the pitches actually change depending on weather and distance, but usually its an A
/// there are two other pitches that happen less frequently an E above that and a C above that E, and if youre lucky, another pitch, maybe a tugboat is a g# above that
i went to sf and i went of the bridge and i was so confused to where that horn was coming from and to this day i still cant figure it out if it was a ghost ship or if the bridge has fog horns built into it so can someone tell me what i heard was because now that i know other people heard it im sure that its not a ghost ship but im still confused on what it is so can someone please tell me what the horn was please down thumbs down this comment because im really really really confused thanks :)
@Umpqua1012 Well spotted! You're right, I was using gentle sarcasm. Apologies if this threw anyone off the scent. At no point did I actually think it was down to ghostly activity. Next time I will include one of these ;-) to avoid confusion.
@misspdalbump Just do a google search on: "Where are the Golden Gate Bridge's Foghorns?" It should come up as your first offered link. Hope this helps!
@misspdalbump There are 4 foghorns on the bridge; 2 Leslie tyfons on the south tower; and two diaphones on the mid-span; and nothing on the north tower. The foghorns you hear in this video are the tyfons on the south tower.
I was out on the bridge in similar conditions...unbelievable experience. I couldn't figure out where the foghorn was coming from until I got off the bridge, the fog blew away, and I saw no ship in the bay.
Foghorns are a navigation aid for mariners. In foggy conditions, when visual navigation aids such as lighthouses are obscured by the weather, foghorns provide an audible warning of rocks, headlands, or other dangers to shipping.
the United States Navy has Foghorns on their battleships and Aircraft Carriers. they need these as loud as possible because an aircraft carrier was once hit by a small fishing boat dur the foghorns repair. the foghorns on aircraft carriers soud like tornado sirens. the can be herd for miles. the foghorns do not sound when in enmy territory because this may help the enmy find the aircraft carrier. that why th U.S. Navy needs foghorns.
Ghosts are REAL.
There are no such thing as Foghorns.

@misspdalbump It's clearly a ghost. How could you think it was anything else? Who ever heard of a horn that is sounded during foggy conditions?

@smackmiranda That's rubbish! I have seen those horns under that bridge with my own two eyes!

I'm from SF and used to fall asleep to the foghorn. I'm in GA now, and was feeling a little homesick. This made my evening. :) Thanks!

I did the same thing camping in the Bodega area. Very soothing listening and waiting for the next blast.
