I used the poles on the shortest setting and did this when the slope was pretty shallow. I was poling to keep up momentum rather than getting off and just pulling the sled. On steeper slopes I've use the ice axe as a rudder. Sometimes poles can be put together and used the same way. Usually I just drop a heel or toe to create some drag.
How well were you able to go down a grade with your poles I went with the same poles of yours waiting on snow to try have a trip planned for February Thanks
