Kurt vs Joe? whats that all about, if it comes down to music yeah i prefer the clash to nirvana, but to compare two genius' like that is a disgrace, Joe would never want that nor Kurt. x
the person being interviewed later wrote a really great biography on joe strummer. if you have the opporotunity to read it, it is highy reccomended. it is called "Redemption Song: The Ballad Of Joe Strummer"
There is no comparison with Cobain, Strummer was so political. He brought so many important issues to the table. Very bright. I became aware of many issues in the 80's because of him.
wow, no one cares what they think, just show me more vids/pics of joe; and even when someone dies, instead talking about him, they are giving their on opinions which to me is another way of making money
I was riding over to the movie theatre at 10 AM on Dec 23 when I heard on the radio that he died. At that point, I never listened to the Clash, but I was aware of them, and my heart still sunk. Now, after almost 8 years since, Joe's music and the Clash's music are some of my all time favorites.
Just look at everyone's faces -- this was totally unexpected and devastating to many people who cared about music. It caught everyone by surprise. 50 is far too young.
damn you man!!! to find this video it take me few moths...but finally i got it..
why didnt you put more tag at the video?? like : joe strummer dead new...or something like that...you wrote just : joe strummer clash....how people can find this video?? anyway...joe strummer=genius
I had the blessing of saying hello to Joe, and as it turned out goodbye, in San Francisco on my birthday in 2004. He and I were both 1952 vintage Leos. I had met him briefly in 1978 as well and seen all the Clash shows here-abouts.
The snarly punk had been superceded by the big-hearted poet in the intervening years. I love and admire him always.
You are right, my dear. I turned 50 that day in 2002. I write my comments late at night (and I'm over fifty) and I had the wrong year. This was at Amoeba records in San Francisco July 28, 2002. I'm sure yr records will bear that out.
Wouldn't make it up, honest. And I have Clash and 101ers 45s he signed and a photograph of him also signed. I gave him a copy too and we discussed his piece on "kicks, joy, darkness."
You are going to think I'm really thick, I suspect...first meeting with Joe was in early 1979 not 1978. Paul, Joe and a big lug who was their road manager came to Tower records Berkeley. Their first US gig was that night. I missed the gig next night in SF.
After that I saw them at Kezar Stadium SF, 1979. Then both nights at the Warfield SF, 1980. And lastly at SF Civic Auditorium, 1981?.
Many who lived through that era don't remember details as well as those who study it now do.
Too many people focus on Kurt..yea its sad but everyone forgets the others that REALLY mattered like Joe Strummer and even Ian Curtis from Joy Division
@StreetFight23 I disagree. Kurt and Joe were both fighters of freedom, both were punk, both had a message. Just becuase he was older doesn't mean he wasn't Superior to Kurt. But I do think he was superior to kurt.
& can definitely say my attitude to life & the world was hugely influenced by listening to their music/lyrics & kinda always made me think "take care out there" & he was so right! x
Didn't find out about the history of Joe Strummer (as well as Mick, Paul, Topper and everyone else of a scene) until 1994 and have tried ever since have tried to understand my humanity, our humanity and the aspects of it and try to improve our human condition in some way....
thanks for everything joe

Yes. That is a fantastic book, one of the best I've read about him. Also one of the few books that literally brought me to tears.

@adamcarp Kurt could pick notes. Strummer only strummed. Guitar wise, Kurt was better. Punk wise, Strummer all the way.
