I never understood why he is a rat in the western version. Apparently, they are blind, and cannot tell the difference between a fox and a rat, even with the tail (which should be a dead giveaway). He isn't even part of the same order as a rat. Ko'on-no-kami is a fox, and a member of the order carnivora (specifically in the family canidae and the genus vulpes), while rats are members of the order rodentia (genus ratta).
@VaderNES yeah when I was young I used to not understand very much when they call him as a rat...I always though "but...his tail...he's a fox! I so simply..." bah -.-
@VaderNES I figured it out. Foxes are the animal that defines evil in Japan. Rats are the natural enemy of cats and the animal that defines evil in Western countries like America, England and Canada. So making people think he was more ratty probably helped put across the evil enemy of the cats image.
@Ryoku75 I wonder why they decided on Big Cheese rather than sticking with Mr Kitisune or making something foxy, Big Cheese always made me think he was a rat.
That's like saying snagglpuss is straight.
