Don't really know...only rumors...some believe she was but I don't really think so...she just like to use her "feminine wiles" and she used them on him!
@rafflip1313...don't know the name of the piece of music or the composer...sounds a bit like something Raul di Blasio would do...you might start with him...
You have to remember that the equipment is much improved today. The skates are sharper and lighter than back then. The skaters, both men and women, train more for the physical stamina necessary for the tricks of today. She is a wonder since she invented some of the moves that are the backbone of the programs of today.
I really like Ceceilia Colledge - she was a very elegant skater with lovely positions and her famous layback and camel spins - (she introduced those elements) -
i don't think she would remotely qualify against today's top skaters with her bent knees, unpointed toes, lack of speed and staccato transitions vs flow... No doubt she was the best during that time period, but certainly not by today's standards.
Look at some other clips - I agree her body position is not very pretty; but, that was standard for the time and she actually skated with incredible speed - look at "Fred Astair Presents" clip and you'll see she absolutely flew across the ice - and even though her jumps are singles compare the height and distance over the ice with her contemporaries. And her spins are AMAZING - incredibly fast, well centered. Bad posture, but again that was typical of the period
AND note her scores on the compulsories - 5.8 and 5.9 - school figure scores were almost never that high - from what I've heard and read she was a creep but a great athlete nevertheless - of course its all a matter of taste and subjective opinion
Sonja Henie is amazing!!! My family is greatly Norweigian and I am related to her on my mom's side. My great grandpa had skated with her before and he was 100% Norweigian! She is (was) the best.
you have to remember how long ago this was and how far skating has evolved. Sonia was so instrumental in the development of today's skating..from the length of women's skirts, the white skating boots and although what seems "ancient" to us now, the style of skating in particular! She was gorgeous as I am a testament to as I was lucky enough to get her autograph at a skating show shortly before she passed away. An incredible talent for sure!
Also I can imagine the skates must have been a big PAIN to wear because they almost reached to your knees, so it must have been harder to skate in those than the skates we have today which go a bit above the ankles. Once I had an aunt who wanted to give me a pair of her old ice skates ( circa 1940's), but when I saw them I had to politely tell her that I couldn't wear them because the boots would be knee high and hard to skate in.
Sonja was great, but she is a relic of another era, the great Vikings, but now on the road to extinction due the collapsed native birthrate in Norway and the influx of radical extremist Muslim Imans among the immigrant population. Sad, very sad.
Thanks .... by the way so many watched this video... how can you explain it? cause sonja passed away more than 40 years ago

If she was born in this period she would have smoked them all. She was skating like this in the 1930s
Can you understand what this means?
