  • I can't understand how some people reason when they say Spencer's cleans are good. Claiming that Casey struggled with the highs is an outright lie - if anything, Spencer's the one getting an annoying emo-ish distortion whenever he tries to high the highs in "Icarus lives" in particular. Chris has beast screams, no doubt - but Casey was the best Periphery vocalist by far.

  • My Dream Theater ticket brought me here.

  • the sounds Matt makes on such a small kit are just so fuckin' heavy. clearly one of the most creative and talented drummers out there.

  • Periphery crowds are so fucking dead.. I've never seen such a blunt ass crowd.. They just need to go to Texas, that's where the good crowds are

  • Range isn't what determines if a singer is great or not, especially if you have an "artificial" range where you have to strain your voice. Sadly, that's what Spencer does in order to get his sound. This is why he suffers a lot live. I'm actually sure that Chris is a better vocalist when you let him sing stuff that's in HIS range and not stuff where he has to kill himself to reach the notes. Spencer does fit very well with the band though. With some vocal training he would do way better.

  • odie0220 has the best periphery vids from way back in the day...........

  • Check out our channel!

Featured artist of the month is Periphery!

    Love that shit!

  • no wonder they got rid of him, can't stand to listen to these versions, the singer killed the vibe

  • I definitely always thought Chris's vocals were way too powerful and evil for Periphery. He definitely belongs in Ever Forthright where he can go crazy. Spencer fits better in Periphery, because his vocals are lighter.

  • ...such an awkward stage prescence

  • wtf, i didn't know new groove was out at this time?

  • he soon went on to form LMFAO..........

  • chris is an amazing singer. unbelievable, in fact. which makes me think the reason for not keeping him around is more one-dimensional than you all may think when you ask for him back. there's definitely a good fucking reason.

  • @drkenun I totally agree. I think MIsha's stated that Chris was a diva and if you're a musician drkenun I think you already know that if a wild diva appears you're pretty much fucked.

  • @Ypnovatis ya, bro, i got that shit down mayn. i know dat feel.

  • as soon as icarus lives starts the kid on the bottom rightish of the screen headbangs into the railing...

wtf is wrong with everyone else?

  • who was headlining this show?

  • Lol, I'm surprised with all this vocalist argument crap no one is talking about Jake Veredika.

  • @Wiian95 I know. He's good. He is not great though. Definitely better but Spencer but I think the C's beats him.

  • I love how Matt just makes whoever owns that big set behind him look like an idiot for having so many drums. Truly shows it's not the drumset, it's the drummer.

  • The first search result for "periphery live" on YouTube and the singer is Chris Barretto...

  • I get headaches from hearing Periphery non-Instrumentals, but with Chris they sound really good

  • They rock no matter what! The song they play in the beginning is "New Groove" off the EP they recently released! :D

  • What if they sung one octave lower. Then they wouldn't sound like girls and Chris would reach the peaks in this song.

  • you all can keep arguing about whos a better singer all you want.....THAT FUCKING DRUMMER IS INSANE!!!!!!!

  • @VICODINES1

    Master Matt Hellpern

  • At 3:12, Matt pretty much permanently melted my face.

  • Is it Me or is this particular version of light slower?

  • watch that drummer, what a groove!

  • looks like HGH made its way through the band

  • Chris is the best with clean and screams.

  • @anotionofanocean Chris' screams are the most powerful than Casey and Spencer but Spencer is better at clean vocals. Casey is a combination of the two. At least, that's my opinion

  • @Sludgeg0re dude hell yes if you could make spencer's singing have a spawn with chris' screams you'd have the best metal vocalist of all time.

  • @Sludgeg0re Only thing Casey lacked was the range Spencer has which is fucking godly range if you ask me

  • @Grecian92 yeah that too :D

  • @Grecian92 Casey had the same range surely? The craziest range is in Icarus from what I can remember and Casey fucking nailed that? Don't quote me though. I think Casey was the best singer they had. but I've been listening to the album a lot over the last few days and Spence is growing on me.

  • @SilverEvolver Not even close. He used falsetto to reach the highest note in that so where the lyric is "to write in history". Spencer can go even higher then that. Just listen to the end of frak the gods

  • @Grecian92 That's got nothing to do with range though, I'm sure Casey could hit that note, it just sounds better in falsetto. Imo, the way Spencer does it just sounds like a cat being raped, it sounds absolutely beautiful when Casey sings it. Even if he does do that one bit in falsetto.

  • @Geozone Now you're arguing opinions. The fact is Spencer has a better range. Anyone can do falsetto. I'm not saying Casey is bad, OMG far from that lol, but Spencer has a better natural range. And listen to the last singing note in Frak the Gods, that note is even higher then the one in Icarus lives.

  • @Grecian92 yeah pitch correction is amazing. :p

  • @daldofa Oh please. I have seen them live and he hit those notes. Like the one at the end of Frak the Gods.

  • @Geozone This, this, this, especially the cat-rape part. Although I oppose of your use of the term "falsetto" as if it were something negative.

  • @Grecian92 So? If it sounds like ass while doing it, the point is entirely moot. Spencer = ass in comparison with Casey when it comes to delivery.

  • @Pedestrian777 It doesn't to me. That's all the matters to me. Fact= Spencer is in Casey isn't. Get over it

  • @Sludgeg0re agreed

  • I love these guys, but I really can't understand why people liked chris so much. After hearing chris sing here, compared to spencer, chris sings as well as I do, and that's not very good. Spencer obviously has a much better sense of tone and and vocal range, I mean it's common sense. Chris is so off on certain parts. singing is not only limited to screams, even in metal, and this is even more true of a PROGRESSIVE metal band

  • @anotionofanocean Think most give Chris props for his screams, they're more powerful apparently etc.

  • uu new groove...when it was a new groove :)

  • Comment removed

  • Drummer is sickkk but i hate how he has one tom.... #1) it looks soo awkward #2) just imagine what he could do with more of them!

  • @melkyyy53 Not really, Periphery is all about the groove, and Halpern pulls it off really well.

  • @melkyyy53 I think he is already doing enough :p

  • Though Chris is great, he ruined new groove at the start

    It's better without vocals imo

  • Chris fucking baretto rules!

  • I didnt know Orphan Annie could scream like that

  • 6:33 is the moment where I will lose my shit if I ever see them live.

  • maybe it's only my opinion, but Chris can't be replaced. His voice is not as good as Spencer's but his screams are the best in today's music industry. And he's so charismatic. Fucking brilliant guy.

  • I personally prefer Travis Orbin. But that's because I find Matt's playing a bit more chaotic than grooving x)

But, hey, that's me, you know

  • @FifthSeasonMusic Except that Matt's basically the best pocket drummer in metal.

  • SHORT HAIR CORE

  • woww awesome drumming

  • Matt looks like a monkey! :)

  • Ahh..old periphery. I wish Chris was still their vocalist. If he just made a few minor changes to how he sang light, it would be perfect. Killed Icarus Lives though!

  • Ahh..old periphery. I wish Chris was still their vocalist. If he just made a few minor changes to how he sang this song, it would be perfect.

  • Ahh..old periphery.

  • Chris > Sotelo. End of story.

I hate Sotelo's voice it's too high pitched... sounds too nu-metal like Linkin Park or something. Sotelo sounds too whiny.

Chris has a more manlier voice.. just better over all. I can't understand why they kicked him out of the band :S

  • @vdjn55 Manly = Obviously better?

  • @vdjn55 Maybe because Sotelo has a better tone? Chris also sounds whiny in certain parts, so that argument is null, and Chris is in the same vocal range as Chester from Linkin Park, so I don't know where you are getting that assertion. Plus Sotelo has a much greater range. Do you really listen to music with your leathery yamsack? Does your music taste really have to reinforce your penile identity? Come on, think like a musician, jeez!

  • @vdjn55 They kicked Chris out because behind the voice he was an immature idiot.

  • @SimplyMarcusP Immature idiot or not, his screams are sick. Would have been epic if Spencer was on vocals and Barretto did the screams

  • matt halpern is so fucking good..

  • damn that drummer truly owns it

  • 4 people are deaf

  • wow they are actually really good live! I figured they would just overpower everything so much that everything blended since they have 3 fucking guitarists LOL

  • Epic intro. I never thought anyone could beat After The Burial's - Introduction to Destruction or whatever they call it..But this shit is amazing!

  • Thumbs up if Travis Barker is better than Matt.......

    JUST KIDDING!!! Periphery dominates.

  • heck yes. i played there.

  • I find it fucking funny that you see Matt tearing up a 3 piece, then in the background you see a big double bass set, and the drummer is probably nothing like Matt. Thank you Matt, for showing you don't need a huge set to be amazing or original.

  • the bass pedals making me wet 0:35

  • Okay heres my 2 cents. all this crap about whos better between chris and spencer, and matt and travis is stupid. in my opinion if periphery picks you as their vocalist and sticks with you and is able to record a full album with you, youre damn good. Props to Spencer. And if you are a drummer and can keep up with Periphery's music, AND can improv your live performance, you fuckin win. Props to Matt. lol

  • @davemr07 ..and props to Chris for giving us a few live vids and two recorded songs. Cause he's the fucking sheeeeeeet man. Seriously I get really sad when I see vids like this... Miss that voice on periphery's lovely tracks... But I have accepted Spencer.

  • @NoaOno yea i know im so happy they got spencer, i hate how chris screams in the high pitched vocal lines that are so great

  • @Drummerboy6able Ehhh... fuck spencer I wish Casey had stayed in the band.

  • is the bass player so ugly?

  • Never got the chance to see them live yet, but Chris' vocals sound much better on demos. I'm not such a big fan of Spencer's performance, but thats another endless debate - cant wait to see them on stage next month anyway!

  • most fucking awesome intro. ever.

  • i love how bulb is such a badass guitarist....but looks so 'nice'

  • Is the singer always that bad? I hope he only had a bad day.

  • @UnsTucC Me stupid, of course he's bad, that's why they kicked him

  • I love how matt has like a 2 pieces kit but still manages to destroy every other drummer out there..

  • So much better and more audible than Spencer live... Whata beast!

  • Chuck Norris listens to this when he kicks someones ass.

  • Amazing

  • djentttttttttttttttttt

  • 6:27

    (just to remember for myself)

  • 3:11 - 3:39.... orgasm on drums

  • periphery blows

  • @Buddhafuckswithyou So true, Periphery is pure garbage.

    NOT

  • @HenkieSpankie2008 lolz you totally told me bro. XD go see them live one day. they're like living white noise with retarded stage presence. its like a fucking circus act.

  • @Buddhafuckswithyou I'm actually seeing them february 12th

    Can't. Fucking. Wait.

  • @HenkieSpankie2008 Be ready for fucking disappointment.

  • @Buddhafuckswithyou Highly doubt it, but we'll see

  • @HenkieSpankie2008 are you seeing them at nottigham rock city? On a Thursday? If soo I'll see you the fuck there lml

  • @samfulfordskates No bro, I'm seeing em in Holland. Saturday I believe, gonna be a sick fucking show

  • Thumbs up if Alex makes you laugh how he moves on stage.

  • Matt Halpern is a champion at drums. Seriously.

  • @drumkrazy1984 I'm not a big fan of Periphery, but Matt is indeed a fucking beast behind the kit.

  • @GuardianOfFate12 Hey man, you don't have to like a whole band to enjoy a musicians work!

  • holy fuck that intro is buttery

  • matts drumming makes my jaw drop. everytime.

  • Im going to see this live tommorrow. St. pete FL

  • Finally a metal singer with an Afro :D

it sad we almost don't see Bulb in the entire video

  • @SNiPeZzzzZzz He's not the vocalist anymore.

  • @ZezimaStorm Yeah I knew that

  • @ZezimaStorm Damn right, because he's not as awesome as Spencer.

  • @SNiPeZzzzZzz rage against the machine head and new alice in chains

  • @xxKeepItMetalxx Haha :D

  • thumbs up if you think matts drumming is pure sex.

  • @drummerdominicjordan Maybe for those who haven't actually had sex....

  • @RockSchooled oh , so you think it is?

  • @drummerdominicjordan

All of it is pure sex.

  • @drummerdominicjordan Orbin was a billion times better, by any standard. Matt's good, but he can't begin to compare.

  • @allhailpantera123 Matt has more feeling, Orbin is very robotic. 2 very different styles. The fact that Matt can improv and has alot of feeling when he is playing makes him a bit better.

  • @shreddmasterj I disagree completely. I think Orbin's a much more dynamic drummer. Orbin's in another league altogether. Matt's any other djent or deathcore drummer, but Orbin's a real progressive musician.

  • @shreddmasterj Definitely can agree with that. I like Orbin, but his style is too "instructional" so to say for me. I love Matt, he is a great drummer AND brings about a presence that not many other average drummers even bring!

  • @Bruins8130 Yea, dont get me wrong Orbin is a FANTASTIC drummer, but im more about the "free flow" of things. Matt is a brilliant drummer.

  • @shreddmasterj Yeah very much agree with you there. and that allhailpantera123 has it all wrong, Matt Halpern is just as good, if not better, than Orbin, just with more energy and presence.

  • @shreddmasterj I personally disagree, check out Travis' video of Icarus Lives, it shows he can still groove pretty hard! Matt may be more of an improv player, but Travis is definitely more technically capable, as shown by some of the session work he does. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I think you need to give Travis a bit more credit.

  • @Mp5Drummer Orbin is more technically inclined, because he keeps all his patterns in a lock-down type pattern. Matt Halpern mainly plays what he feels. Ive seen them both in the studio, and also doing their own drum solos. Travis has some good groove in his solos, but goes back to being a robot for the songs. Matt's entire set is like one big in-the-pocket orgy. I guess I favor him a bit more because of my own play style.

  • @shreddmasterj True, but sometimes in more technical music there isn't a lot of room for improvisation. I'd say Matt works better for Periphery thanks to the fact that the drumming is certainly groove based, even though it's technical. I'm more of a fan of Orbin just because I've learned so much by watching him tackle so many different styles and be extremely inventive. I am by no means ripping on Matt though.

  • @shreddmasterj not of he cant play better then orbin

  • @jaaakkke That's strictly opinion and you're entitled to it. But saying it as if it were a universal truth would just make you look ignorant.

  • @allhailpantera123 1:34 to 1:47. Matt's a great drummer, but completely ruins that part, the use of cymbals there is absolutely unnecessary and ruins the mood of that section. However, it is the only fault of his that I've found...

  • @jacksonguitarsrule1 I think Matt's a great drummer, I just hate him in comparison to how much I like Orbin. Orbin's decades ahead, and it disappoints me that Periphery would replace him.

  • @jacksonguitarsrule1

He play the cymbals there because because he's the drummer and he has to keep the time, unless all of them had in ear monitors connected to metronomes, he has to continue doing that.

  • @jacksonguitarsrule1 He does that in all the parts when he's not playing, its to keep the band in time with the backing track (coming through the monitors and matt's in-ears :)

  • @drummerdominicjordan Maybe if he had a bigger kit ;)

  • @drummerdominicjordan This drummer is pure terrible. Travis cannot be replaced.

  • @RANKSWASS Both great drummers :)

  • @RANKSWASS They're both amazing drummers.

  • @RANKSWASS you are an idiot. they are both great, but i like matt halpern's style more

  • @RANKSWASS HAHAHAHA...

    ARE YOU JOKE ...RIGHT???

  • Matt Halpern - one of the most fun drummers to watch. well i guess that can be said about the band in whole (release another CD Periphery, we know you got enough material for one anyway)

  • @jsbuck99 either your a dumb ass who plays drums or u don't know anything. Because that guy has alot of talent. Crazy time signatures and lots of changes.

  • This video always bothered me. Chris doesn't even try to hit the high notes in Icarus, even though I'm sure he could.

  • wtf i didnt notice it before but isin't that travis orbins kit in the background?

  • @Laihoistheman no, the cymbal setup is different and so are the toms between the bass drums. not sure if orbin even uses two bass drums or just double pedals.

  • @Laihoistheman It's not.

  • @Laihoistheman

no his kit is nothing like tht

  • Comment removed

  • @Laihoistheman the drumkit in the background is from the drummer of devildriver ( the headlining band in that tour )

  • Who else thought that HUGE drumset in the back belonged to the drummer from Periphery? hahah

  • i love periphery, but i reaaaalyy feel like the stage presence could be way better.

  • @evrolicious totally agree

  • @evrolicious Periphery is great example of a band that feels their music and writes music for the sake of music. a lot of bands nowadays focus too much on their look, stage presence, and writing music for kids to dance to, but that does nothing for someone musically inclined who focuses more on the sound and soul.

  • @evrolicious even though i do agree the video would be more enjoyable to see some more natural movements haha and sync head banging. and you gotta love the stomps

  • @evrolicious even though i do agree the video would be more enjoyable to see some more natural movements haha and sync head banging. and you gotta love the stomps and crowd interaction

  • @evrolicious the more difficult the music is, the more difficult it is to headband while playing it, just watch protest the hero before they were drunks haha, they just stand there and play cuz constantly tapping and sweeping is not easy to do while moving around and shit

  • @mickyfrombybh I like music that requires the musicians to stand still. My only exception is Dillinger.

  • Drummer sucks

  • @jsbuck99 uhhh what the fuck?

  • @jsbuck99 he's probably better at his age than you could ever be in 10 lifetimes.

  • @jsbuck99 im just keep this plain and simple. you have no penis. matt halpern is one of the most talented drummers of today.

  • @jsbuck99

    wtf why?

  • @jsbuck99 go die you jealous shitstain

  • who is the gay singer? this isnt the guy in the icarus lives video is it?

  • @ThePrinceVegeta7

Nope. This guy is before Spencer Sotelo.

  • i thought they had three guitarist?
