When one of our younger mezzo's can equal Cossotto's phrasing and intonation then I will lend them my ears...till then...we shall see who will be capable to equal her and the late Great, equally very great Giulietta Simionato...
cossotto is fabulous. I have always thought so, and could care less, even though I am a Callas fan, that some thought she upstaged her in Norma.. Callas should have thought of that, when she of her own volition stopped practicing, and let her voice go... That is not Cossotto's fault. She is a dynamic, presence, with quite the voice.
I love how gracious she is with the audience. She knows instinctively that the "show" is for them and I sense from her that she cares about her audience and really wants them to get the most out of her and the entire evening! It's so cool...!!
I actually think that nowithstanding her AMAZING SPECTACULAR voice (untill 1973-74, no more) she has always been a full-of-herself primadonna, showoff and unpleasant on stage. My 2 cents.
"Untill 1973-4" is simply not true. She is magnificent in her 1981 Verona performance of Aida, and recorded at least two very good studio recordings after 1974 - Macbeth (1976) and Tancredi (1978). After years of working together, Price invited Cossotto to sing Amneris in Price's final performance of Aida (1985). Probably she didn't think Cossotto was too bad, personally or professionally. Cossotto's performance was again great.
@AmatureComposer that's why I said SPECTACULAR till 1973-4. After that she definitely began to have problems with her high notes and pitch. And she still had a GREAT instrument, and sometimes was good, sometimes very good, sometimes mediocre.
Her diva behavior may put off some, but this woman loves to sing, she sings extremely well, and she has a beautiful voice. And her smile just wins me over!
Brava! This one belongs to Cossotto! I once had a cassette tape of her singing this aria and I wore it out - have been hearing it in my head ever since. Glorious. I can understand the comparison to Verdi; this is Donizettti's "O Don Fatale" - very similar construction and excellent composition. Funny, for being a coloratura lover, I find all the best arias written for mezzos! Anna Bolena my favorite opera, I think the finer writing in it is for Giovanna, too.
That's silly, Verdi imitated Donizetti any chance he had. Just listen to Aida, Trovatore, Traviata, even Falstaff, there are tons of Donizetti rip-offs all over the scores. No wonder your screen name says Amature, lol
Wow, now you mention it I do hear a similarity. I saw Fidelio this weekend LA opera, and I thought beethoven sometimes sounded like Mozart....or the other way around....Anyways, I have sung this aria many times. It's great for Spinto Mezzos , which I am..

Che noiosa cantante. Ogni volta canta uguale, senza vita, senza cuore. Come una machina!

I will say this for the indomitable Fiorenza -: she always gave everything to her audience. She was a force of nature.

The role of Anna Bolena actually in the final scene demands both mezzo tessitura and high soprano, agility as well as heroic declamation, etc.

Making it sound like Verdi is actually an advantage.

Wonder how much attention people are paying to nicknames.
It's like some idiotic attempts to foretell the future by someone's name;)
Everyone knows that Verdi was influenced by Donizetti.
That the reason why making it sound like Verdi is an advantage, since many singers make it sound like Bellini.

Actually if anything Verdi was inspired by Donizetti in works like Nabucco, Macbeth, Trovatore...not Traviata or Aida.

Very powerful, brava Fiorenza though I admit she makes it sound more Verdi than Donizetti.
