Mary is great. To the haters: Mary did the hit recording when she was about 15. Everybody's voice changes in that amount of time. She still sings it great, and it remains a great American novelty song. Mary was way ahead of her time. And just by the virtue of the fact that she can still do it. Are you serious?! Like BlackMonk66 says, do you really thing her voice should sound the same as it did in 1964? That's 40+ years ago! As a musician, I find Mary's voice to be incredibly good, particularly given this is a live recording. Voices age, but Mary still cuts it. Does Paul McCartney sound the same as he did in the 60's. Hell no! But do we still appreciate his performances today? Hell yes! Mary is a treasure and I applaud her for sharing her talent with us today.
Plus, as DavisCalif notes, the difference between live and Memorex means a lot. Often, singers will use a lower key in live performance than was used on the record just to make it easier on the vocal cords. That powerful, operatic voice of hers holds up well. Can you imagine her dueting with MeatLoaf?

Are you serious?! Like BlackMonk66 says, do you really thing her voice should sound the same as it did in 1964? That's 40+ years ago! As a musician, I find Mary's voice to be incredibly good, particularly given this is a live recording. Voices age, but Mary still cuts it. Does Paul McCartney sound the same as he did in the 60's. Hell no! But do we still appreciate his performances today? Hell yes! Mary is a treasure and I applaud her for sharing her talent with us today.

Plus, as DavisCalif notes, the difference between live and Memorex means a lot. Often, singers will use a lower key in live performance than was used on the record just to make it easier on the vocal cords. That powerful, operatic voice of hers holds up well. Can you imagine her dueting with MeatLoaf?
