It's not that bad for an automatic. Nobody buys an n/a 944 expecting a race car. My 2000 buick lesabre would walk away from old 944 in a straight line, but that thing was a blast to drive. I had an '86 5 speed, and it handled amazingly.
@xsalvioutlawx I'm sure I could have enjoyed it. Sold it a long time ago. I had a 1986 535i auto for 7 years which was primarily my wifes and we both enjoyed it. My daily is a 1998 TDi Beetle. No rush and the 45-49 mpg is nice!
I am looking at buying a 944 1988 and i was wondering what kind of problems i could encounter and should look for when viewing the vehicle, it has an automatic transmission and has done around 120,000 miles, i am looking at it for a first car and it saves me a few grand to get one in automatic in this condition.
@nocaca4u Im thinking about buying an auto in good condition its an 88, just how slow are they is all im worried about, is it a serious downside or something you can get over?
people who say there shit cars have never drove one, they werent just slapped together you know, they handle beautifully ive outrun mustangs, audis you name it just cuz of the handling alone, its untouchable, plus i have a 944s2.
@asnowsquall i like the 944 its a beautiful car in my opinion and its cheap to get now a days lmao i found one on vancouver craigslist for 5000$ and its in mint with like 190xxxkm which is alot but for a first car for me thats dam good lmao
@assphincter thats why it was the first car with front engine/rear tranny, 50/50 weight distribution, the fastest and most powerful 4cyl of its time and still an icon. I would have to say I agree with you.
If it looks like the mechanical work has been taken care of, such as the timing belt(very crucial that the timing belt gets replaced if not.)For that asking price, I would think that the mechanical work hasn't been very well kept up with.If you can though, try to get a look under the hood and under the car to see if the previous owner did something dumb or took it somewhere they did something dumb. First thing that went on me was the fuel pump, then the rack. And the used rubber hose as bushings
@KerryGetz1122 yea 80% are autos!! but u can get a aftermarket tranny and mod ur car to fit it and shit then u can make it a stick but id prefer a auto
Just sold this one yesterday for what I had into it, $1,350. Owned for 2 whole months. Guy that purchased it said its the damper plate for sure. I'm going to retore my other turd, a 1983 VW Rabbit diesel! LOL.

Who cares if it's auto, just enjoy the car. Not like you're going to be racing anyone with a 944 for anyways.
