  • The voice of Dr. Vonnegut: Keep it simple.

  • He always said the rich are just getting richer and now its become more and more of a reality we all live in

  • ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; :-)

  • I respectfully disagree on the semicolon usage.

  • oh my goodness i am so jealous of those that witnessed this!

    rest in peace kurt

  • Watch a Pre-January 8th copy of Inception. Listen closely when the actors say imagine, reality, and safe, or point pistols. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Some say they hear, do it.

  • fuck semicolons!! hahahah

  • Of course he was bitter. He experienced enough to understand more than most. As Americans, we are abusing the Earth. We are fat. And we are ignorant. He wasn't lying.

  • Transvestite hermaphrodite; I'm gonna stop using semi-colons now.

  • If this isn't nice, what is? ahaha

  • Flushed Turd

  • It seemed to me that 85% of the students in that audience could hardly keep their eyes away from their cell phones and pocket protectors.

  • if Kurt Vonnegut had come to my school, I would've been sitting up on the stage and shaking his hand the entire time. The man was incredible.

  • fuck you then sir... fuck you then.

  • i can't believe i thought of going to this and put it off or forgot or something like that

  • i was about to write the exact same thing as nemohearttaco.

  • my favorite writer. he is in heaven now (his favorite joke).

  • so it goes

  • "Don't use semi-colons. They stand for nothing. They are transsexual hermaphrodites."

  • dead eye dick:]

  • haha they censored d ick. so it goes.

  • I was unable to attend. I would like this tapped...

  • The narrator has an obnoxious voice.

  • Well ... I've been an admirer of Kurt Vonnegut's work for 20 years and I think his voice should be heard loud and clear, but I think his comments on the very useful semi-colon are misguided. These are among the more subtle of the shock troops of composition and comprehension; their use should be valued.

  • gord: It seems the semicolon is a confused punctuation. It does not know whether it wants to be a colon or a comma. All the others are more definite, they KNOW what their purpose is. ;) lol

  • In my eyes, the only use of semicolons are in programming (C for instance) and emoticons. hahaha. ;-)

  • And 'just' maybe in sentences with too many commas as it is. :D

  • I never thought of a semicolon in that way...

  • Take it easy on the buckeyes ...there's retard juice in the water. moda focus!

  • yep

  • RIP Mr. Vonnegut.

  • RIP Kurt Vonnegut

  • So it goes ...

  • i read this some many times today and i cant believe i forgot that it came from his book

  • RIP kurt

  • Its sad to see such an amazing writer and human being go.

  • Remember this fellow YouTubers . Admonish the term " Bitter ", and see such verbalisations as just cynicism . Free speech and all that . If everyone went around being blissfully positive and correct you have any idea how piss boring this Godforsaken world would become ?

  • Victorian: Yeah, optimists make me sick ;) That's why I personally, am often such a pessimistic bastard.

  • I'm not convinced , I heard a taped interview of Vonnegut recently , and yes his views are a little embittered , but fuelled also with pathos , irony and humour . If his ironic rants are lost to some people , perhaps they should read good , wholesome and safe writings . The man is a maverick and independant thinker and should be revered as such .

  • If this isn't nice I don't know what is.

  • haha as Uncle Alex would say.

  • there's no such thing as too bitter you fucking morons

  • so insightful. thank you for that well-though out review.

  • Hey whats your problem?

You got sand in your cunt?

  • LOL!

  • Sign me up as angry and bitter too ! Who besides someone with their head deep up their digestive tract sucking on their half-digested meds isn't ?

  • shutup cabnet

  • God bless you Mr.Vonnegut, its sad to see such a great writer become such a bitter old fart. I used to wonder why he stoped writing but it was all too apparent at ohio state that day. Hes not funny anymore hes just mean.

  • i thought he was always amazingly bitter and became more and more bitter. All of his books are about how stupid and evil humanity is. It might be true but it doesn't make for such great reading for me.

  • yeah hes always been bitter, but not like he is now. if you were there you might remenber me i was the one who walked out. sorry kurt. but as for unreadability you must be crazy, he is the greatist living author. period.

  • bitter? his books are realistic i didn't think they were bitter

  • I think he´s fantastic. And none of his "meanness" is uncalled for. The planet would be better off without people. That´s a fact!

  • Kurt Vonnegut seems to have been pessimistic about humanity in general and America in particular since at least the early 1960's. In late 1968 or early 1969, while he was writing "Slaughterhouse Five," I was attending the University of Michigan when Vonnegut arrived as a "Writer in Residence." He got bored and left after a week, but before he left he said, "What I'm working on now will be very good. Everything [I write] after that will be bullshit." And he was absolutely right.

  • bramicus, i'd love to see what you've done with your life since the 60's. vonnegut's work is a treasure for this world. i'm not impressed that you knew KV and that you didn't like anything he wrote after SH5. it's trendy to say that but it's ill informed. vonnegut's words and wit were priceless to the very end. we've lost so much today. god bless you mr. vonnegut!

  • I guess you just call people names when you can't support your own point of view with facts or reasoned argument, AndyPanderPander. I'm not impressed.

I've nothing against Vonnegut; I love his early work. It's just my opinion that after 1969 he decided to take it easy and coast on his reputation, as he implied he would. Everything he wrote after that was stream-of-consciousness blather interspersed with irrelevancies like comments about the length and width of his own penis.

  • Bram, I see you have been reading Breakfast of Champions.

    Atta boy. =)

P.S. Vonnegut spoke about the length of character's penises because he was satirizing common thought and perception. He was, after all, known for his brilliant irony.

  • Maybe you're right about why Vonnegut talked about the length of peoples penises. Or perhaps you're trying to the too deeply. There is such a thing as pure humor.

  • Wow, you definitely had a handle on Vonnegut's sense of humor there. It's ok, though. Wit is for the witty.

  • there will be a taped what?

  • I was there. It was cool to hear him speak since he's a living legend, but for half of the Q and A his mic was so low you could only hear mumbles.
