Lil Wayne is talented in the sense that he doesn't write down his songs. He listens to the beat in the booth for half an hour or so then comes up with a song on the spot. Regardless of whether or not you like him you have to respect that that takes talent. I personally like Mat Kearney better because of the meaning behind his songs but I can't deny that Lil Wayne has talent.
honestly, to the people talking about rap, this guys actually good haha like dont compare him to lil wayne...cus if you read his bars, hes lyrically a better rapper. he has good flow, lyricism, and speed. lil wayne isnt even a good rapper, hes liked but hes not talented at all. he actually kinda sucks dick haha
@rabbittoyourfox I used to think the same way. He sings/raps his best when he's doing it live. After I saw him live it didn't really matter for me. This just shows how versatile his voice is.
Mat, I want so badly to love your music. You have a beautiful voice and beautiful lyrics I just can't. I cannot get over the fact that he's rapping. WHY do you rap your lyrics?!
@rabbittoyourfox - Maybe it's because I've been a fan since the "West in November" EP(which I still have, along with the original version of Stacie Orrico's "Security" that he raps on) but I like him better as a rapper. He kind of lost me with City of Black & White. I heard that Young Love is going back to the earlier rapping style. But based on the first single I don't think that's the case. Either way, he's got fans who love him singing and fans who love him rapping. :)
@rabbittoyourfox thing is, his voice makes his raps sound that much better and then he sings in the backround which it makes sound eveeeen better. No homo of course and i'm no homophobe haha. and i totally get what you're saying, but that's just my two cents.
@rabbittoyourfox I personally don't mind it, and I am definitely not a rap fan. But check out his City of Black and White album because it has good songs and I don't think there is that much rapping on that album. There may not be any come to think of it.
To the person looking for more good songs by Mat Kearney: If you like the rap sound present in this song then check out Undeniable, Nothing Left to Lose (more pop without as much rap), Bullet (heavy on rap), and Renaissance. All of them are from the album Nothing Left to Lose which has a good mix of rap and pop that can be heard in this song. His newest album, City of Black and White, draws more on the pop elements and less of the rap...to nearly not existing...but it's still a great album.
@crossfader85 Actually Mat Kearney started out as a Christian Musician. "Nothing Left to Lose" is his second album, the songs you mentioned were originally on an album called "Bullet." The song originally was about girls in the US and how they have to go down the path they were going cause God loved them. Somewhere along the line it became more about the US of A .
I accidentally put a thumbs down on the lah33, mistake. Good point and this guy is really something going mainstream with a positive message. We need more like him.
I love that he raps about things that matter instead of all that other junk. I Love the acoustic rap style. If anyone knows of any other good songs that have this great style plz leet me know.
i love it. a white guy who can rap about LIFE and songs with MEANING instead of just s*x drugs and drinking vs. Jay-Z and lil wayne and kanye. plus he's christian like me. =D <3
i think this is my favorite mat kearney song! it is just so fucking amazing! the lyrics, the rapping just gave me chills. like he is seriously better than a rapper like lil wayne that raps about a girl shaking her ass. mat's lyrics are so meaningful. words just cant describe how beautiful his work is!!!!!
A King born under that morning star because a crown of thorns was placed to erase each tear that's touched your face and His palms and sides were pierced with spears, He hung in love just to draw us near..my friends He loves this whole world!!! He can rhyme tight and he knows the truth 4TW~!
this is an amazing song and it is about Jesus Christ. Just listen at 2:55 it says, "The king born under that morning star." This is a very inspirational song.
This song is not about the USA...It's about an American girl who has to deal with all the nonsense brought to her from boys, drugs, peers, etc. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. IMO, she is also lacking a father figure, which if you listen to the bridge, Mat tells her that Jesus Christ is all she needs. Listen from 2:42 to 3:15. Especially the lyric (at 3:03), "His palms and side were pierced with spears, He hung in love to draw you near." He is talking about Christ and that Christ is all ANYBODY needs!
He actually said this song is about both. He used his mastery of music to imply how a girl is struggling and how America is struggling falling out from Jesus as well. This song is clearly about America AND a girl and he meant it that way.
hey guys..i think you got the meaning of this song all wrong.
its not about our nation, its about what the girls of our nation have bought into and what they are subjected to. give the second a listen along with the lyrics and you will see that its mat trying to reach out and console and empathize with girls of the youth generation.
Oh yeah! I also wanted to comment that his writing is freakin brilliant. It's so good that it has reduced me to tears shamelessly. His allusion to Jesus Christ is so crazy! In my opinion, it symbolizes how America sacrificed herself by being the first nation that built her own government. I mean, she was the first one wasn't she? In the whole entire world, she was the first nation to gain her independence and her sacrifice paved the way for other nations to do the same, like France.
This is so weird...I'm reading about government right now and this song just makes me soo freakin more passionate about being American. I love America so much and I love our history and everything it represents...freedom, liberty, and opportunity. I don't care what anyone else says, I'll always be patriotic. But Kearney's right of course. We have come to the "crossroad" where we must choose if we're still going to continue onto the path of greatness or if we're just going to fall into the shadow
thats great. do you also realize we pushed back the people who lived in america before us, burned down their villages, shot them, raped them, and then left them to die? i am an american, and all throughout my history classes, i am shocked by what i learn. we have so much pride, because we are a rich, selfish nation.
TRUE DAT. i love our contry but it's just terrible what we did to earn our respect. But why keep looking at the past when we have the future to worry about? You can't change the past but you CAN change the future
This is by far the best commentary on the United States as we know it that I've heard it. The lyrics and rhythm are breathtaking, as is the subject matter. This guy is a brilliant writer. We can only hope he has a long career, there is only better to come!
it's not about a girl..it's about the united states.
"my girl america is just a youth in this world"--we're a relatively new country. "her peers"= other countries. "in god we trust engraved on the treasures of her nation"--that phrase is on our currency. etc etc. it's about how he's praying for this country because it's gotten itself into a bad situation..but that we shouldn't "stop believing."
basically, the whole song is a metaphor of sorts. i love it. =]
@starsxgoxblue i think it can easily be seen as both a metaphor for america itself and for a single girl in it. generation praying for reconsililation, magazine ads, sex, drama, smoking majauana. i think based on interpretation can be seen as just a normal girl in america being pressured by ideas of beauty and fitting in or be america the nation itself and it's place in the world.
@starsxgoxblue THANK YOU!!! finaly, i've been trying to find a video of this song that isn't a bunch of pictures of girls, and i'm like, dose any one understand its about america??
@starsxgoxblue That's only half the song, it's a metaphor in the sense that it stands for two things at once, It is a girl he's talking about, and the country in a hidden meaning.
@starsxgoxblue definitely about how girls are mistreated and oppressed in America when they can stand up and be something more instead of falling for all the lies. but seeing it for other things is cool too :D
3. That person will ask u out or say they love u tomorrow.
4. Heres the thing copy and paste to 2 other videos
dont read this (cause it really works). You will get kissed on the nearest Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life however if you dont post this comment 2 at least 3 videos u will die within 2 days so try it my friend told me to copy and paste this.
this song is like one of the most touching songs ever. amazing lyrics, amazing voice, amazing beat. gives me shivers, and im not even christian. but just.. hits hard.
Would anyone know where this particular version of the song is available for purchase? I can only find the album version, which I already have, but this cut is raw and I would love to have it. Thanks in advance.
The song is an American History lesson. Mat's a poet and uses metaphor brilliantly. He uses the narrative of a young teenage girl struggling through life to her ultimate purpose and maturity as a word picture to describe America's journey and struggle from 'her' birth in 1776 to her current state of disillusionment and identity crisis. Our nation really is like a teenage girl with so much promise, but so much pain. Always under pressure, always criticized, tied to past mistakes, etc
Faith like a child from your first birth You left it in the dirt on your worst hurt And I see each tear and every scar The hands that have held you where you are And I can see we've strayed so far A king born under that morning star As a crown of thorns was placed to earase Each tear that's touched your face And his palms and sides were pierced with spears He hung in love just to draw you near My girl, out of this whole world Can't you see this is where we started?
this song is amazing. the only rap song i've ever loved. it's so true. i'm a teenage girl trying to survive in this world. it's not easy even for someone who has enough faith to hold onto like i do. i see these people at school and all i see is emptiness. this guy i know is on probation for smoking pot...hooking up on weekends...all that stuff. it's sad what's happening to the youth in america.
I was writing an essay about injustice in Americatoday and I stumbled on this video. You know, I never really put much thought on how much the internal system of the U.S. is corrupted and law is outweighed by personal profits. So many people are deprived of proper justice. So I've decided to pursue my dreams of becoming a lawyer, not one who cares about profits and such, but an honest one, one that upholds the true meaning of justice within America. Hold tight Girl America, redemption is coming
1. a liar, someone who knew he was not god yet deceived people into believing he was
2. a crazy person, someone who thought he was god but in reality was a mere man
3. or who he said he was, God in human form who came down to earth because man's state was so desperate and His love for us so great, that it required god himself to step out of heaven to restore the relationship we were always meant to have with him.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You've created a false dilemma, Triskal213 - Jesus also could have been a really nice, spiritual guy who people said was god (which, by the way, is a claim he never made), he could have never existed, not have been human, etc.
About the song- art should never mean the same thing to everybody who encounters it. It wouldn't be art. So you can't tell anybody what the song does or doesn't mean. Even the artist can't do that. He can tell you how he meant it but not what it means.
dogwiskers-"i just beleive in god and love him" and "well this song is completely demolished when u say its about god." hmmmm, sounds like a pretty intense love for god... who r u kidding?
cloverfieldix- "i believe in jesus...that he was a really smart man with morales, and thats it" How?
he claimed to be god. therefore if he was NOT god, like u say, then he is responsible for the biggest hoax in history! moral people dont do that.
i believe in jesus, i believe that he lived a relaly freaking long time ago, and that he was a really smart man with morales, and thats it
I doubt he was ressurected, i do believe that he killed by a spear and was nailed to the cross
but really, im 25 and i havent believed in god or any of that, and i make six figures a year, im happy, my wife is happy, my kids are happy, none of them believe in god, they believe in what they want to, and they're the happiest people
"Lay up not for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." -Matthew 7:19-21
"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" -Jesus, Matthew 16:26
I think it is about sacrifice. He is using the image of Jesus at the end to personify America and make the comparison that America has been working on freedom and so did Jesus.
After the Jesus description he sings: "My girl, out of this whole world
Can't you see this is where we started?"
I have a hard time seeing how this WHOLE song is about Jesus.
This song is unfortunately true in every aspect and word about America's youth in this day. Jesus can save you if your heart is open and you want him. nothing happens without Him. Money means nothing. Clothes, shoes, and girls in bed mean nothin. If you ask, you will Recieve.
Faith like a child from your first birth You left it in the dirt on your worst hurt And I see each tear and every scar The hands that have held you where you are And I can see we've strayed so far A king born under that morning star As a crown of thorns was placed to earase Each tear that's touched your face And his palms and sides were pierced with spears He hung in love just to draw you near My girl, out of this whole world Can't you see this is where we started?
i love this song! its so... RELEVANT! thats the word! relevant. i love it because it seems that every person can listen and say, "HEY THATS ME! I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THAT STUFF!" i love it!

"in god we trust engraved on the treasures of her nation"--that phrase is on our currency. etc etc. it's about how he's praying for this country because it's gotten itself into a bad situation..but that we shouldn't "stop believing."
basically, the whole song is a metaphor of sorts. i love it. =]
starsxgoxblue 2 years ago 65
OH yeah i see like even when he mentions 1776...
moizzy16 2 years ago
@starsxgoxblue i think it can easily be seen as both a metaphor for america itself and for a single girl in it. generation praying for reconsililation, magazine ads, sex, drama, smoking majauana. i think based on interpretation can be seen as just a normal girl in america being pressured by ideas of beauty and fitting in or be america the nation itself and it's place in the world.
Dougiestargirl0228 1 year ago 3
@starsxgoxblue THANK YOU!!! finaly, i've been trying to find a video of this song that isn't a bunch of pictures of girls, and i'm like, dose any one understand its about america??
MidgetMadness0 1 year ago
@starsxgoxblue That's only half the song, it's a metaphor in the sense that it stands for two things at once, It is a girl he's talking about, and the country in a hidden meaning.
kahy94 1 year ago
@starsxgoxblue right on man! I love how he speaks to those who listening! Blessings
howhelovesusall 1 year ago
@starsxgoxblue definitely about how girls are mistreated and oppressed in America when they can stand up and be something more instead of falling for all the lies. but seeing it for other things is cool too :D
rodanste 1 year ago
@starsxgoxblue i think its more like a metaphor talking bout the girl AND the country
Chidorispell 11 months ago
@starsxgoxblue Actually it's about both "Boys with hungry eyes have been beating her door
Telling her that's what she's for, trying to rob at her core
Then leave calling her a whore, but still she knows there's more"
"Smoking marijuana, longer for a father to call her, 'daughter'
She's part of a generation longing for reconciliation"
So while you're right in that it's a metaphor for America, Mat's still singing to individuals as well.

Always under pressure, always criticized, tied to past mistakes, etc

this song is amazing. the only rap song i've ever loved. it's so true. i'm a teenage girl trying to survive in this world. it's not easy even for someone who has enough faith to hold onto like i do. i see these people at school and all i see is emptiness. this guy i know is on probation for smoking pot...hooking up on weekends...all that stuff. it's sad what's happening to the youth in america.

Hold tight Girl America, redemption is coming

when it comes to Jesus, He can be 1 of 3 things
1. a liar, someone who knew he was not god yet deceived people into believing he was
2. a crazy person, someone who thought he was god but in reality was a mere man
3. or who he said he was, God in human form who came down to earth because man's state was so desperate and His love for us so great, that it required god himself to step out of heaven to restore the relationship we were always meant to have with him.
evidence points to the 3rd one

You've created a false dilemma, Triskal213 - Jesus also could have been a really nice, spiritual guy who people said was god (which, by the way, is a claim he never made), he could have never existed, not have been human, etc.
About the song- art should never mean the same thing to everybody who encounters it. It wouldn't be art. So you can't tell anybody what the song does or doesn't mean. Even the artist can't do that. He can tell you how he meant it but not what it means.

why are you guys talking about hey-seus... ? this is about girls.. not hey-seus.
hairybeast101 3 years ago
He's talking about a girl or girls who have faith in Jesus Christ. You know the bridge in this song is talking about Jesus himself right?
A king born under that morning star
A crown of thorns that was placed to erase each tear that touched your face.
His palms and sides were pierced with spears. He hung in love just to draw you near.
Doesn't that sound like Jesus to you?
iarechristopher 2 years ago 4
dogwiskers-"i just beleive in god and love him" and "well this song is completely demolished when u say its about god." hmmmm, sounds like a pretty intense love for god... who r u kidding?
cloverfieldix- "i believe in jesus...that he was a really smart man with morales, and thats it" How?
he claimed to be god. therefore if he was NOT god, like u say, then he is responsible for the biggest hoax in history! moral people dont do that.
Triskal213 3 years ago 2
okay
wow
first of all
i believe in jesus, i believe that he lived a relaly freaking long time ago, and that he was a really smart man with morales, and thats it
I doubt he was ressurected, i do believe that he killed by a spear and was nailed to the cross
but really, im 25 and i havent believed in god or any of that, and i make six figures a year, im happy, my wife is happy, my kids are happy, none of them believe in god, they believe in what they want to, and they're the happiest people

"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" -Jesus, Matthew 16:26

ok, i aggree to dissagree.
first of all, if Jesus was just a moral man.
why did he lie about being God then?
if he was so moral?

dogwiskers - what then does this line mean - "A king born under that morning star
As a crown of thorns was placed to earase
Each tear that's touched your face
And his palms and sides were pierced with spears
He hung in love just to draw you near"
That's Jesus, it can't mean anything else.
littlecary99 3 years ago
well this song is completely demolished when u say its about god
dogwiskers 3 years ago
