I am happy to see the young man becoming valedictorian at a predominantly black college. I am also happy to see any young man graduating college. If the majority of black students and school administrators can accept him being valedictorian, then why are some predominantly white schools can't accept a black valedictorians and black students? Colleges and schools should be an institution of learning for everyone regardless of race. I also believe in universal education and that college should be
Didn't Mr. Packwood say that this HBCU was an easy school to achieve straight-A's? So much so, that he told his brother to apply to an HBCU. Grade inflation per se?
@773SleepyHollow Whether he said it or not, the fact remains HBCUs are bottom of the barrel when it comes to academic standards. They pretty much exist to make low-achieving blacks feel like they are smart -- a remedial high school erroneously called a college. It's like affirmative action -- yeah you might have graduated from a "college" but everyone knows it's mostly because standards were drastically lowered for you.
@cybersuh1 You're not very bright, are you? Affirmative act. & other forms of preferential treatment give certain students advantages in admission (African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, low-income students, regional-diversity students, legacy students, males (females of all races outperform males overall, so males are sometimes given an advantage), children of donors, et cetera), but they do NOT lower standards for graduation. If you can't cut it, you WILL flunk out.
@cybersuh1 As for HBCU's, yes it's true that they're not as elite as the best non-HBCU's, but that's partially because the best black students tend to go to the non-HBCU's. You're simply wrong to call them all "bottom-of-the-barrel." Morehouse for example is a mid-tier liberal-arts college as measured by US News & World Report & by average SAT scores. Its sister school Spelman is a good amount better, ranked by US News near such well-known non-HBCU's as DePauw, Reed, & Wheaton.
@zippyman818 And now thanks to Tom Joyner, you can get the entire HBCU experience ONLINE while sitting in your drawers and pickin' your teeth at HBCUonline (dot) com. Fewer smells this way also. Mr. Joyner has a goldmine on his hands and he only has to have a better than 16% retention rate to claim success for an online educational experience. If you don't like malt liquors and menthol cigarettes; socializing with real live people and stepdancing in large groups was overrated anyways, correct?
Morehouse College should not be about cultivating men but cultivating only black men. Morehouse College should accept only black men to become its students.
Also, the Morehouse College faculty should be only black men.
Bottomline, Morehouse College should not be advertised or presented as a mens college but The Black Man's College.

I love this story. I go to Clark and I see the minority at the school and they are treated no differently their skin is not their commodity. We have a small diverse group of asian, hispanic, Islanders, and people of different religions. It shouldnt be an issue. Embrace it, change is what we need for progression! I <3 the AUC!!!
If I'm looking at an HBCU, I'm looking to be surrounded by my people in every aspect form homecoming titles to valedictorian. It's one of the few places that we can get that. If I didn't want it, I'd go elsewhere. Can't be black and proud catering to whites. It don't work, like being a cop catering to criminals.
Shhhhh, spellcheck young sister and I've read plenty and about to graduate. I'm ignorant on a lot, I can agree with you on that, but everyone is. I'm not ignorant as to who my enemies are and not ignorant on how to protect me and my people.
He earned it. Black people who make firsts in this country are always recognized, especially now in a collegiate environment. He worked hard, is well spoken, and sexy. The faculty and staff are proud of him. We always holler how white people are so racist. We should be happy more white people are embracing our culture rather than putting us down. You sexy boo. Do your thing.
how come we dont have "all white" colleges and make a deal out of first black valedictorian? oh wait.. that would be too racist right? this is a country with double standards and contradiction.
Blacks need to begin to realize that the "affirmative action" principles that allowed Black men a leg up (sort of), are ending. You will have to compete directly in the new, global age. Turn off BET, turn off ESPN, and STUDY so you have something other than diversity to offer the community at large.
The guy worked hard, and out-competed Black men, on their home court (plain and simple). Maybe that will motivate the next class of "Morehouse Men" to study harder.
Who made more progress in the civil rights movement? MLK Was assassinated by bigots, Malcolm X was assassinated by his own Muslim brethren, because he didn't fall in line w/there agenda. Make a move to change whatever you don't like, or else you're just bitching like everyone else. Shit or get off the pot.
Even though this story is about three months old, I love it. People need to stop being judgmental and just accept that what this young man has done is nothing but a positive thing. He's amazing-- and yeah, pretty damned gorgeous!!!!

Why do we consistently sell out? Where are the black valedictorians for Columbia, Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Brown? When we graduate from these mostly white colleges where is our press and media attention? White people are sickening when they want to be around us all the damn time. Morehouse picked this white boy because of the media attention and press they get for it.
Socialist, OOH. You have the GOP talking points out. Good luck with that. If you're so threatened go do something about it. Dr. King didn't sit on his ass and say "damn, I wish we got treated better".
You are right! Dr. King wasted time marching on capital askin the government for help. When like Malcom X he should have been promoting self reliance in our black community. At least he didnt say he was marchin in 57 states like Obama..
