Ok now I've found the one I want & need, has so many (64!) different drum styles & effects. Whoa...Ok who has one of these for sale & will it hook up to a laptop for recording?
It does not have USB midi if that's what you mean by "hook up to a laptop"-but you can find cheap MIDI-to-USB converters anywhere. There are 64 kits and 400 sounds by the way.
@snyderonutube I know about the kits & sound, which is why I want to buy it ;-) It will replace a ton of African hand drums I like/use. Has nice deep tones that would cost me a fortune if I bought the same in separate drums to get same sound, about $400 each drum, never knowing what the sound will be, each one is different. Makes sense to buy the pad & get all in one drum pad, even at $600, it's a steal of a deal. Why wouldn't they build in USB hookup???
At the time of development of the basic technology for the HPD-10, which is based on the HPD-15, USB Midi connections were rare. And it's not as simple as replace a midi connector with a USB Midi connector.
@snyderonutube They haven't updated the pad since then? Like hpd 10.5 maybe? That's what I was hoping, but from the sound of it, it's same model as originally produced, no upgrades on the way for it or a newer version of it with such things fixed? I can tell I'll need to do a lot more research on this, but I still want it anyway, haven't found anything as good anywhere else. Thanks for answering my questions--no reply necessary unless you want to. You've been patient & great :)
@glazinq What else did you have to buy with it to use it right away, and what's a general estimate of the costs for those extras? Thanks :) Am saving up for my own but want to be sure I can use it immediately, so will save for all of the extras it needs before buying & frustrating myself, lol.
Well to use it right away all you really need (at bare minimum) is a set of headphones. It sounds HUGE and you can spend hours lost in your own little world. Of course if you want anyone else to hear you will need to go through an amp and speakers. You can put your ipod or CD player through it to play along and practice with your favourite music.
Optional extras are the stand (you can always just sit it on a chair or low table) and kick pedal as mentioned in this vid. As far as recording goes, you can always just plug it directly into the audio input of your laptop and record as wav files. Or you can use an Audio/USB midi interface. They are not expensive. I use a Tascam US-122.
For the kick aspect. It's cheaper, and lighter, if you just use 2 X FS-5U pedals. You WON'T have velocity
/dynamics however. But sometimes if one is keeping time with the feet, it's easier if the sound level is guaranteed to always be the same. To connect: you need a stereo-to-2 mono jacks cable. Stand: Roland makes the PDS-10 stand, but if you can find an older TAMA "Stilt" type cymbal stand, that will work to. Roland's original PDS-15, was made by Tama for Roland.
Our band - No Blood to Spare - uses a handsonic just as often as our trap set. In fact we use it for all our recordings. We use it to make music ranging from grindcore to belly dance.
They do different things. The 15 has more pads, external inputs, effects and more advanced editing. Some people never touch the edit button. The 10 is more simple overall, and also has the Rhythm Coach functions which are not in the 15. It depends on ones needs. As far as quality goes, no questions about that. Both sound great in all situations-live or recording.
I've played both and wound up buying the 10. It's sleeker, smaller, has better sounds, only losing a few tiny features like the ribbon controller. Which is why Roland are phasing out the HPD15 & you only see the 10 being promoted (and at a far better price). SOS Mag gave the 10 better reviews.
I have the 10. I use it in studio sessions and I use it live. I have no regrets. & I play professionally if that means anything. It shouldn't. lol.
So save your money. Go for the 10! Hope this helps! =)

can you record and playback percussive patterns ?
jamesal 1 year ago
The Handsonic 10 has no sequencer function. However, with the Handsonic 15, you can record / playback with the built-in sequencer..
snyderonutube 1 year ago
@jamesal
No, there is no sequencer built into the Handsonic 10. Handsonic 15-yes!

which has the better quality of samples, hpd10 or 15?
drich1972 3 years ago
Can you load your own samples?
lumin750 3 years ago
No, the HPD-10 has no memory for samples... You can control, via MIDI, external sounds of course, like with an SPD-S..or computer based sounds.
