  • The only bad thing I have to say about this video is the soloist's first note. It's simply an awful note on the horn, and he was a bit sharp. The passion and musicality, however, was top notch.

  • Lol, they took the key to an easier key...BOOOO

  • Turandot. Oh yeah!

  • Phantom Regiment 2012- Turandot

    SUTA

  • @KH2fanatic2010 foreal? o.o

  • @zeron8195 yup this is their opener next year

  • @KH2fanatic2010 If anything, I think they're doing it to spite JD, since he and Paul went to SCV.

  • Wow! Chills ran up my spine at the last part of the solo!

  • Hey, I've ridden in a car with that guy!

  • Mello solo sounds flat compared to the 91 version. Also, the whole thing feels "forced" as though they just don't go that extra step volume wise. Seems like they get so loud and that is "loud" for the whole piece. While well in tune it sounds too "mechanical" as if they are going through the motion of playing music.

  • @mellosrock Are you okay?

  • @phantomtrumpet92 Absolutely. Technically brilliant, musically flat.

  • @phantomtrumpet92 Yep. Are you?

  • @mellosrock They were also on Bflat horns. Which have a darker sound than the 91 bugles. Odds are, this camera is better than the one used in 91 as well, which means a clearer sound.

  • @AnimalChick1995 Ew, you're ugly.

Making uninformed, asinine judgments is so easy!

  • @AnimalChick1995 Please tell us tales about how much better your high school can do this.

  • They should re-thaw Pavoratti-he loved this. I say RE- because i think he was already dead when the Turin Olympics came around. If he wasn't already dead, and his voice gone-the weather at the opening would have killed both.

  • Sure sounds different on Bb/F vs G.

  • @mellosrock AMEN! Everything sounds flatter and darker on band instruments. And that's what they are. Band instruments.

  • @buckeyeba And dark is bad?

  • @apachedann1 This isn't Helena Bonham Carter; it's DCI. Dark isn't "in."

  • @buckeyeba

I know I'm spoiled because of never playing G bugles, but to me I feel like the thin sounds they made seem kinda cheesy. And there were so many more balancing issues as well

  • @buckeyeba I guess it depends on the music you like. Personally I like hearing corps play dark music, e.g. 1995+1996 Phantom, 2010 Crown, SCV's ballad in 2000, and I think the darker sound helps when they play dark music. I'm not saying that I like dark music only of course. Listening to pre-2000's recordings, it sounded like there were more tuning problems on G bugles, though they were louder than Bb (usually). I'm fine with both Bb and G instruments really, just as long as they're played well.

  • @buckeyeba LOL

  • holy mother of god what a cut off!!

  • i cried. i really did.

  • sorry there is no mellophone nor trumpets in drum & bugle corps. only bugles are allowed. there's the soprano bugle, flugels, baritone bugle, and bass bugle. the fingering is the same, the difference is bugle's are made with bigger bell for sound volume since they were originally used in war's when the band went in weapon/sheildless before the actual troop's to clear non military innocent citizen's off the soon to be battle area. i miss my days with dave at phantom. it seem's like forever ago.

  • @roxicon yes there is all corps use Bb trumpets and F mellos

  • @roxicon Bugles are also in G, but DCI made the switch to Bb instruments a few years ago. I'm with you though.. I still refer to everything by the old names.

  • wait... why is the solo play'd by a mellophone?? def a euph solo. Nice encore by the way

  • 6 People dont have soles.

  • @spazirandeh Or souls.

  • @SpedunkTV man i feel like a fucking idiot... thanks for the correction though.

  • @spazirandeh Haha yep. :D

  • This is how it really goes ... ht t p:// w ww.youtube.com/watch?v=WUKbbTbeJBg&feature=related

  • 6 people are still butthurt about Spartacus. :)

  • Al'alba vincero.....Vincero!....VINCERO!!!!

    Puccini is the best

And Phantom Reg is always awesome

  • God. That's a beautiful thing.

    Goosebumps.

  • beautiful tone quality from the soloist! a great musician

  • i love j.d. shaw! he's so good in boston brass

  • Sorry, that is very deffinately a mello....mello for the win!

  • Actually I dont think this is a mello playing it. Mellos sound more like a horn as where this sounds like a trumpet, but fuller and deeper. Its definitely a fluge. I know this because alot of drum corps soloist use fluges as apposed to trumpets or mellos. And I also know because i play fluge. I play it 7 days a week. I know what it sounds like.

  • @euphoniumification

find me a flugel with that size bell...

  • @djduran Yeah, I was thinking about the bell size. Its a mello, however if you want a fluge with that large of a bell I can probably find one.

  • wuhhhhh ajibb

  • this is in a different key then it was in, in '91

  • @trptsrule the key was changed to compensate for the switch between G Bugles and Bb/F marching brass. In this case, it was changed to keep the mello fingerings the same *gotta love JD Shaw's arranging!*

@pdoellin Parker, you're a beast of a player, and I'm always thrilled to hear your stuff.

  • @guitarmansegovia ohh ok, thanks! that makes sense

  • I wouldn't be worried about the future of the DC community if I were you.

They've got plenty of dumbasses already.

  • 10/10 tubas

  • I like how intense the chords are..... My band director in elementary school always would joke about how some chords were more intense than they were meant to be when we were just learning about accindentals and enharmonics, good times *sigh*

  • I would like to here the solo as a baritone part....it sounded weird having it in a higher instrument. Don't get me wrong it was amazingly played. That's just me though.

  • I hear it, it souds too sharp with a mello, too precise or something.

  • Hmmm, at first I was like you're crazy but you're right. It's more of a Baritone sounding solo.

  • @oyenz2 It's definitely suppose to be baritone, but I have no clue why that had it in higher trumpet.

  • Control - Power - Precision... Sound to Silence at 2:17 and 2:24 is SICK... GOD I LOVE IT SO...

  • Wow umm...That's that there 1990's "carpet turf"...gay...lol sorry but i was watching parkers solo and look over at a contras foot and was like....wheres the grass..........

  • what instrument was the soloist playing? sounds like a trumpet... Flugelhorn?

  • By the bell it looks like a mello.

  • Too bad this isn't a marching band. GTFO

  • yes. gtfo please

  • Wow. 6 dumbasses who didn't bother to check on who I was replying to. People on Youtube can be so god-damned stupid sometimes...

It almost makes me worry about the future of the DCI community.

  • Oh wow... I remember them playing elsas for us that year and still nothing compares to there sound it's amazing!

  • My band plays Dorma this year for our halftime show. Love it.

  • J.D. shaw he teaches at my school now freakin awesome

  • Phantom Voices was an excellent show (sans a certain provocative guard move :P) JD Shaw, Smiley, and Ray Vasquez are BEASTS!

  • awsome solo

  • PHANTOM REGIMENT

always in the classical music and I am grateful. I have used videos to teach my paino students so that they can hear the pieces in another venue. Thank you and good luck in 2010!!!!!!

  • NESSUN DORMA OMG!!! YESS!

  • Vincero

  • Such a clean cutoff. i think my ears are bleeding.

  • parker, i don't think i can EVER get enough of this solo!

  • sounds great!

  • I love how they play the 1 5, then punch you in the face with the 3rd... amazing.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

  • This video was actually recorded in Menomonie, WI, by me, but I was forced to take it down that summer due to a copy right claim. Glad to see it online again. Nice solo, Parker (both years!).

  • very very very nice!

  • This kid is good. Really, he is. Nice job Mr. Doelling on both solos, this solo and Spartacus.

  • OMG GO PARKER!

  • Mello soloist was amazing every time I watched Spartacus... such a beast!

  • nah... trumpet solo all the way... 8VA

  • It could be arranged for any instrument. BUT, Mr. Parker is an amazing horn player, so it works. :)

  • Excellent solo. It made this pit captain pick up a mello, if nothing else than just to play this. Thank you. :)

  • "On Air" gave me chills

  • definitely one of my favorite phantom shows ever

  • has he aged out?

  • dude

  • parker, you are definately the best mello player I've ever heard. Phantom Voices gives me chills every time I listen, and so does this.

Can't wait for november to audition!!!

  • the soloist is GAY......hahaha jk parker haha, i randomly came across this video and it seems like you uploaded it, so yea dude, sounds badass

  • i'm an intense cavaliers fan myself, but i've always admired and loved phantom's musicality and choice of pieces. the classical nature of many of their shows and pieces is just amazing.

  • haha yes, we're twins!

  • someone asked me that in the form of a comment on a video someone ripped off your page. i think it was the rip of the running hornline during "airplanes".

  • Is Parker any relation to the snare player, Dustin?

  • Wow! Amazing work! Amazing sound! Amazing score!

  • I personally as a contra player it is a Bitch to carry just standing there it is so much better when u are moving around so that is my side so dont get mad at them unless u do play contra so blahhhhh and no i dont play contra for any big marching bands i play contra for a simple HS marching band and we do have long shows so yea i know how it feels i just want to sit and rest lol so yea go contra players :D

  • Isn't this 2006? 2007 they had the blue sash thing across the uniform for on air.

  • early season before they got the new blue feathered baldricks and gauntlets.

  • RainMan137 - of course the CONTRAS should be sitting, they have to carry the rest of the horn line all the time (previous contra player with Lambertville Volunteers - Sr. corps 1963 to 1966 & 1968

    DeltaGrunt

  • and this is more than likely an encore song after a show. so yeah. why not sit

  • That last chord brings alot of goosebumps and makes you wanna cry at the same time.

  • Ditto- BEAUTIFUL! I still have goosebumps from that last chord...

  • BEAUTIFULL

  • This song puts me to tears.

    It's so moving.

    Phantom is so amazing.

    I love them.

  • sitting Contras?? rediculous release!

  • AWESOME!!! My Favorite Aria of all time. Maestro Pavarotti would have been impressed!!! God Bless!

  • I just started playing this piece for concert band, and I have a new appreciation for it now. This is absolutely amazing.

  • This song is friggin amazing! I love it, and Phantom!

  • kudos to phantom for always having a top 3 corps in terms of musicality, effect, and choice of pieces. the classical tradition in the corps is something that is a pleasure to watch/hear.

  • omg this looks creepy :P

  • Kudos to Parker Deolling for this, and for Spartacus this year. That was one amazing solo to listen to live. My favorite overall.

  • just make you wanna cry.lovely sound.

  • holy crap listen to that cut off !

  • Is the full 91 show posted anywhere????

  • go to myspace.the full show is there for sure.i have it on myspace.

  • This song is actually for a tenor voice SKfabs. It's cool but not as beautiful as when sang.

  • oooooh thanks.

  • This song was made for this corps

  • Seriously

  • I played this in symphonic band last semester. I absolutely adore this version!

  • '91 was the awsome show, they went a little jazzie and a little naughty dirty at the end!! you need to see the complete show to see what I mean!!!!

  • you mean the open leg with the guard underneath, loved it!!

  • I saw Phantom's "Spartacus" at ISU this past friday as a part of the Drum Major Academy. I thought they were the best Corps at the show.

  • i got rocked by phantom's "spartacus" show at the stillwater, mn drum beauty show last night. sickest thing i've ever seen. wow.

  • good job i played this in concert band this last year and i enjoyed it, very short but i like how it sounds

  • ooo, chills<3

  • Amazing

  • I though the soloist was a soprano?

  • Great sound! But you can't beat Nessun Dorma 1991!

  • AMAZING!!!! Love Phantom Regiments sound!!! i have always been a huge fan of Phantom Regiment!!!! I hope to march in Phantom Regiment for the summer of 2009 or 2010!!!!

  • ok arrangement... not great but good... but goodness... SUCH GREAT SOUND! Who doesn't love the dark rich tone here? We need more phantom and elsa's and forever Harmonic and Firebird... such wonderfully done ^_^

  • I like the 91 version better. I dunno, I think the new horns sound too thin, and don't have the same sound or power as the old G bugles.

  • So how come the contras are sitting? I've never seen a contra line sit during encore... Not only that but why are they in front? Just curious

  • I know =]

The Mello runs make me happy =]

Wish I had the music to it.

  • I transcribed that ending w/the mello runs a while back. There's some incredible arranging in that. JD definitely knew what he was doing.

  • I love that dark sound

  • great arrangement and song and love phantom!

  • great arrangement and song and love phantom!

  • Good song, Personally i would arrange some parts different in the music but it still sounds quite good.

  • jesus christ, parker is a soloist in nessun dorma and his brother is drum captain... what were you two fed as kids?

  • wheaties... lol..

  • ah, yet more proof that brass instruments are infinitely superior to woodwinds.

  • That's so sad...

...I am inclined to agree with you, although I'm a flute player.

  • wow! excellent

  • I wish they had the original front ensemble parts as 91

  • Nessun Dorma was great in 91 and it is great here too. PS. Phantom should have won in 89 as well. No question.

  • i don't agree. the effect of SCV's music that year was well deserving of a championship.

  • I am comming from holland and I like Phantom,

    This is GREAT

  • So...like...terrifying? Cuz he's so bad-a?

  • I was only joking because I know the guy. He plays well, which is obvious from the video.

  • That horn player is terrible. And by terrible I mean awesome. He and the ensemble both sound great.

  • Sooooo good!!!!!! We played this in my High school wind ensemble.. but its nothing like Phantom! OMG I LOVE PHANTOM REGIMENT!!!

  • Does anyone know how late in the season they got the blue parts on their uniforms that the had at finals? Im wondering how early on this video was, Because if they sound that bad ass playing that in like... june, I wanna here them play it after finels. I think I would have to go kill myself right after words, cuz life couldn't get any better. I would make out with there whole euph line, and im totally straight.

  • We had the blue baldrics and gauntlets in the show for the Atlanta Regional while we were at McEachern HS, very late in the season. This video is while we were in KY, which was early season (June 26).

  • Who ever you are, I love you. Anyone who marched Phantom is my hero. Thank you for doing what you do and doing it well. The world is a better place because of you.

  • i agree with popeye

  • yes. yes it was.

  • yhea...this wasnt in KY unless there was some show that i didnt know about...

  • this was after the shows, in the encore section.

  • I believe this was in Menomonie, WI

I sat right behind the camera man of this...I had a knot in my throat...very powerful!

  • I think that the only reason PR can't win is they have trouble assembling a cohesive show. Anybody who hears them knows it's quite clear that they have the most balanced brass in the activity, which allows them to play complicated, but smooth pieces to perfection. The problem is the visual element, whether it's the drill, guard, I'm not sure, it just seems like music is the strong point, the co-ordination and blending of the visual and auditory would give these guys an ideal corps.

  • I think you should die. Did you see there 2007 show? Twas like and orgasm to the eyes. My favorite part of Phantom is there music, but i could watch that show over and over again with it on mute. The bring the croud in with the bodies and there guard is AMAZING! I would give my left nut to march there. Really, i would, thats an offer.

  • yeah dude srsly you must not know what you are talking about, phantom's got one of the best brass sounds in all of dci

  • how many brass titles do they have??

  • where did you march?

  • That would be very stupid of me to say, but anyway....

I just don't like the way phantom sounds, I'm sorry. They push their sound way too far past it's limits, maybe not in this specific standstill performance, but during field shows they do, and their are alot of corps, some not in the top 6, that sound alot better than phantom. IMHO.

  • This is the translation for the above statement:

I am very stupid, but anyway....

I just don't like good, professional music; I'm sorry. It hurts my ears. Maybe I'm gay or something, but I definitely don't like it, and I wish to go to hell, but there are definitely other people who think the same. IMHO

  • Translation of the above translation:

I'm not a professional musician, but I think I know what they do, which is push the sound past it's limits just for the sake of volume. I believe screaming is the same as singing, and that Mariah Carey is equivalent to Renee Fleming.

I'm also a homophobe trying to find a way to justify myself in an activity called music, where half the great minds, particularly classical composers, have been homosexuals, so I think I'll try to smear them. IM(not-so )HO.

  • its their sound, just like bd has their own jazzy sound and scouts have a latin-y sound

  • as in change their name to Cadets to be able to win a championship....because the Cadets have more than 1 championship....am I able to connect any of the dots here?

  • It was a joke, nevermind.
