i don't know if this really represents the breadth of american television, supposing it is intended as satire. By that I mean I don't really see a point, while a lot of programming does include hyper exaggerated families it really doesn't strike a clear criticism of american television or life.

I don't think this is so much a satirism so much as what a lot of Japanese really think American prime-time television(especially that aimed at African Americans) is like.

You have to keep in mind that Japan is a much more homogenized nation. They don't get a lot of exposure to much of the things Americans view daily 'except' through television, so they're likely as not to just take it at face value.
