To the point however, both Stalin and Mao discussed a very real proposal for an all out atomic war slugfest and figured with joint losses they'd still dominate. @chickenwretch they couldn't, remember, nukes back then where not ICBMs, they had to be delivered by plane, and no plane would go even near Soviet territory without being detected and blasted into oblivion back then because the soviets were aware the US had nuclear weapons and would then launch an invasion, with vastly superior numbers and experienced troops they would go through, you can't drop a nuke on your own country, that's the good reason the USA did not try to nuke the soviet union

@theghostlist I stand correcting on my last comment. You are right, there were insufficient delivery systems at the time. To the point however, both Stalin and Mao discussed a very real proposal for an all out atomic war slugfest and figured with joint losses they'd still dominate. This was around 1950-51, shortly before Russian pilots manned MIGs over N.Korea. As far as American liklihood of nuking S.U., MacArthur was sacked primarily for suggesting we do that to PRC, moral strictures imposed.

The rapes and other atrocities committed by Russian soldiers were their own initiative and revenge for what Germans had done in Russia. There was no policy behind it. And the Red Army did not have punitive troops that went from village to village to burn people alive. After Germany's capitulation it was forbidden to harass civilians in any way,

The rapes committed by the Russian soldiers in Germany were revenge for what they did in Russia, there was no policy behind it. When Germany capitulated, harassing civilians became prohibited.

When you want to strengthen an nation you build its cities and industry as Stalin did in Russia (Moscow's population grew from 2 million to 3.4 million in 5 years). When you want to defeat a nation, you do the opposite. Hitler viewed Russia as a land where the Aryans lived in the cities and the handful of "subhuman" illiterate Slavs would live in the countryside.

It probably caused the other allies to drop the A bomb,as the British had a 750,000 army in Burma (1300km away) and the US had only the capabilities to land between 500-1000 marines at a time.
The USSR had an army of 1 million plus the airforce and navy to invade immediately.
