  • This song was released in 1979 as a single - still awsome

  • You're the coolest guy ever, Gary. See you at the Machine Music tour!

  • 21 people didn't see the rape machine.

  • I miss this version of Gary Numan. I miss when he was praying to the aliens and came from outer space to save the human race.

Now, he has spiky hair and dresses like a Hot Topic reject. Even the guitar lines in his live performances make him sound more like Linkin Park than something truly amazing.

  • Let's all go down to the park, I will be number 3

  • I want his chair

  • 3 words F35KING SEX GOD

  • I discovered this song by accident when I was super high..thank you lord Jesus Christ. I believe now

  • amazing!

  • its like.. stephen hawking on crack!!!! i love this, great sound live haha

  • 21 people are up in the park.....

  • Now that's stylish!

  • He sings my soul

  • If you follow First Wave on SiriusXm on facebook bug them to play this!! Thanks

  • I cant get over how f'ing cool this video is

  • great film and great song IN the film! go gary in the gary mobile! !

  • This song (and this rendition) started so many electronic bands. You youngins' have no idea....

  • Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

  • Someone told me that the little car is the rape machine.....

  • I saw that close up it ingenius!

  • Absurd, lovely, and hilarious!

  • As a bass player and drummer myself. I think the drum style and the bass give so much to this band. This has to be heavy. But yeah great synths.

  • Great tune but what the balls was the little car about?? What was he thinking???

  • @kenhen33 The car is the best part. I love how he...uh...performs with it.

  • @kenhen33 In his car, he feels safest of all.

  • I appreciate the synthesizers, but Marylin rocked it!

  • @6969cobra he did a good cover, yeah, but as a big MM fan i gotta say, Manson or even Trent is not as good as Numan

  • @6969cobra brian warner sucks balls.

  • As much as this creeps me out I actually like it, WTF? Am I having A stroke?

  • It's weird that there is NO VIDEO, DVD, etc. of this available anywhere. I remember when I saw this on an old cable program called "Night Flight". They played the entire series of live concert performances. I SHOULD HAVE HAD MY VCR ON "RECORD"!!!!!

  • @phantasm1004 This is from the video "Urgh! A Music War". Out of print, but you can find copies on eBay or Amazon.

  • @phantasm1004

WB has released it on DVD. Go to Google type in "urgh a music war wb" it will be the first result

  • I had the piano version played on a loop as guests arrived for my wedding, afterwards the vicar asked me who it was as he wanted to buy a copy, ha ha.

  • Gary is a GOTH-WAVE DEITY!

It was 1982 when I first watched "URGH! A MUSIC WAR"

    I was 13.

I have never been the same.

By the way, the best 'cover' of this song IMHO is the FOO FIGHTERS.

  • The greatest gothic rock song of all time, superb.

  • I like it, but in a way, this is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

  • @bagli1 Why is it 'absolutely ridiculous' ?

  • @Beatmyguest001 Because the funny-looking dude is being wheeled around in a little buggy while weird music plays. What do you need, a diagram?

  • @jamesharvey I still fail to see what's ridiculous about it. I think it's great.

  • I really appreciate Gary Numan, even some of his lesser-known albums. A truly unique character. He so perfectly encapsulates a certain, intangible 'vibe' of the '80s, for me. Wish there were more modern musical acts that have a similar energy. Favorite Numan song ever....

  • Very nice! could listen to this all day.

  • i didnt know Capt Pike could sing...

  • GENIUS! I bought the 'URGH - A Music War' double LP in '86, it's all great, and this stood out as a gem on it!

  • Genial

  • I wonder if this is the car he wrote about?

  • This seems to be the best version of this epic song

  • "How do you like your quasi-futuristic clothing, Mr. Powers?"

  • You can tell how much he hates his human fans....that makes me smile.

  • what a great band he had

  • i'm 13 and have an ever so slightly unhealthy obsession with gary numan. he is the coolest person EVER!!! this is one of the best songs he did, along with stormtrooper in drag

  • @luvfranzferdinand - You are a rare and wonderful being...

  • @luvfranzferdinand

    You have good taste :)

  • i love how he strolls around in that space ship like wheelchair, lol sweet!

  • I'm only 25. I think Justin Bieber is enjoyable and fun! I wear Ugg Boots and skinny jeans. I don't shop at Hot Topic. And you know what else.... I LOVE Gary Numan. I like him always! I like call out the dogs, fascination, replicas. Gary numan's probably the best musician ever. And alphaville is the best band ever! :):)

  • @LauraSwtBriar - You are awesome. Never be ashamed of who you are...

  • I remember seeing this concert at the odean Birmingham in 81 and it was amazing nothings ever topped it since :-) Ive seen alot of bands since but always still go back to Gary xxx

  • I remember seeing this concert at the odean Birmingham in 81 and it was amazing nothings ever topped it since :-)

  • How can I get a car like that.

  • @4ulefties

believe it is a modified sinclair c5

  • Gary f****** rocks.

  • IM A MACHMAN

  • Gawd i still love this song from the 80's and i could listen to these synthesizers all day and night !!

  • I think he was trying to be like that Dalek creator Davros. But better looking. Or maybe he's trying to be Professor X from the X-Men....

  • I love the bumper car from the fairground! LOL But I don't care I love Gary to death!

  • Another Gary Numan gem.

  • So good it hurts. Everything is perfect in this song/performance.

  • So good it hurst., Everything is perfect in this song/performance.

  • The future starts in the eighties >>>>

  • Gary Numan is a being from an alternate universe where dystopia is a good thing.

  • @JimmyFaust Gary Numan is Sheldon Cooper's English half-brother.

  • Wow - I saw this live at the Long Beach Arena in California (I was just 15 years old at the time). What memories--THANKS!!!!

  • He could obviously see ahead at the George Soros attack on Brittan.I wouldn't be surprised if in the near future Europe starts naming their children number's.Great song great musician.

  • o0 ! Gary Numan is Palpatine...

  • He's so hot. I want him and his machines.

  • Ten kawałek nagrał Kult-niesamowite !!!

  • The video is so dorky. I prefer the new videos of these songs.

  • @ocean3da your generation is dorky. I'll take the genuine article, thank you.

  • @egl2r

I'm not an old timer, i'm not going to necessarily like everything that was in the past, am I.

My generation is fucked up because of the previous ones who spent all the wealth.

  • @ocean3da lol, I guess at 42 I'm an old timer :)

  • @egl2r lol "Then i dont feel so old turn 42 tis mth. But hey its all good."

  • @ocean3da

The largest stage set built in the UK ever, and its dorky? Uh, this is a set that was on tour in 1980. Paid for by Numan. WHAT crap artist these days pays for the most extravagant set to tour with as a way to say THANK YOU to fans? NONE ....and he did not charge rediculous prices either. He lost hundreds of thousands of $ (uk pounds) to make this tour and make it something fans will never forget. Make sure you know what the history is before the word 'dorky' leaves your keyboard.

  • @micromusic

it is dorky thats what I've chosen to say, Gary Numan doesn't believe in giving any money. I do, I am a socialist, I want to help those that I can. I don't like his extreme view of not giving anything anybody. His songs are cool, but I don't like him personally.

  • @ocean3da Why can't people post on videos without bringing politics into it? Seriously how did you go from talking about a video being dorky to this generational money bullshit?

  • @LetzRock1

Because I felt it was worth bringing up, just in case anybody goes over the top about him.

  • @ocean3da No, it wasn't worth bringing up. But thank you for the effort in starting another argument on a YouTube video.

  • @micromusic THIS set is the largest one ever built for a concert in the UK? Really?? Does it still have that title after 30 years or did Michael Jackson finally beat him out or somebody else?

  • I was one of the dry-ice machine operators, and I also helped with the set construction....I had to put the "T" up in the centre, and I had problems with hights.

  • @cantwellp1 Did you meet Gary then? What was he like back then?

  • this song is so GREAT, it makes me shiver!

  • @rfranquinho Yes I did meet Gary, nice guy. I remember his pa standing by a window at one of the gigs, with Gary by his side overlooking the queue of punters and Gary was picking out females from the crowd to come back after the show, if you want to know more you will have to wait until the end of next year and buy my book, which is going to be called "Tales from a Roadies Life" (copyright 2011).

  • the future, from the past. so good

  • What is so amazing, when you think about it, is how original he was. There was nobody who sounded like him. He invented an entire genre. He is a hugely influential artist.

Plus, this performance too, is absolutely stunning. He redefined "live" in a truly new and fresh way. I'll always be a huge fan, and am so very pleased to see him finally getting his due from the current group of young bands. Godspeed Gary.

  • And seriously, as long as i can see this video...then life really isn't all too bad....if we live in a world where coffin bumper cars exist....and good music like this exist.....then i mean really, life isn't that bad....big smile.....and thank you Gary Numan!!!!!.....you make my life livable right now....i just wish i knew somebody as cool as you....much love...

  • Comment removed

  • It's a fucking Gary Numan Little Coffin Bumper Car..... l'm laughing my ass off....i fucking love this song......and seriously, his music videos and concert clips are some the fucking best shit I've ever seen.........he's the fucking man!! there's just nothing as cool as this anymore.....

  • OH YEAH! Thx for posting the best URGH!!!!! Yes awesome!!!

  • One of the best live shows ever.. G.N. was way ahead of his time. The "New Wave" music groups of the late 70's early 80's were special. This is real music..

  • what a great song... first heard it in that movie, "Times Square"

  • @cfschroeder48 lol Gary a spot on pilot nowadays see him regular in the Harvard

  • Question for any of you who were there live - did you not worry that Gary's foot might slip on the accelerator peddle plunging head first off the stage - remember his flying was too brilliant either!

  • Who comes on stage with a rolling coffin?....thats brilliant!

  • I totally want to buy that chair and drive it around my house all day

  • Win with the simon says lights!

  • Coolest guy ever.

  • Oh Gary You are the best.

We are the luckiest SOB's on Earth.

No Generation had music like we had just us.

Born in 65 and loving it!

  • I want that little car he is driving around in :) thanks for all the good music gary numan!

  • the best ever in synth music.

  • Thirty one years on and it's still a perfect piece of synth-pop.

  • Emperor Palpatine would be proud.

  • Brilliant!

  • I SAW A RAPE MACHINE ONCE _ IN RICHMOND PARK- IT LOOKED LIKE A

    DYSON VACUM CLEANER

  • Still fucking brilliant. I think I was10 when I first saw this on Night Flight on USA. I read somewhere years later he went almost broke paying for the stage shows and lights etc..

  • He looks like he's pulling into his VP parking space at Vestron Video for another day of work in the future.

  • My friends brother loaned me this album when I was 13 (I was hooked by the cover) I went home and played it and was an instant fan. This song spooked me on many occassions when I was home alone late at night and I just loved it and still find myself humming it at work.I hope to catch Gary in Toronto in October. He is truly an artist.New Wave was Gary Numan along with other pioneers in the 70's.Gary's 80's styles were more pop by then but he keeps evolving.Numan fan forever.<3

  • I totally think that lady gaga sat down and thought, hey, imma rip off new wave.

Most of her songs are r'n'b or just flat out pop. But hey, i guess it's easy to rip on her because she's has such a massive part of mainstream music today.

  • @Robospace that's bullshit dude there was a lot of good stuff till about 87 then everything started going down hill

  • @Robospace

your absolutely nuts in the head "fails compared to the 90's and the same level as 2000" man your music collection must SUCK

  • @Robospace dude you're out of your mind every snot nosed asshole today is TOTALLY RIPPING OFF 80'S MUSIC! and attempting to rewrite history with it! most of your generation have no concept of 80's music much, MUCH less 60's or 70's music. Go back to school.

  • @111noir2000 I total agree with you, Jay-Z ripping of Forever Young by Alphaville is a perfect example and then there was a guy sampling Need You Tonight by INXS

  • @BatteredKatStudios give them credit for recognizing good music

  • @Robospace The 80's WAS the best decade of music!

  • @BatteredKatStudios except all the others

  • Bloody brilliant.

  • Fucking Awesome

  • To Ukrainian folks this exact video was probably brought by Olexiy Kovzhun in his early 90-s TV show 'Post'

  • @BurlBrule Are you claiming that the 70s did not in some regards even outstrip the 80s in terms of advanced compositional techniques being used by the progressive / fusion bands and the basis of funk which this track (originally from the late 70s) is obviously drawing from stylistically. I love Numan's 80s period, but his style was bred as a result of the merging of punk to prog and funk.

  • Genialt

  • you speak the truth burlbrule

  • is it me or have I entered a Magical World?

    Just an amazing song

  • Thanks for this vid, I've heard this song for decades but I never saw this concert.

  • Yes, its been blah since the 1980s

  • At least Gaga rips off the best!

  • In parts "Down in the Park" sounds like a piece of classical music. I would love to hear a full orchestra perform it.

  • It sounds almost like Christmas music to me. How it has that really cold wintery sound.

  • Well said .. completely agree.. the 80's new wave/ alt was everything.. Music today has lost its style and flavor.. I would have loved to have seen this concert..

  • Urgh has been released on DVD as part of the Warner Archives collection. However, they are not readily available in stores. The Warner Archive Collection presses the films on DVD-R's and there is no remastering, no special features...just the movie itself.

I do know a place in NYC that carries this title, it's called Cinema Classics.

  • The dvd is available now. Warner Brother's has released it as part of their Warner Archive series.

The Warner Archive series though is not available in a lot of stores though. Also the Archive series is DVD-R's, and the movies they release this was are not remastered, no special features, no nothing.

I know a place in NYC called Cinema Classics that does carry the title though.

  • to those trying to find the urgh dvd, google the torrent and there it is. i guess i should mention here that piracy is theft and the rest, so act responsibly..

  • Beautiful song!

  • nice1 thriller,,can u tell me the name of the dvd,do u know if its available?,,many thanks 4 the info

  • thanks tone,,remember watching the full concert about 28/29 years ago on tv,but know nothing about it

  • Gary was decades ahead of his time !!

  • any1 know if this concert is available on dvd?

  • @alanlad1 - alanlad -this is a clip from an 80's film called URGH, a Music War that is unfortunately, hard to find.

  • @alanlad1 yea it is i hav it

  • @THRILLER761 ,nice1 matey, can u tell me wots its called and if its still available 2 buy?,thanks 4 the info

  • so tacky c'mon a luna park car

  • questa canzone che mi ha segnato sin dai miei 14 anni rimarrà sempre nel profondo del mio cuore .....

  • He looks like Davros in that chair

  • This is pretty advanced staging for 1981, unique lighting, wireless mic, and of course the suv (stage utility vehicle). Take a look at some lady gaga concert footage. Definite similarities!

  • Well, Lady Gaga obviously ripoffs new wave scene and her teenage fans think she's original. That's how it goes these days

  • Good Point.

  • @Assiman I totally agree with you. The late 1970's and early 80's was the very days of making new music styles, the Punk style (1975) and the new romantic style in ca 1980 Visage & Ultravox.

  • @Assiman well said...

  • @Assiman Your right. I'm 16 and my fav artist artists are tori amos, marilyn manson and david bowie.... no one has taste today

  • @Assiman Dale Bozzio is the blueprint for Lady Gaga

  • @2simontemplar

I didn't actually know about Dale Bozzio. Thanks chap.

  • @Assiman Dale Bozzio was the singer of Missing Persons. The drummer Terry was her husband.

check out the Missing Persons clips here

  • @2simontemplar omg when I saw Lady Gaga I thought of Dale Bozzio, too! I love Missing Persons, lol. Lady Gaga is unoriginal and people at my school are always saying the love her because "she's original". pfft

  • @Assiman dude lady gaga rips off Bazio from the Missing Persons!

  • @Assiman I could not agree more. lady gaga is shit any way you cut it.

  • @Assiman yeah, lady gaga is a rip off but that sorta thing has been going on forever! Elvis ripped off old rhythm and blues bands, Dylan ripped off Woody Guthrie, soft cell ripped off Suicide!! it never ends and it probably never will!

  • @liedowninthelight True, except Lady Gaga sucks.

  • @JimmyFaust YES. hahaha :)

  • except this is GOOD music!

  • he is still on tour believe it or not
