A Top 5 hit for The Marketts in February of 1964. On February 1, 1964, this was the #3 song in the USA. The #1 song was I Want to Hold Your Hand by The Beatles. Nothing more needs to be said.
I have this on 45rpm and the CD version came out on ROCK INSTRUMENTAL CLASSICS VOL. 2 THE SIXTIES. RHINO Records. This was the best of only 3 songs that made the charts for THE MARKETTS posting at #3 in 1963.
The song was actually written for the Twilight Zone but they could not agree on a royalty rate so the TV show simply reversed the three notes and used it as their own song.
i wish the itunes version or any other digital version of the original sounded like this, this is pitched higher and faster! but the digital i low pitched and slow! :(
@Nemesis0300 I've noticed that some songs just from the radio are slightly sped up for time purposes even the if the song is the single edit. It's very noticable on the doors light my fire Donovan's sunshine superman and a number of monkees songs and whenever you hear pictures of matchstick men by status Quo on the radio -I have the single and noticed I had to slow up from the recording I got off the radio to learn the song-
it was based on the theme from the twilight zone but they couldnt call it that so they called it outer limits [ on the first pressings] then changed it to out of limits to get out of trouble.
He went back into the studio with his second group, "The Routers" and he recorded another national hit song, "Let's Go!" by The Routers. While on a national tour with the Routers, he sat down and wrote his biggest and most popular smash recording, "Out of Limits", which went to #1 in the nation and earned him his first BMI award for instrumental of the year.
Recognizing the start of a new era in music, the surfing craze, Michael Z. Gordon wrote his first hit song, "Surfer's Stomp" almost immediately after he formed his first rock & roll band, The Marketts.[1] Barely able to play the guitar, he taught himself how to play as he toured with his group.
They should play this in the 7th inning at the Mets' Citi Field ballpark instead of "Lazy Mary" or "Sweet Caroline" (which is the Red Sox song). I think this song would rev Mets fans up.... maybe the team, too! LOL
Happens to the best of us, Rick--sometimes they rush, sometimes they drag. It's tough to get the Goldilocks speed. Thanks anyway for the post, 'cause it's a great effin' record. Believe it's Tommy Tedesco on guitar.
Your right its tommy tedesco[ the most recorded guitarist] he said the marketts were 2 groups a black group played the surf and a white group played the space ,he also wrote a guitar book ,had a column in guitar player magazine ,made direct to disc records ,movie and tv soundtracks...
Tedesco was only a part of great musicains who pleyd on the session which included Glenn Campbell, Leon Russell and Michael Z. Gordon. There was never a black group and a white group. Gordon wrote and produced Out Of limits but never got credit for proudcing. Gordon also started The Routers which had the hit, hand clapping record, "Let's Go". You can still hear the song at all the sports events.
You're right, Hal Blaine was also a regular on the Marketts recordings as was Jimmy Gordon (no relation to MZ Gordon). Plas Johnson was also the sax player on the earlier Marketts sessions.
Tommy was the spotlight on some truly great Spector b-side instrumentals that were intended as decoys to ward off clever 60s DJs who tried to discover sleeper sides against A-hits.
I recall it distinctly. I first encountered it as a kid, acquiring the original "Be My Baby" single, puzzled by the b-side. 25 years later, I uncovered the explanation.
Very true, I remember that. I was going to buy it when it was still "Outer Limits". But before I was able to raise the sixty seven cents to purchase it, they had already pulled all of those copies from the shelves and replaced them with the new title. Wish I had gotten one of the rare "Outer Limits" labels. Exactly the same recording but with a new label.
Space: I remember when this song came out and I think there was a "copy right" problem to the title, so they had to change the name a "little". We all KNEW what it was about though.
Another great instrumental from this era was "The Fugetive" (Ventures). It was also a great song (catchy beginning with hounds in the background). Nobody complained about the title though, so it stayed. It is also interesting that on the final episode of Fugitive, the streets downtown were QUIET!
Sceen Gems owned the copyright to the tv program, Outer Limts. They thratened to sue Warner Bros if they didn't change the name and WB caved because they didn't want to fight a lawsuit. Stupid!
Like,I want a Recording of this from the Record on a quality of well good, this sounds great but it has the camera filter noise, u know? SO please if u can make a vid responce of this as an mp3, then i can get it off Youtube my self.
Well, the faster version is not the way this song was meant to be heard. I'm sorry, if you prefer it, but if you MUST! there are softwares where you can rip the audio from YT vids to make MP3s.

I think it was in Ronnie Spector's memoir
that it was explained. Phil would not bother issuing a B-side by the artist with the threat of some DJ arbitrarily turning it
into a hit, so he'd fill the B-side with some unrelated instrumental by the session players.
