I love classic consoles, and the only gripe I have about the current ones is... honestly, no game can reach its full potential on a console in the modern day. Mods alone make a PC title worth so much more than its console equivalent.

Yeah, there's a lot of rude PC fanboys, but there's a reason for they're so adamant.

I have to agree with you. Modding has been one reason why PC gaming has survived in the face of better, faster consoles. I have an XBOX 360 myself, but it's a Gen 1. Lately, however, I've added a 32x, Dreamcast, and CDi to my collection and have had my eye on a 3DO.

@MrHongKongBuffet I don't know if I'd call consoles faster, because even though they're more advanced than ever in this gen, they're still outmuscled by mid- to high-range PC's. The 360 has a tri-core processor, but it's an outdated design. The PS3 has a 3.2GHz processor, but it's single-core. A modern PC with a dual-core CPU running at 2.4GHz would smoke both consoles.

But yes, services like Steam and the creativity of modding communities have otherwise kept PC gaming alive and kicking.

By "better and faster," I was referring to the fact that the more powerful consoles of any given generation have tried to equal the power of contemporary PCs. The issue I have with PC gaming is the "expiration date" of games and PCs alike. I can't play new games on my 3 year old PC, nor can I play older games as it won't run them. My new laptop won't play jack diddly because its graphics card sucks (not that I bought it for gaming.)

@MrHongKongBuffet I'm not sure what your PC's problem is in that case, as even the crap-ass laptop I have to use for the time being can play pretty much any PC game from 2006 or so and earlier, with only a few exceptions occasionally. In the case of PC's, all you really need to play newer games most of the time is a graphics card upgrade, or maybe some extra RAM, if possible.

A mid-range PC -should- take nearly 10 years to be fully outdated, while consoles have a hard cutoff of around 5 years.

This system was ahead of its time. The chain connection of controllers gave you unlimitied amount of multiplayer capability. If you liked arcade action like me, games like Samurai Shodown and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo were arcade perfect. Add ons like M2 and VCD cards were going to make the system treasure to have. Unfortunately, the high price tag for both the system and the games killed it. Road Rash, Need For Speed, Monster Manor, and Killing time, memories memories.

I don't know the exact amount of sales the 3do made, but to my knowledge its less than 1 million, compared to the other systems at the time (Sega Genesis and SNES) that were making more than 30 million sales, developers were obviously more tempted to make on those systems. If the 3do had games from great developers like Konami, Taito, and Midway, it would have turned out to be a better system.

The graphics were ahead of the SNES and Genesis only because of the use FMV which replaced actual gameplay. The games on the 3DO where more like movies than games. Also it was WAY too expensive for the average child.

You have to bare in mind when this machine was released all there was; was crappy 16bit consoles like the sega mega drive. The ONLY competition it had was from a 486 DOS/Win 3.1 system that could not even play full screen video and cost much more. At the time it was brilliant pure and simple...... Sure the PlayStation came out and was cheaper and could push more pixels - but again it was a good year or two AFTER 3DO.

@Reinpret It was hard for a system to take off at 700 dollars. I got one when Panasonic dropped the price to 500 bucks even then it was way to high of a price back then.

Even when the PS3 came out in 2006 people did not want to pay 600 for 60gig model or 500 for the 20gig model.

Wing Commander 3 was great on 3DO. I had Wing Commander 3 for PS1 and it was a crappy port. It crashed with a bunch of white letters popped up looked like MS DOS.

As a young gamer, i took a look at what was available on the screen, and in my little mind the 3do looked the best. I know the playstation won out in the end, but the memories are non replaceable. Wing Commander 3 def was pretty amazing for its time, way ahead.
