He did a similar bit at the OC Fair this year (2009), right before going into this song. It was actually a little bit more funny there. He went up to a woman, saying he was there for her, to see her face, and that he knew that the guy next to her was her man, and how did he know? He saw his hand go to her leg and start rubbing. He, I know exactly what that means, that she's yours. And he said, he respects that but then quickly turned back to the woman, "So, anyway," and continued hitting on her.
I saw Smokey perform this summer (2008) at the Greek Theatre in LA. I was so thrilled that he sang this song, because it my favorite of all his music. I think the lyrics and melody are so pure and insightful and his phrasing is flawless. What a treat it was to see and hear him perform! It's really stayed with me.
