  • The Brits can say about how 'stable' and unified their state in comparision to many other states but any form of opposition (including celtic languages) were brutally crushed before much could be done about it. Look at England, the industrialization brought explotation to the provinces and with de-industralization only London has any money. But we can change that, vote scottish independence. Allba Gu brath

  • I find it ironic that England, as a member of NATO, could condemn ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia; including the sanctioning of savage aerial bombings against Serb targets. When 250 years previously the British had carried-out one of the most brutal ethnic cleansing campaigns ever in both Scotland and Ireland.

  • thumbs up if totally enormous extinct dinosaurs sent you here !

  • Thank you for posting. MY family thankfully escaped the trip across to the 'New World' (where many died en-route) from the O Hebrides and smuggled a boat to take their starving, thread-bare bodies to the mainland instead. Those times should never be forgotten. Sadly man's inhumanity to man isn't dead - why others can be viewed as 'subhuman' to satisfy greed is simply not civilised...Slainte!

  • sad to think that still after all the hurt from england 80% of scots are loyal to them tut tut!

  • The western Isles especially and the Highlands of true scots, the land of well enlightened people and the most generous I have come across during my travels. It is the English who are savages and lack any class or culrure look at England now, a divided nation where people are only driven by money young people wish their parents to die inorder to inherit their house! how low has England reached

  • the Highland Clearances were completely necessary to destory a quasi-feudal, backward way of life. harsh, but it was what scotland needed, get over it

  • @jed371 Get over it????? Fuck you!!!

  • @jed371 I find it interesting that you're basing your comment on 300 year old propaganda.

  • This is my favourite waulking song. My first language was gaidhlig, my parents are from Skye and Lewis, this sort of thing is part of my childhood. I grew up hearing and singing in gaidhlig. Its so weird seeing this stuff on youtube!! Thanks for posting :)

  • There is a brilliant version of this "waulking" song by Ishbel Mac Askill of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. The title is "Herman Dubh"- a man's name Herman and dubh means dark or black (haired). The first verse translates as "Herman dubh is sad, that he would'nt come to get me, a lad with a letter, a horse and saddle. Herman dubh hi o ro, ho ro hu o. Herman dubh I would go, across the sea, with my lover, there would be no delay. Herman dubh hi o ro, ho ro hu o." Can post more, if required.

  • This is the music on The Hartland Series with Bill Landry it's played on a Hammer Dulcimer. Great job on the video!

  • i DID know that the english banned the weaing of the kilt & tartan was an invention from Victorian times

  • it was nearly as bad for us english the upper class shits tret us like vermn as well

  • @lindsay3640 the establishment in england including the landed gentry did indeed treat the people in britain like vermin. Selling off people and english romanies into slavery during cromwells time

  • @seonidh Thanx for that info seonidh I wasn,t aware of just how bad they were all those years ago ,Shocked yes Surprised no

  • @lindsay3640 I think there was a tv programme a year ago about the white ethnic groups set into slavery including the english, welsh, scots and irish. People who during Elizabethan times, the cromwellian protectorate through to the penal colony in australia during the 19th century were made slaves and prisoners. The slaves were treated just the same as the later black african slaves and even then continued to work as slaves. English romanies (gypsies) were owned by freed black slaves.

  • @lindsay3640 check out this video about white slaves in britain

    /watch?v=d2YTY25TH1E

  • Quality music. Much better than the pish you get tourist tapes.

  • *on tourist tapes

  • always interesting... to here english apologists like Professor Tom devine...much loved scots' historian claiming it was economic necessity...ala pol pot

  • Aye, yer dead right irishoforiel !

  • The western Isles especially and the Highlands of true scots, the land of well enlightened people and the most generous I have come across during my travels. It is the English who are savages and lack any class or culrure look at England now, a divided nation where people are only driven by money young people wish their parents to die inorder to inherit their house! how low has England reached!

  • @merchyllyn The Western Isles people are the most genuine, hospitable and friendliest people one could every meet. One of the last cleared townships in Scotland was in Sollas -North Uist. What became known as the " battle of Sollas " became a truly ugly affair. As in much of the clearances it was Scots people doing the burning and evicting, in this case Edinburgh lawyers gave the order, after the penniless Macdonald of Clanranald passed ownership to an Edinburgh trust.

  • Well done . I'm sending this to a friend who had never heard of the clearances.

YouTube is a great learning resource.

  • Why donts scots and their clans demand their farmland back???

  • @farquarish why don't we unspam this comment to show the world what cretins we're up against

  • @farquarish

That "awful noise" is an expression of our culture

    Those "savages" are us

The "screechers" are our recent ancestors

If you think that they were "bred" then you reduce us all to animals

I would take being called an animal as a compliment from a racist Englishman. At least these people are in touch with their society, history and culture. As opposed to...a robot?

Your tiny comment tells us more about you than anything else - thanks! It's been an education!

  • @farquarish The real shame is not one of your hero Hitler's bombs managed to "snuff out" your ancestors so nobody would ever read the vomit you puked with your neo-nazi attitude!

You're wanting to be called "sir". How about "SHIT"? That title suits you much better. Okay then, shit farquarish it is! We'll just call you "shit" to keep it short.

You don't suffer fools? You must really hate yourself. Run along now little shit, this thread only concerns adults so there's nothing for you here.

  • @farquarish fuck off you english twat. highlanders dont forgive and we dont forget. everytime i meet an englishman, he meets my right cross.

  • @gaelscot It wasn't the English's fault. It was the ruling classes of both countries, quite a number of whom were actually Norman not English or Scotish. There were clearances against the English in England too remember.

  • Comment removed

  • @farquarish 'Bread'? Never mind...Mate, take your meds, ok?

  • This song sounds Mongolic... reminds me of some non-Indo-European fucking Uralic languages.. wtf

  • @PersoAryanism Dude scottish language is purely indo-european

  • To say that the Irish were not liked in early Australia is a load of shit. The Irish were the early Australians! But the sectarianism in the UK existed in Australia too until ww1.

  • Brings back such wonderful memories of when I was a young child in River Denys, Cape Breton Island.

    Thank you form Canada!

  • 'se Eilean Bharraigh an eilean nas boidhche sna h-Eileanan siar air fad. Tha Gaidhlig cho beo sa bha a-riamh agus na munntir Bharraigh cho laghach 's cho ciuine! Eilean mo ghaoil. Gus am brist an latha a sheanair! Alsdair Ghille Bhan gu brath!

  • Hi can you translate that please?

  • What does the printed item at 1:07 say? It is titled "SAILM DHAIBHIDH." (Psalm of David?) I can make out "bhliadhna 1659" (year 1659) which is too early for the clearances, but is that the year it comes from or is it refering to something that happened in 1659?

  • Exceptional photos and a great song. Thanks for posting this.

  • Land of the great! Western isles all the way! Barra especially!

  • Thank you for posting this. Wonderful photos, etc. Glenn

  • I hope one day you Scots can sing a version of A Nation Once Again too.

  • lol heard better recordings

    ach tha e math :P

  • I've never heard a record of he mandu before, can u please provide a link, mar se do thoile?

  • alot of scots mixed & lived happily among the indians, as they were quite a hardy & similar type of people.

  • Ok, shouldn't have been so quick to post.

  • The songs the women sang to whilst doing almost any household task are brilliant.

I particularly love the way the Gaels sang their hymns but can't find much on the web. Anyone know?

  • It's still going on today. There is barely a Scot in the highlands or Islands anymore. The White Settlers are tranforming it into a little piece of England.

  • What is this music? Where can I find it?

  • This is known as a Waulking Song were originally performed while shrinking a web of newly woven tweed while beating it on a table. If you listen to the beat thats the cloth being thumped onto the tabel top

  • To Apincle..obvisouly you have never had it rough ....people before profits...you sound like a typical american..full of shit..like youre president...

  • Look, it was all about profits. Which was more valuble? scotish people or scotish seep? It was a close run thing but the sheep came out on top. Get over it!

  • Please don't take this the wrong way. The Clearances in Scotland and the Potato Famine in Ireland were disgraceful examples of man's inhumanity to man.

Yet look at all the good that did come of it. The USA would never have prospererd so rapidly without them.

From Davy Crockett (from Scottish grandparents) to Davy Jones who formed the US navy. The Irish built their roads and railways, mined for coal and gold.

Should never have happened but the world benefitted from it all.

  • You could say that the USA did prosper but when the Gaels went to the states the Indian tribes were treated in the same way as the Scots and Irish Gaels. Sad as one evil act resulted in the supression of another ancient peoples.

  • I agree, seonidh. Same thing happened in Australia and New Zealand. It's a sad fact of life that one group wants to dominate what is perceived as the weaker. Especially if they have lands that can be turned into profit.

    Sadly, greed rules this world.

  • You get one population expel another, but the Scots and Irish were riding on the back of the British empire. Without which we would all still be speaking Gaelic and never would have gone to those lands.

  • Yes, mores the pity.

  • highly unlikely since the Irish weren't much liked in early Australia they were catholic and regarded as rebels and drunks, they were also mostly convicts deported from Ireland for political offences

  • I was not referring to the first Irish/Scots that arrived to the Colony on the convict ships but the Irish that once served their term the second generation settled in the hinterlands of Sydney, Victoria and Tassie. With respect to how they were liked or disliked in early Australia what early Australia do you refer to as it was a Colony of the Empire manned and settled by the British Army, prison guards and convicts, so they were hardly going to get along.

  • @nacho1560 LOL davy jones???? you mean JOHN PAUL JONES. learn history m8

  • I agree, Seonidh. Still think our Highland Chiefs sold their people doon the water for that English gold. And far too easily.

  • THe chiefs were forcibly angliczed after Culloden.

  • Seachd12, I know what you're saying, but in the end they forgot their roots and money became more important than their clansfolk.

They began to stay in big houses in England and thus became absent landlords instead of clan chiefs.

How much they were forced into this anglicisation and how much they became greedy for this new found wealth all I know is that the people were forced out, replaced by sheep, and Chiefs became rich.

  • Ok, let us be clear. The people who wanted Gaelic "eradicated" and Gaeldom thoroughly destroyed may be dead as far as history is concerned, but the cultural bigotry they left in their wake is still felt to this day. Be on guard.

  • Well said amanda, you nailed it right on the head there!

  • I agree the UK government should hang its head in shame.

  • Very emotive singing by the Highland women, great to hear it preserved.

Sadly, we can't just blame the Clearances on the English. The Scottish Lowlands were just as much a foreign land after 1745. Likewise, the Highland chiefs, despairing at the loss of dignity after Culloden, decided to sell out their fellow brethren and replace them at profit with sheep.

That's the real tragedy. We sold ourselves out.

  • As Robert Burns said bought and sold for English gold. We can blame the British establishment for turning a blind eye and making scots greedy at the expense of their fellow countrymen.

  • @amandaberesford

Very well said. We may be in fashion the day, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Notice the Paper Parliament is spending more giving children in Glasgow and Edinburgh Gaelic lessons than on roads and other infrastructure in the north. I have often felt more welcome, or less of an oddity in Canada, France, even London than in Glasgow or Edinburgh. A great game has been played to place a lot of blame for our slaughter on the English, when in fact it was done by our own.

  • Thank you. How many videos are there like this one on here? This is the only one as far as I can tell. And apparently it's one too many for some people. How pathetic.

  • Boring?? Really? OK.

Of course we weren't the only people to have suffered at this point or indeed at any point in history but does that mean that this should be swept under the carpet? Or should the story be told?

Land was stolen and the people persecuted!

Would you to tell the Aborigines, Native Americans, Maori's or Zulus to "get over themselves" and just to simply forget their history.

Do you think we should just simmer down and behave like good little colonials. If so then bite me!

  • Good vid with good gaelic music.

Too often this story of human suffering gets ignored and swept under the carpet. If this happened today it would be called GENOCIDE!

This subject should be taught in every school in the world along with Rwanda and the Haloucaust!

  • Well said my friend also the Highlands went through a famine the same time as Ireland but the UK conveniently sweeps that out of our educational system too.

  • Very true. Not many people are aware of that in this country, I know little of the facts myself. Then again not too many Scots are aware of much of their history.

What references there are, they don't get bothered about and the rest over time has been stolen, hidden or destroyed!

I just feel as a Scot and the grandson of a Gael everyone should know this story, and more should be getting done to revive the Highlands/islands, which are still recovering to this day.

  • I agree my friend its little more than a supression of the truth and the genocide of our people.

  • Read John Prebble's Highland Clearances.

Prebble was an Englishman brought up in Canada. It will tell you all you need to know.

  • the duchess of sutherland had an estimated fortune of 20 billion in 1850 but apparently no soul rip

  • once again, tapadh leath for this video.

  • Damn Them! The Corrupted whelps of Brave Chieftains who fought in the '45! to look into history and see Gaels cast other Gaels off the land and onto a damp freezing beach! All courtesy of the expensive gambling habits of Anglicized "Traitor" Scots who needed cash to pay debts! at least Lord selkirk had compassion. History will remember him.

  • in helmsdale my uncle and the from the village constructed a monument for the clearances

  • Could some1 explain to me what the Highland Clearances were. I dont mean to sound stupid, i realy am interested.

  • If you go to Wikipedia or google and put in 'Highland Clearances' you will see.

One of the most shameful periods in Highland History.

  • We are not Albanaich we are Gaels...independence matters little to us....we are not a trade-able commodity..

  • top class

  • So very sad. Part of Scotland died with those clearances. To think, sheep were counted as more important that people. Just goes to show.

Although it did good to some, it did worse to others.

  • the lyrics.... :) He mandu 's truagh nach digeadh He mandu siod 'gham iarraidh He mandu gille 's litir Hi ri oro each is diollaid He mandu hi ri oro ho ro hu o Nam biodh agam sgiath a ghlaisein iteag nan eoin spog na lachain Shnamhainn na caoil air an tarsuinn an Caol Ileach 's an Caol Arcach 'S rachainn a steach chon a' chaisteal 's bheirinn a mach as mo leannan.
  • David john means that we will live as Scots and not Brits in this country yet again saor alba = free Scotland

  • Tha an canan is clann an gaidheal......ann Alba fhathast!!

  • What do you say? Anybody help me with the translation?

  • the language and children of the gael........in scotland yet! ..saor alba

  • thnx Davidjohn. Not quite sure what it still means though. I read what you wrote in English fine but the meaning of the context is what throws me for loop. Thank you Ladd

  • Hi Oighrig77

We love your film - it's haunting.

I have sent you a message through your youtube inbox. Would love to talk to you!

  • Where did you get this song? It's beautiful.

  • It's an early 17th century love song called "He mandu" and this version is from the CD "Scottish Tradition 2 - Music of the Western Isles" put forth by Edinburgh's School of Scottish Studies, sung by Mrs Kate MacLeod (and chorus).

  • @oighrig77 And by the by, it's not really a "love song" per say, although it tells a story of love. It's a waulking song.

  • Suas Leis a' Ghàidhlig!

  • awsome

  • Well done for putting this on u tube.Hauntingly beautiful

  • Thank you - It could be better, but then again it's the first "video" I've made.
