  • These are beginner level puzzles. Anyone who didn't get all 5 should feel very average.

  • sorry to comment again but Puzzle N3 i have another solution see if it's correct please i'm just a beginner ! Ne2, Kh1, Ng3 both pons can't take one is pindown and the other is a mate in one ! after that Kg1, Nxf1 if the king takes : Kxf1, Qd1 mate ! and if the king doesnt take : Kh1than it's Qh2 mate !

  • Puzzle N1 i have another solution see if it's correct please i'm just a beginner ! Kh6, Qxh6 , Qd8 ! the king must move a Pon to get space ! so g6 than it's Rf8 and king run away g7and finally Rg8 CheckMate

  • All of you guys spoiled number five for me.

  • Got all but one

  • 5/5

  • 4/5 didn't get the 3rd one :)

  • 5/5

  • the last one tricked me lol. 4/5. completely forgot you can do that.

  • 5/5 I find the most difficult and beautiful puzzles are those that involve quiet moves where no check is given or piece captured. I also find they help the most in practical chess where there aren't always beautifully forcing tactics.

  • 5/5 faciles todos

  • 4/5 as well, I've never promoted a pawn to a knight in all my games playing chess!!

  • @zorbeypiano Congrats! :)

  • THE LAST PUZZLE WAS AWESOME !!! most people(including me ) only think of promoting a pawn to queen...nice

  • @sigaret69 :) tricky...

  • 4v5, got the first move of the 3rd one, but couldnt see the queen sac

  • 3/5

  • 4/5.... the one with the knight check follwed by a Queen Sacrifice with a mate delivered by the Rook was difficult to spot.

  • i like the last one

  • one out of five... ouch! : )

  • the bgm does makes ppl feel nervous.. haha...

  • Didn't think of the promotion to Knight on the last one. Very interesting puzzles.

  • Everyone who says they are easy should say they are easy for people who have studied tactics. couple of them are famous checkmate motifs. Anything is easy once you have learned it. These are certainly not easy for the beginning player. Don't think it helps to tell everyone they are easy. The beginner will say, "Well shoot, if these are easy then I guess I'm not cut out for chess they are impossible. They are easy if you have done your homework and studied tactics. Great job Jerry!

  • all but the first...i thought i have to do 3 moves with the whites and rly could find anything :P pretty nice puzzles^^

  • I got the 4th and the Fifth one Correctly nice puzzles though!

  • Those were the ones i got right too. Recognized the themes in the first three, but couldn't put together the moves.

  • those were good!! 5 threw me... i got the right move but didnt think to turn it into a horse, of course :-) haha! thanks for posting these. LOVE the music!

  • Awesome puzzles, the most problematic was riddle 1, other were pretty easy :)

  • Comment removed

  • Good video! They were easy, but helpful to those of us who don't play chess often :)

  • These were easy, good video.I done all without any problem.

  • MUSIC....Can you tell me the Name please ????

  • @shaktimaan09 Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, as in this video: UHd8jwXBzXE

  • @Auliliae Thanks a lot....

  • @Auliliae thanks...its beautiful.

  • i got all but number 2 didn't see the queen sacrifice. number 5 was the best because it premoted to a knight that was great.

  • I solved all of them except #1!

  • Haha Number 4 is the legal trap, isn't it? ;D

  • @mateklQ Yes!

  • Demasiado fáciles

  • i have 5/5 the last was very easy

  • 5/5 I've seen all but the last one I think. Great puzzles!

  • no.5 is the coolest

  • 5/5 #4 has happened to me before. I was infuriated. haha.

  • very nice video, enjoyed it :)

the 4th puzzle is from a well known game and I had no difficulties

the 5th - I have seen the Saavedra position, so always keeping my eyes open for such possibilities

the 1st - no trouble either

the smothered mate was the only one i could not solve by myself

    \/

  • to be honest i managed to answer 4/5..the song is awsome :):)

  • 2/5 Only the last 2.

  • 4/5 missed the first one ;)

  • I couldn't pause. I didn't have the heart to stop the beautiful music =) Still I had enough time to find the checkmates but that's because I'm familiar with back rank weaknesses, smothered mates and that sneaky trap in Phildor's defense. The 3rd one is a pretty common queen sac. I liked the last one the most. Nice puzzles for beginners I think :)

  • i got them all, no cheating. and too easy for me, i can see even 7 advance moves of my opponent in mind. ^^ im just good.

  • i got them all, no cheating. and too easy for me, i can see even 7 advance moves of my opponent in mind. ^^ im just good.

  • in 3 puzzle are better checkmate, than here show

  • I dont get it all, can someone help me with chass?

  • yay 5/5 :D

  • 2/5, I'm ok :P

  • 5/5. legals mate, smothered mate themes, underpromotion/doublecheck, anastasia's mate, back rank mate, maybe not in that order. amazing what doing a little reading, solving a few puzzles can do for person's chess visualization skills. who would have thought.

  • 4/5 xD

  • Hey, thanks so much for taking your time out to make these videos. I got all 5 of these puzzles right, and they really got my brain going. Great stuff!

  • I love promotions, where the pawn promotes to a knight to deliver a checkmate!

  • Nothing like listening to Moonlight Sonata while checkmating the opponent.

  • I got 5/5 although on the 3rd puzzle I didn't see it was black to move and spent about 5mins trying to come up with a mate combo against black haha

  • Great videos to help get me thinking. Not obvious at first but then I'm not the sharpest tool in the box. Do you think It's a question of 'you either have the talent for chess or you don't'?

  • My train of thoughts for these:

#1: white is one move away from mate, so either queentrade or check. Trading queens doesn't get you anywhere. Only N-h6+ makes sense.

#2: white can do a double check, forcing the king to move to a1. Smothered mate.

#3: requires some creativity, but since white can check you, every move you make should be check. N-e2+ is the most forcing move and was an obvious lead to start investigating.

    #4: known opening trap

#5: king can't move, double check.

  • i lost the last move. I wouldve promoted a queen, a big mistake for me

  • I liked the music a lot, thank you. But the puzzles themselves are classic examples, so as the music, so I think you've done a good job ;)

  • lol i spent my time finding the longer mate on puzzle 3: 1..Ne2+ 2.Kh1 Ng3+! 3.Kg1 (3. fxg3 Rxf1#) Bxf2+ 4. Rxf2 Qd1+ 5.Rf1 Qxf1#

  • @KillaNinja0 haha, I got that mate in 5 as well. It was easier to find than the solution, at least for me it was.

  • 3 out of 5

  • Last puzzle was definitely thinking outside the box. Loved it!

  • Very cool

  • I got 5 out of 5. Great videos!

  • Awesome puzzles, and the classical music makes me feel smrat.

  • hum i got three out of the five i know it has to do with promoting the pawn but i didn't think of promoting it to a horse on the very last one

  • I love puzzles. But why was the first the toughest? Funny how you see the under-promotion in an instant when you're told it's mate in one. I recommend The Art of Checkmate by Georges Renaud as a good starter for anyone wanting to learn more about mating tactics.

  • I got 4/5 . Don't get me wrong I got the 5th one. :D

  • great video!

  • In the second puzzle, Night to B5 works just as well.

  • @VitalSigns1 It needs to be a double check, otherwise Qe5 delays for a move.

  • Thank you for sharing ^^ i learend alot even from these few puzzles.

  • fun!

  • Alternative forced mate on puzzle #3:

Instead of queen to H2, black can move the knight again from E2 to G3. The white H pawn cannot capture due to the queen, and if the white F pawn captures the black rook slides down capturing the white rook for mate. If the king slides back to G1, the black bishop can capture the white F pawn, forcing the rook to take. The queen then slides to D1, forcing the rook back to block the check. Capture with either the queen or rook for mate.

  • i gt them all at first glance..my rating is 2443 tats why

  • @knife071 bullshit!

  • @VitalSigns1 seriously..the 1st one was the only one that got me thinking a bit..swear

  • @knife071 Really? I thought the first one was easier than the second one.

  • @VitalSigns1 tats bcoz ive done that puzzle b4

  • Nice - just the kind of thing I was looking for. You are brave to play online - I'm just a wood-pusher on a good day, a Patzer on a slightly better one!

Thanks - I'll subscribe to this one.

  • 4/5 yay

  • 4/5 not bad for me. The truth is though the only reason I got these is because I was looking for them. In a real game setting good luck with any of this, though I suppose these patterns are good to look for.

  • the last one had me laughin. i could only figure it was a pawn promotion but my mind was set that it had to promote to a queen. that's brilliant.

  • @TisforTaco Having worked out the pawn will move, which you did, the only escape square for the king is c7, which would be covered by a knight. The bishop is the only piece that isn't a knight that can check the king, but that can be taken by the rook. So you need a piece that's going to protect the bishop and cover c7. A knight promotion achieves the former by adding a second check, forcing a king move, and the latter by being a knight :) No great secrets when you know the tricks

  • Wow ure videos are great. Since I made 5 out of 5 I felt obliged to leave a bragging comment ;).

The first one was a little tricky. But still not too many possibilities to be considered.

The other checkmates are so famous that they even got a name (except for the last one). I love anastacias mate (with Knight and rook working together) and smothered mate :).

  • 4/5

Thought i solved the fifth by promoting to a Queen and unpaused right away but when came the solution I saw that the King still had the c7 option to escape.

    Nice puzzles. :)

  • moonlight sonata!!

  • Third one was the only one I had to cheat with :P

  • i had got 5/5. 1, and 5 were a little tricky, but just as a suggestion, you should leave more attacking options, to confuse people (such as having a queen on the board you aren't supposed to use, or perhaps having 2 rooks, but only 1 rook and a pawn/bishop/knight would work or w/e).regardless though, i love puzzles like these. great way to keep people on edge and thinking. =D

  • nice problems. Pls leave a little more time to pause the video before you move the first piece in the solution, though (after the text is gone).

  • very cool puzzles, the hardest ones were definitely #1 and 5, I'd have probably thought forever if I didn't sneak a look at the last one, very sneaky, not many people would consider that move =)

  • only got the fourth one the other four was hard. Can't believe number five was so easy. Kudos

  • i only got 1.

Are they anyways to easily figure out a mate in 2,3,4, etc. prooblem?

I can n ever figure out what move the computer is gonna play

  • @darthvaderyoda A hint : the moves you must look must be "force" moves. Means, look for moves that forces the oppnent king, or other nearby pieces to move only in a way we want.

Since the problem already tells how many moves you should mate, u get a general idea. in last problem, mate in 1. make king immovable. try closest pieces to king. here knight and pawn. knight doesnt work. so pawn. but pawn can only move 1 more square=promotion + discovered check= king MUST move. promote to knight.

  • wow jerry these were hard but 1 got the last 1 i am 5 though

  • the last 1 i wuldve never thought of that cuz i wuldve usualy brought bak my queen

  • I got 3/5. Man I suck.

  • i didn no u could make dat horse on da promo nigga

  • hey, are you the one playing as chessnetwork on chesscube?

  • @kotofu As "Chess_Network" yes.

  • very talant

  • you can get check mate in 2 moves H6 F8

  • I goy 4/5.

  • I got 5 out of 5 :)

and I subscribed you Jerry ^_^

    Awsome puzzels!

  • You used a smothered mate, Anastasia's mate, and Legal's mate. Not to say that the mates aren't beautiful (Legal's is my favorite), but they are good staples for people just learning to play the game.

  • thnx , i've seen all of them before but the last one was new & amazing

  • I got 1 and 3 in a different way but still in 3 moves.

  • I htink I got 3 out of 5. I love these puzzles. That last one was cool. I got it. :D

    Benson and Tonic

    myspace/bensonandtonicproductions

  • l got it all... l used and tried all before but useful for beginners Thanks

  • neat little exercise i saw all of them the queen sac was epic

  • Thnx I have learned something.

  • Very nice, I yhink i have learned something from it. YNX :) Please send a vid message back. THNX

  • 5/5

  • I got all of them :), and I know where the 4th one is taken from :O!

  • Nice puzzles, i didnt get the last one, so 4/5 ..

    On puzzle 3, I found a second mate. Its not a mate in 5, but a mate in 8 .. Ne2+ Kh8 Ng3+ ...

    .. if fxg3 then Rxf1 mate

    .. if Kg8, then Bb6xf2+ Rxf2 Qd1 Rf1 Qxf1 mate

  • managed to complete them quite well. good puzzles! :)

  • Nice compilation and I love the music.

I got all 5 pretty quick; they were mostly standard themes, but well selected to show the power of the knight in mating combinations.

  • 4/5, missing the first one. the knight check that was played seemed best, but i didn't find the rook sac. very nice puzzle.

actually i'd seen the 2nd and 4th puzzles before, so i really got 2/3 :P

    great video.

  • Wow those were great=]

  • i thought the second was a little hard but i like the challage thanks keep them coming

  • is this music chopin?

  • Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

  • thanks, i just knew it sounded familiar. In fact I've listend to the moonlight sonata a couple of times in the last couple of weeks :-) should have known!

  • see end

  • the explenations are well thought out .

    i enjoyd them all.

    thank you .

  • @2002Newway Thank you...this is your first comment to my videos I think. I look forward to more from you in the future. =)

  • Pretty spicy but i got em all. The last 2 puzzles were easy because there r just so few possibilities. The 1st puzzle was the most difficult . The matetreath from the black queen in the first puzzle made it however very clear the first move had to be either a check or a move that removed that treath. Then it's just a matter of finding the sneeky rooksacrifice.

  • @bluband2 Congrats on 5/5. =)

  • Only got the last four

  • @Anwiso 4/5 is good! =)

  • I can't believe that I failed in the last. So much for Queen fixation.

  • Others have overlooked such. Don't feel bad. =)

  • 1 out of 5 i got the last 1 ;))))))

  • Practice makes almost perfect. =)

  • hey chessnetwork

  • Hey

  • 5/5 because I have similar mating patterns engraved in my brain, except for the knight promotion, but that was obvious.

  • Congrats! =)

  • #4 = legal trap.

  • @elsalfo Yes, you're right! =)

  • Wow that was 42 minutes ago!? Time flies watching your videos.

PS: What site do you use to play chess?

  • @elsalfo Depends on my mood. I'll be posting live blitz soon enough so you'll see.

  • well, why would it be illegal?

  • Why would what be illegal?

  • 4/5 Solved, the last one had me because I forgot the posibility of converting pawn to knight! Good Job!

  • 4/5 is good! Thanks for the comment. =)

  • 4.5/5, jajjaa because in the third one i find a solution but not mate in three. it was in five :

    1.- Qa8,Ne2+ 2.- Kh1,Ng3+ 3.-Kg1,Axf2+ 4.-Rxf2,Qd1+ 5.-Rf1,Qxf1++

what do you think? 4.5/5? :D

  • 4/5 and 5/5. 4/5 in success rate of solving the puzzles, 5/5 for the puzzles ^^

  • Congrats! Thanks for the comment. =)

  • lmao this was cool especially the pawn promo! haha

  • Glad you liked. =)

  • Awesome puzzles. I'm a few miles ahead of them though. Still, the design of the puzzles was great. BTW, nice music

  • Thanks.

  • Rofl I sucked got first one =P

  • That's a start! =)

  • last one is brilliant. so that's why there're choices other than queen! :)

  • Glad you liked. =)

  • hey, sorry for the beginnerish question but..

..when a pawn moves to the end square, it can turn into any piece? not just a queen?

  • any

  • hehe i loved the last one becoz it teaches us that you dont have to upgrade your pawn to a queen other pieces can help too in some instances like this thanks.

  • Thanks for the comment!

Yes, be aware of under promotion! =)

  • pretty good is no. 4 oh my a tremendous trap!!!!

  • Thanks for the feedback. =)

  • pretty easy puzzles, but #4 is my fav. Legal checkmates are the best.

  • Thanks for the feedback. =)

  • favorite it cuz it's playing the moonlight sonata XD

  • Glad you enjoy the music! =)

  • 5/5

Number 3 took me a second... don't know why.

  • Congrats on the 5/5. =)

  • What is this song again?

  • The names of the songs are shown at the end of the video.

  • YEAH! Managed to solve them all! =) Nice puzzles, thanks so much for sharing!

By the way, in puzzle 4, what was the name of that line?

  • Congrats on solving them all. I'm forgetting the name of that line. Thanks for the comment.

  • I solved everyone except for number 3.

  • Congrats! 4/5 is good. =)
