I watched Brotherhood first, then the original series and was sorely disappointed, lust loves someone, wrath isnt wrathful, tons of plot holes and after it all, it turns out 1. they do human transmutation stupidly again and 2. a connection with our universe and early 20th century germany... also, the movie makes a very inaccurate and misleading Nietzsche reference... brotherhood is a far better series.

@kitsteel Honestly it is a matter of opinion, but I personally think the regular Fullmetal Alchemist is better than Brotherhood. Just by the fact that the regular Fullmetal had more of an emotional and serious feel and brotherhood was more action oriented and had many corny jokes which was very irritating. Also the regular Fullmetal is much more critically acclaimed. But as I said before it is a matter of opinion.

@southnote well yes, of course it's a matter of opinion :P, but the 1st series isnt more critically acclaimed on several anime sites (a friend of mine showed me the site she uses for telling how critically acclaimed a series is, 2nd was above 1st series). In 1st series, they don't learn nething, the homonculi don't suit their names as aptly & Scar is much more the run of the mill terrorist he only appears to be... As for corny jokes a lack of emotional depth & sincerity, I couldn't disagree more

@kitsteel Well the anime sites you are looking at are most likely made by people as where I am talking about critics and awards, which is much more credible than random anime sites. Also even by people, look at Tv.com and IMdb, the ratings are higher for the regular Fullmetal. And as for the names and Scar, I will give you that.

@southnote yeah, the sites i refer to are not random- I will try to find out where they're from. I've read several reviews and critiques and there doesn't appear to be any serious criticism of brotherhood other than that the first episodes are too similar to those of the first series. Your suggestion that there is a more emotional and serious feel in the first series is what I object to specifically. IMDB and critics are not always to be relied upon though i.e. Roger Ebert chats a lot of shit :P

@kitsteel Well if you find those sites I will be happy to take a look at them. As you may not agree with me on the emotional aspect of brotherhood you have to admit on the much higher quantity of corny jokes found in Brotherhood rather than the regular Fullmetal, which puts a big down on the show. I guess many people enjoy those jokes though, but that is a big reason why Brotherhood is worse for me as well as the other reasons I stated.

I'm really not too sure about the jokes thing, unless you mean things like Ed's reactions to being called short or Mai's reaction to her discovery of the truths behind Ed or Al? I suppose what with the much greater sincerity brought about by the sheer number of people who have died and do die - Liore is no Xerxes, and Xerxes is no Amestris as well as characters like Pride/Selim the jokes go unnoticed in some ways?

@kitsteel Yeah it is usually Ed's reactions to being called short. Also sometimes when Ed and Winry fight sometimes that is annoying. I truly cannot name all of the instances but there are many times.

In all respect, the original FMA series is amazing, but really it's the 1st series that has all the mistakes. Brotherhood follows the manga pretty much the whole storyline, while the original series diverts right after the Elrics return to meet their teacher. But both series are still very good, I think, with great voice acting~ And the animation in Brotherhood is beautiful :3

But if you just watched the original one you won't enjoy FMA : Brtherhood that much. trust me , i've watched the orignal 3 times and when i started watching brotherhood i kept pointing out the mistakes and how it just wasn't right, how the animation was different, how the story has no emotion etc.

But after a couple of months i decided to give Brotherhood a honest chance and i found it to be pretty amazing :D . Best anime ever. Both the original and Brotherhood.

There is a song I really like, my dad heard it and really liked it also, but then he played it ALL THE TIME until I got so sick of it I didn't want to hear it for a long time. So you should try to be a bit more careful in trying to get her to like it. And it's not her fault if she doesn't like it, make it clear you are accepting of that or you will alienate her (making her less willing to listen in the future).

The true meaning of the series was not about Edward getting stronger and stronger over time, however, what it's true essence and what I personally truly appreciate about the series is that it teaches how us, humans in particular could become such a foul beast when exposed to power.
