looks dangerous with all these cars and people just jumping out in traffic. No traffic lanes, no cross walks, glad we don't have to put up with THIS today. (well, alittle better these days, lol).
Please have look at the quality of my restored version in HD of this historic film at: .....watch?v=A3IvrhF9RMQ With the use of modern video enhancing techniques a much better result has been achieved.
We all know now this film is from 1906. This was not the normal Market Street traffic for that time in 1906; it was perhaps a promotional film. In this film most people were recruited to make San Francisco look livelier. Notice that the same motor cars make many U-turns to reappear in the film and every person is wearing a hat to look dressy with the exception of only one. Can you find that person? It is also eerie to see that most people in the film died just four days later in the earthquake.
@TheCaleyman. Yes, I agree, you;have to play youtube this video with the sound off and log on youtube La Femme D'argent for the original sound. (two youtubes at once). Fone.
Utterly fascinating, almost haunting, it is the world of my father and grandfather. Note no apparent traffic signs and the numerous near misses, yet nobody gets angry - everyone takes care to avoid getting hit. Cars and trams seem to turn when they feel like it, everyone else just slows down and avoids, no problem at all. Of course it's all a lot slower than we have now.
Well done sound effects. Are there other videos like this?
@mrbooziebrews The people looking at the camera, I wonder if they know I am looking right back at them, 104 years into the future. Looking at me, looking at them...are they really dead?
so far I think I would say this is the best version vie seen so far with the sound effects it almost makes it seems your actually there, most other versions I've seen of this film from 1906 is just dubbed with a modern track, but besides love this one :)
4 days before the quake and not a care in the world. Great job on the sound effects, but you need some "people" sounds too and it would be even better. The film quality also seems kind of grainy compared to other versions I have viewed.
This is great footage but the date 1905 seems a little suspicious. Judging from the Ford Model T's in the footage it can be no earlier than 1908, post earthquake.
@zingerbatter Those aren't model T's. The date was Friday April 13, 1906. This footage was sent to New York by train on the 17th, one day before the quake. That's how it kept from being destroyed.
I love the sound effects, but the music?......not so much. It's kind of weird to watch this, knowing everyhone is dead now; it's like physically going back in time and moving about amongst the people. It's an awesome experience. I take it that the pedestrian didn't have the right of way back then. Crazy drivers.
As a San Franciscan I want to thank you for posting this wonderful piece of history of our city. And to think that only a year later every building in the film was burned in the great fire. It is fascinating to watch the people crossing the street and the kids hitching a ride on the back of a car. The fire by the way was finally stopped right across the street from my house.
Thanks for posting! The big building with the clock tower and the end you see here still stands today as the San Francisco Ferry Terminal. Today, Market Street ends just short of it at the Hyatt Regency at Embarcadero Center. You can see it on Google Street View.
Thanks for enriching this already incredible footage. I think you've chosen Philip Glass as well? Bought it into the present, yet held it in the past.
Wow. Do you think the person filming this knew that thousands of people a hundred years later would be watching this? Maybe I need to just film me driving down a street lol
@thrillbilly2, I agree. Once more, filming this at the time might have seemed to people of the time to be somewhat odd -- why film an ordinary street? But add one hundred years, and the ordinary becomes a blast from the past.
This is great with sound effects! But please remove the music that repeats the same notes over and over and drives me crazy...without that it is perfect. Thanks!
@inyomusic turn off this sound and open up youtbe again and listen to La femme D ' Argent by Air.at the same time This was the original music they had on this video. It fits perfect!.
@SolarEXtract Haunting indeed. It would seem that everyone in this video doesn't exist. The 10? year kids running down the street, would be 116 tdoay.

Prefer version with backing music by AIR, LA FEMME D'ARGENT, it has a better quality true black and white picture, not sepia.

I'd venture to say none of them exist anymore and at least 3000 didn't a year later when the big earthquake hit.
