@SaxDude1995 he teaches at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. you would have to look up a selmer neck catalog book. there are plenty of them to pick from.

a virtuosic performance but i feel the connection with the music itself was lost at times, it was rhythmicaly accurate and the notes were clear but the music is much more than the notes i feel the phrases could have been shaped better and you could really make something of this performance, make music out of it if the audince is too impressed it means youve lost them and thus the point of the piece is gone. thats my motto for music. :) good job though, i look forward to seeing more of your work.
That's a ridiculous motto. The audience is never "too impressed", the point of technical pieces is to blow the audience away with your leet skills tbh. He added lots of style and good phrasing into the piece. He is a saxophone professor at NCSA. Get new ears please.
zachindie, I do agree with you that the purpose of this piece of probably to show off. That being said, littleindian17 has a great point when he expresses that not everything in music has to be so fast. Slow, emotional pieces can be just as impressive as the insanely fast ones.
What are you talking about? I never said otherwise. I personally love playing pieces that incorporate both technical and very lyrical parts into them. However, this is a very technically based piece past the opening.
For those of you who are wondering what sax he plays, I was his student while he was on faculty at columbia university in NYC. He was playing a selmer series III at the time. He also has a great series II that he plays a lot. His mouthpiece set up that he prefers is an s90 with a bay ligature.
taimur sullivan would sound this good on a student sax with a lollipop stick for a reed, its irrevelant what sax hes uses, it hours of practice you're hearing.. and by the way SCIDAVE theres no way you can tell what sax hes using by ear unless you're superman!. Gimp.
it sounds like he's playing a Mark VI, either that or one of the newer Yamahas, I've got a Custom EX Yamaha and it sounds like that, although I don't claim to be able to play like this fella!
I can tell you so much that you'll get a sound like this out of most of the saxophones out there - if you're good anyway.
This is a nice sound, but I have another favorite of mine. He's my teacher at the Conservatoire in Bergen. His name is Renee Wiik, and maybe I'll upload some recordings of him later this year. I've taken masterclasses with Frederick L. Hemke as well, but as a player Renee Wiik is definately Norways best.
Got my hopes up when he started with the Staigers version...thought I was gonna see some triple tonguing...the Demersseman version is the weakest "Carnival"
If I remember correctly, because I played in this concert, he put it together in just a few days, if that many. So, regardless of which version he played, he still managed to do an excellent job with it. That and Taimur is the cat's PJ's.
hmmm... i haven't gotten to talk to Dr. McAllister much since he left for Arizona. Maybe Taimur is playing it after all. Possibly Michael Whitcombe... even though he left the group recently.
Otis Murphy is good, but many people would rather hear him play fast passages and nothing slow. If you want to talk verstatile, get a Donald Sinta recording.
the saxaphone player is awesome...jease thats hard

this is why saxophone should be incorporated into orchestras.

There's only like six people in the audience. What's up with that? This dude rocks!

it was probably a band festival and those six people may just be judges

the type of sax you have doesnt really effect how you sound its mainly your embuecher(sp?) and your set up you use

I think Otis Murphy has a better sound and with much more flexibility on the saxophone. Remember this guy took the place of the great Eugene!!

i agree; ever heard Murphy's recording of Claude Smith's Fantasia?

It's a small world...I attend Jackson State University and we performed Fantasia with Otis Murphy. Otis truly is a master and a great friend.

I believe he's the one playing the Albright Sonata on the Prism Quartet's upcoming Albright album.
rickbusarow 5 years ago
I think they are keeping Tim McAllister's recording of the Sonata for that CD. Taimur is going to play Heater....which is an absolute beast.
SaxTrane03 4 years ago
Dr. McAllister told me personally last September that someone else was recording it for the album.
