :P
What they did , they cut the Hammond solo of Dave's which demonstrated the use of drawbars very nicely, allowed the whole oh Hugh's guitar solo, which was very nice to 'see'. Then TOTP cut the last verse, chorus and ending off.
@PliskinLee omg yeah...i bought an album where they gave this away too but it was 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks' or something LOL but yeah it started off my love for Stranglers music
stranglers totally do song justice, vocals great, keyboards r out of this world as usual, bass full on and what a drummer. listen 2 them every day without fail, lifes just better 4 that
The B side was good anall...what was it "Tank" and "Old Codger" or am I making it up? anyway loved them both...and that old geezer George Melly was real sleazy on Old Codger..must have been hanging around with Hugh too long...still dont know what a "Shave 'em dry is" anyone care to enlighten?
@GANGARENE erm coming from Melly I'd dread to think. I don't think he took after Hugh when it comes to sleaze...his participation in the song was brilliant and Lew Lewis played harmonica on an another number too.
Aye the harmonica on that song was fantastic, so was the whole song mind you....somebody told me a "Shave 'em dry" was a blowjob but I'm not so sure...it sounds more like a sado-masochistic game that certain men might enjoy...but I could be wrong of course...
Lol! TOTP ws always so obviously faked. Looking back I suppose it's a bit of a novelty though. Nonetheless, an epic cover by the Stranglers! One of their best.
so ... whit???? workin class heros... still get up n play bass n generly make a cunt of myself in front of all the family... wouldnt have it any other way.... :)
this is THE finest cover of all time...no question....felt the same aboot it since first release...music regularly swerves to deceive...stranglers walk on by was/is jugular bound...i thank them
I remember they recieved a good ammount of criticism from some when they said they where recording this song. The critics couldn't believe the Stranglers would release a song penned by the likes of Bacharah/David but they did and it was brilliant
@unclemort1960 As far as I remember he said he really liked it or something to that affect. The extended version of this song by the stranglers is excellent
@unclemort1960 if I can say the least, Bacharach did not like at all Stranglers version! (if I recall, he really hated it!) anyway this is taste. I love it!!!
You can just picture the scene: 'Ere lads I've got a great idea, let's do a Dionne Warwick song in the style of The Doors!'. And they bloody did it! Classic. I love bass players who say 'stand at the back and stay out of the way? F*ck off!'
Thanks, Bert. Hugh Cornwell signed my copy of Rattus a few years back when I went to a signing for his Song By Song book (he signed that too). Perhaps I should have asked him if that's how it happened... Charlie
Steer clear of those ice-picks, fella, cos they WILL make your ears burn, ha-ha. I'm told I missed a blinding gig in Southampton last month. Should have gone; b*llocks!
