CHU'CH!!!!! A Soul Revival… What Music should be… Professors of Performance - Try to be sad, mad, or tired after watching this…. it ain't gonna happen!!! AMAZING ;o)
@Jamesscearce You know, I think you called it!. I had to post a reply, because I was thinking the first time I saw this about two weeks ago, that Townsend may have got his trademark "windmill" arm movement from Sam and Dave at 6.44. He was sitting in the audience? Too much of a coincidence. It's brilliant too how they are just about used up at 6:34, and then they are able to pull a bit more energy out of the bag. Awesome epicness!
@rauxiegurl You're right, cuz they have nothing to hold on to! Born in Motown in 1950 I'm 1 White boy that knows his soul! This IS soul!!! Too bad 4 those not in the loop and those w/a lack of diversifacation in musical awareness! The people that wouldn't know great soul music if they were Sam and Dave's twin brothers!
39-year-old Soul/Hip-Hop fan here from Detroit, and I must say if this doesn't move you, you are one dead muthafucka. As Chuck D once asked, WHO STOLE THE SOUL?
Sam and Dave used to be the support acts for Otis Redding at a lot of his gigs, and they say that while they were on Otis would be waiting backstage completely shitting himself cos he was terrified of going on after them :) they really were amazing performers
Pure American Genius on that stage. Booker T (keybords), Steve Cropper (guitar), "Donald Duck" Dunn (bass), Al Jackson (drums), and the Memphis Horns and, of course, Sam and Dave! Thank you Staxx records for pulling together geniuses like Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and so many others.
Everything you see in this video is missing today. The components of music, arrangements, composition, live performance, energy, synergy amongst the musicians, and delivery is unparalleled by any contemporary offerings.
Not only is this an exceptional song, but Sam and Dave moved with such Soul-infused fluidity - just smooth as glass. Footwork damn perfect, just as their timing was on-point. Impeccable, really - considering that both couldn't stand each other in real life.
@theDeckisStacked The music was more varied than just the two categories Soul and Pop ... or even Rhythm and Blues for that matter. What about the Ramsey Lewis Trio? Remember when two of his band members recorded Soulful Strut? And who was the drummer in the Ramsey Lewis band, which sometimes had more than three musicians? Maurice White, who founded Earth Wind and Fire. And what about The Famous Flames (AKA JBs) who later teamed up with Parliment/Funkadelic?
@theDeckisStacked There were other band even within the Stax family like the Barkays, who were with Otis when his plane crashed. And how about the Famous Flames and the Motown house band The Funk Brothers?
@theDeckisStacked BookerT and MGs were influential but there were other bands just as influential within the stax family. The Barclays backed Sam and Dave and Otis Redding, too. The Barclays were with Otis when his plane crashed. How about The Famous Flames? What about the Motown house band .. the Funk Brothers?
@koenigma77: Not just Black it seems the entire world has gone off on some strange things. The standards of excellence in music has been lowered all the way down to the gutter for Black and White music and everything in between.
These guys worked a crows without all the costumes and the fireworks and extra frills that less talented people need. The crowd is brought to a stand and reacts just as planned. It is an exchange, not just some show to be observed. Think about the greats of Motown, etc and you come to the conclusion that this is sheer talent plus very hard work and it shows. The world never forgot this American music and it never will. A million views? It speaks to everybody.
Ive always liked this sort of music, I'm just 13 but every time I go to my grandparent's house I hear it and it's just wonderful!!!! I wish I knew more...
@Headhiphop Could not have put it better myself. Well said mate. Not in the vocal abilities of Jackie wilson or Sam Cooke, even Marvin Gaye, but a true personafication of sixties soul. The real stuff which so many today try to emulate. They were (thanks to Issac Hayes and David Porter) magnificient!!!!. even Otis Redding said that about them.
@FanOfPopCulture I am 19 and love this music not todays garbage few songs are good from today but the rest stinks. Wish they would bring this back or me go back in time. Sad thing is I cant go to clubs and dance to this
Great music from a time when boring hippies like the Doors, jefferson Airplane, and jimi Hendrix were ruining rock'n'roll. Everything about this is good, the rhythm section, the horns, the guitar and keyboards, the vocals, and most of all the moves!
@grantg60 This is a great soul performance, but I don't know how you can discount Jimi and Jim. Morrison had his moments, and Hendrix set the world on fire! You sound too nostalgic to appreciate newer, progressive music. I'm currently a huge death metal fan, but I grew up on the music of the 60's and 70's. The legends of the past laid the groundwork for the music we have today. If you can't develop your taste then I feel sorry for you.
Is the crowd dead? If I was there Id be dancing all night To bad I was born in 92 and could not enjoy music and good people back than. Seems like I have more in common with adults than I do my own age group
Does anyone know why they have 2 mic's? I see that a lot in these old video's, but I don't understand why? Is one for the higher tones or something? Anyone has a clue?
@yoursatan Generally, one mic has a reversed polarity, so it's 180 degrees out of phase with the other across all frequencies. By spacing them slightly apart, the singer will be heard (because his voice is mainly in one mic) & ambient noise will be cancelled (because it is picked up in both mics). It’s the same technique used in pilot’s headsets. It’s either that or one for the PA, and one for the recording.
Renaissance comes but once, and we are looking at here,Booker T,Otis Redding,Sam Cooke,Sly and the Family Stone,James Brown,Chambers Brothers and Arthur Lee and Love, sorry and James Marshall Hendrix, all in the mix, sensational african American music.
whenever I hear this song my feet start moving and I can't help to dance! But I'm white so I really look ridiculous... But in my head it looks pretty awesome though!
In case you were wondering if there was any hope for the younger generation's taste in music, i'm loving this and i'm 19
