@merchyllyn The Western Isles people are the most genuine, hospitable and friendliest people one could every meet. One of the last cleared townships in Scotland was in Sollas -North Uist. What became known as the " battle of Sollas " became a truly ugly affair. As in much of the clearances it was Scots people doing the burning and evicting, in this case Edinburgh lawyers gave the order, after the penniless Macdonald of Clanranald passed ownership to an Edinburgh trust.

Of course we weren't the only people to have suffered at this point or indeed at any point in history but does that mean that this should be swept under the carpet? Or should the story be told?
Land was stolen and the people persecuted!
Would you to tell the Aborigines, Native Americans, Maori's or Zulus to "get over themselves" and just to simply forget their history.
Do you think we should just simmer down and behave like good little colonials. If so then bite me!

This subject should be taught in every school in the world along with Rwanda and the Haloucaust!

Very true. Not many people are aware of that in this country, I know little of the facts myself. Then again not too many Scots are aware of much of their history.
What references there are, they don't get bothered about and the rest over time has been stolen, hidden or destroyed!
I just feel as a Scot and the grandson of a Gael everyone should know this story, and more should be getting done to revive the Highlands/islands, which are still recovering to this day.

So very sad. Part of Scotland died with those clearances. To think, sheep were counted as more important that people. Just goes to show.

It's an early 17th century love song called "He mandu" and this version is from the CD "Scottish Tradition 2 - Music of the Western Isles" put forth by Edinburgh's School of Scottish Studies, sung by Mrs Kate MacLeod (and chorus).
