While I think that Anja Silja (with Theo Adam)is the best recorded Senta, Varnay (with Hermann Uhde)is a very close second. And she (with Vinay) is my favorite Isolde.
It's kinda weird to think of, but actually, even though I love Varnay, I am not to fond of the phrasing here. Actually I prefer Sutherlands recording of this particular aria, even though I don't consider her a wagnerian soprano. I have just began working on the aria myself so I am fully aware how difficult it is to sing it.
I hesitate to criticise this clip unfairly, but I don't care too much for the phrasing. A mite too "stop-start" for me, and in any case too matronly a voice for the Senta. Not a patch on early Gywneth Jones recordings - you know, before the wobble took over altogether. Varnay in the early 1950s (with Hotter as the Wotan) could not be bettered as Brunnhilde, but Senta? No sir.
The Queen of Bayreuth for 16 years & the truely Kirsten Flagstad's spiritual daughter. A magnificent singer, a brilliant actress & a kind, generous woman. She was an asset to the World. She is sadly missed. May God protect her.
yes these are the right words about her God took her very close ti Him... I saw and heard her alive she was over 60, Isolde I heard Flagstad she is a Goddess but when alive sounded Varnay those heavenly archs and she was just prostrating in front of stage and i will never forget those moments

Astrid Varnay, in her autobiography -55 years in 5 acts- revels that she has difficulty with this role & was not particularly fond of it.
As for Brünnhilde, she was completely at home with it [& it shows..]

@nutty42 Does she say why she had difficulty with this role? It doesnt seem as extreme as Isolde or Brunnhilde.
