sorry to comment again but Puzzle N3 i have another solution see if it's correct please i'm just a beginner ! Ne2, Kh1, Ng3 both pons can't take one is pindown and the other is a mate in one ! after that Kg1, Nxf1 if the king takes : Kxf1, Qd1 mate ! and if the king doesnt take : Kh1than it's Qh2 mate !
Puzzle N1 i have another solution see if it's correct please i'm just a beginner ! Kh6, Qxh6 , Qd8 ! the king must move a Pon to get space ! so g6 than it's Rf8 and king run away g7and finally Rg8 CheckMate
5/5 I find the most difficult and beautiful puzzles are those that involve quiet moves where no check is given or piece captured. I also find they help the most in practical chess where there aren't always beautifully forcing tactics.
Everyone who says they are easy should say they are easy for people who have studied tactics. couple of them are famous checkmate motifs. Anything is easy once you have learned it. These are certainly not easy for the beginning player. Don't think it helps to tell everyone they are easy. The beginner will say, "Well shoot, if these are easy then I guess I'm not cut out for chess they are impossible. They are easy if you have done your homework and studied tactics. Great job Jerry!
those were good!! 5 threw me... i got the right move but didnt think to turn it into a horse, of course :-) haha! thanks for posting these. LOVE the music!
I couldn't pause. I didn't have the heart to stop the beautiful music =) Still I had enough time to find the checkmates but that's because I'm familiar with back rank weaknesses, smothered mates and that sneaky trap in Phildor's defense. The 3rd one is a pretty common queen sac. I liked the last one the most. Nice puzzles for beginners I think :)
5/5. legals mate, smothered mate themes, underpromotion/doublecheck, anastasia's mate, back rank mate, maybe not in that order. amazing what doing a little reading, solving a few puzzles can do for person's chess visualization skills. who would have thought.
Hey, thanks so much for taking your time out to make these videos. I got all 5 of these puzzles right, and they really got my brain going. Great stuff!
Great videos to help get me thinking. Not obvious at first but then I'm not the sharpest tool in the box. Do you think It's a question of 'you either have the talent for chess or you don't'?
#1: white is one move away from mate, so either queentrade or check. Trading queens doesn't get you anywhere. Only N-h6+ makes sense.
#2: white can do a double check, forcing the king to move to a1. Smothered mate.
#3: requires some creativity, but since white can check you, every move you make should be check. N-e2+ is the most forcing move and was an obvious lead to start investigating.
I love puzzles. But why was the first the toughest? Funny how you see the under-promotion in an instant when you're told it's mate in one. I recommend The Art of Checkmate by Georges Renaud as a good starter for anyone wanting to learn more about mating tactics.
Instead of queen to H2, black can move the knight again from E2 to G3. The white H pawn cannot capture due to the queen, and if the white F pawn captures the black rook slides down capturing the white rook for mate. If the king slides back to G1, the black bishop can capture the white F pawn, forcing the rook to take. The queen then slides to D1, forcing the rook back to block the check. Capture with either the queen or rook for mate.
Nice - just the kind of thing I was looking for. You are brave to play online - I'm just a wood-pusher on a good day, a Patzer on a slightly better one!
4/5 not bad for me. The truth is though the only reason I got these is because I was looking for them. In a real game setting good luck with any of this, though I suppose these patterns are good to look for.
@TisforTaco Having worked out the pawn will move, which you did, the only escape square for the king is c7, which would be covered by a knight. The bishop is the only piece that isn't a knight that can check the king, but that can be taken by the rook. So you need a piece that's going to protect the bishop and cover c7. A knight promotion achieves the former by adding a second check, forcing a king move, and the latter by being a knight :) No great secrets when you know the tricks
Wow ure videos are great. Since I made 5 out of 5 I felt obliged to leave a bragging comment ;).
The first one was a little tricky. But still not too many possibilities to be considered.
The other checkmates are so famous that they even got a name (except for the last one). I love anastacias mate (with Knight and rook working together) and smothered mate :).
Thought i solved the fifth by promoting to a Queen and unpaused right away but when came the solution I saw that the King still had the c7 option to escape.
i had got 5/5. 1, and 5 were a little tricky, but just as a suggestion, you should leave more attacking options, to confuse people (such as having a queen on the board you aren't supposed to use, or perhaps having 2 rooks, but only 1 rook and a pawn/bishop/knight would work or w/e).regardless though, i love puzzles like these. great way to keep people on edge and thinking. =D
very cool puzzles, the hardest ones were definitely #1 and 5, I'd have probably thought forever if I didn't sneak a look at the last one, very sneaky, not many people would consider that move =)
@darthvaderyoda A hint : the moves you must look must be "force" moves. Means, look for moves that forces the oppnent king, or other nearby pieces to move only in a way we want.
Since the problem already tells how many moves you should mate, u get a general idea. in last problem, mate in 1. make king immovable. try closest pieces to king. here knight and pawn. knight doesnt work. so pawn. but pawn can only move 1 more square=promotion + discovered check= king MUST move. promote to knight.
You used a smothered mate, Anastasia's mate, and Legal's mate. Not to say that the mates aren't beautiful (Legal's is my favorite), but they are good staples for people just learning to play the game.

Pretty spicy but i got em all. The last 2 puzzles were easy because there r just so few possibilities. The 1st puzzle was the most difficult . Then it's just a matter of finding the sneeky rooksacrifice.

Alternative forced mate on puzzle #3:
Instead of queen to H2, black can move the knight again from E2 to G3. The white H pawn cannot capture due to the queen, and if the white F pawn captures the black rook slides down capturing the white rook for mate. If the king slides back to G1, the black bishop can capture the white F pawn, forcing the rook to take. The queen then slides to D1, forcing the rook back to block the check. Capture with either the queen or rook for mate.
