The game was boring because the coaches wanted their players to be in shape? That doesn't make any sense. In order for you to play defense like the Knicks did back then for the entire game you had to be in top physical condition.
Totally true. Back then though I didnt think anything of it i just thought they played hard but when you look back you see that today's defenses are just shit because of the rules. Its one reason why Phil said Jordan would average 45 in his prime by todays rules.
Every time I watch these, I can't believe the amount of physical contact that was allowed, and I can't believe ANY player in today's era, that could be as consistent as they are now.
Even Lebron, one of the best physical specimen in sports history would have problems vs this defense.
You're right.. but I disagree about Lebron.. he's the ONLY guy in today's league who could've excelled.. Kobe would've been kicked out of the league for whining and/or fighting.. Bill Simmons said it best.. if MJ from 90-93 was playing today, he would average 40 ppg and it wouldn't even be hard for him.
The problem with Bron is, he doesn't use his size to his advantage. People always say he'd kill players from other eras, but by default he makes himself smaller by being a long range shooter. He doesn't post up consistently well enough to punish smaller players, he bails out taller players on the perimeter by shooting stepbacks, pull ups and fadeaways, he doesn't come of screens nearly as much, his footwork is that of a robot. We saw what physical and good defense does to him.
even with a limited offensive skill set, he still puts up numbers, but he still needs alot to learn, which is SCARY!!
But I still don't see him being consistent vs the old school defense. I think Rodman would shut him down, I think players would keep him from penetrating and force him into even more jumpers.
I remember Kobe stans saying "Kobe will just shoot over the defense from 25 ft" yeah, he can do that, but how consistent will he be?
I'm sure 1 outta 6 he'll play well, but that aint good.
@andgar923 well in this season, 2010-2011, he shoots more than his scores.. and he's consistent in that in todays defense.. LOL! if he was playing in MJ's era.. he would quit. LOL!
@kingtoooooot And that's wrong. Lebron doesn't shoot nearly as much as he scores. He shot 51% from the field this year, taking 19 shots per game and scoring nearly 27 points per game. He was extremely efficient.
I agree.. the defensive rules don't help him either.. like in the Finals last year and in the playoffs this year, they just overload the whole floor towards Lebron and dare him to try and beat them (which he has to since nobody else on their team can). If they had to play him straight up without the zone concepts, he would be unstoppable. He's pretty much unstoppable as it is though. When his medium range jumper gets a little better, fugeddaboutit.
They played back then.

MJ is great at jump shots, check out 4:36.
Ewing----a great player.
Why I dont see Ewing in NBA 2K8(the video game)?

When you say MJ is great a jump shots, you're just stating the obvious. It doesn't take an Einstein to know that buddy.

good grief...playing the knicks back then was like playing through sludge.
i remember getting so frustrated by their defense as a fan...
with today's rules, the knicks would have had to suit up fans, cause the WHOLE team would have fouled out in the second quarter
