I'm a little embarassed to have to admit that Carreras does not in fact sing all the notes in this particular performance. Like most tenors, he here skips the low C (one octave below middle C) on "irati." I was referring to his Phillips studio recording where he does sing it. As far as I know Bergonzi never sang that note (and he started as a baritone). This is a sort of Chris Merritt note.
No one is perfect in this aria but Carreras is close.
Carreras actually sings all the notes and gets the rhythm right. Only Domingo also does. Not Bjoerling, or Di Stefano, or Bergonzi. Listen to them all on the Verdi Discography site. Usually Bergonzi is the most accurate of the composer's intentions. I heard Bergonzi do this role in Vienna and Carreras do it in SF (1977). I remember hearing Carreras's name being mention by two men standing near me (I don't speak Germen) as they discussed Bergonzi. They too knew that Jose was better than Carlo.
I was present in Budapest in his Ballo in Maschera... Ricciarelli was in the pro scenium ... just watching...and that Carrearas was the best ever... I love the geat voices, Bonisolli, MDM, Corelli and others but this was Heaven on the Earth God be present that's it
those who refer to Carreras sounding in better form may be refering to his wonderful work with the operas of Traviata, Boheme, Adriana Lecrouver with Caballe in 1976 and the like. I completely agree with you.
I do not remember a single recording where he did not have an unhealthy approach to the passagio... I guess *that* ruined his voice ;) Next to trying to imitate di stefano.
But he must be one of the most emotional singers ever... That easily makes up for the technical deficience.
Agree with you... making his voice bigger than it really was is the fact that ruined his voice...that´s why his passaggio and high notes turns a bit white (different color) than his middle gorgeous sound. Of course, hevay voice equals difficult in high notes aproach. His ilness just makes that the effects of this abuse show´s up more quickly and was not the direct cause of his damage ... the same with Di Stefano´s famous carpet fairies story
Non sale neanche con una pistola alla tempia. L'interpretazione, il personaggio? Ci sono soltanto preoccupazione e un po' di mestiere.

Only one tenor that I know sang the low C in this aria and that was Carlos Montane in ;le dolce canzone; sang it pianissimo

What a pretty voice he had in the beginning. Not a big pipe but that hardly matters.

I heard Bergonzi sing it at the Old Met with Price. Doesn't get any better as far as I'm concerned.

Carreras was truely a great liric tenor who inwisely switched to heavier repertoir where his voice became heavier and wobly.
Bonisolli also did the same thing but succesfuly, he sounded gtreat as a liric and dramatic.
For the succsesful switch, I gues, one needs not only a wish but technique and voice.
Look what's happening to most of the liric voices switching to dramatic(Alagna)

the 1970's were truly Carreras's greatest years! Too bad because he truly had one of the finest lyric voices of the 20th century.

to me, his voice is better than domingo in some operas, is more clear and the sound is fresh and beautiful.

Well I think he sounds wonderful, and as for him trying to imitate Di Stefano? thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
