Kind of a 'cheater' cartoon done just before Freleng left the studio, using a lot of rotoscoped footage from Friz's earlier cartoons, along with the rotoscoping of Fred & Ginger (the Schlesinger studio had just finished doing animation work for RKO on it's 1937 movie "What's Your Birthday?" and apparently as part of the deal, they were able to borrow film of Astaire and Rogers' dance number from RKO to animate over for the cartoon's dance number).
This cartoon is awful! But, it's very funny too. They've made us, Blacks, look so unattractive, but they made the Whites attractive. Oh, I tell you this cartoon is awful, but I can't stop laughing.
It's funny because I know we don't look like the Black characters, and I know that all Whites are not attractive, and Whites know that some of them are very ugly, while some Blacks are amazingly attractive, and this has always been the case.
let's see, we have Fred and Ginger dancing, then Al Jolson singing with a black face, you have aunt Jam playing his mom, talking about his old log cabin, you have a representation of Louie singing, and many characters happy and dancing to swing music, i've seen more offensive stuff in 'All This and Rabbit Stew.' the original, and in the stand up of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Chris Rock.
Wow this is really creative...but lets not deny that it can be labled as offensive by the indoctrinated so far I am only mildly offened I have seen worse
This is actually a really good cartoon. Excellent animation and great references to real products, or products that once were. It's a shame this is labeled as offensive by some.
If you expect me to believe that the people at Warner Bros. were completely sober when working on this animation, I would call them LIARS!! These are the images that would most likely play in my mind when I'm high!

The affluence of the Industrial Age made possible the extravagance of the Jazz Age.

All the racist scenes were removed from many syndicated prints of this cartoon, which makes this a short cartoon whenever it is shown.

Do you have the print of "Goofy Groceries" where the 1938 ending music cuts to the 1941 ending music at the last second?
