Three years have passed and these images still haunt me. Flooding was worse than wind damage. A 12-foot tidal surge flooded us from the bay when the eye passed the island. A small levee around the backside of the island would have saved 40,000 homes from being flooded. We've tried for years to get the City build a levee but they are too short-sighted. Today's storm surge is tomorrow's high tide! At least the surf get good once in a while. Check out my video from 37th Street!
I'm a Native Houstonian but I lived in Seabrook, TX at the time. My fiance and I left for Austin a day before the hurricane hit and we watched all the weather reports and footages on the storm. When I got back home, I was not able to return to my apt for a week. When I finally did, miraculously nothing happened to my very unit. All surrounding units and buildings were damaged in some way. I live in NE TX now and worry about the tornadoes.
For the first time in years I went down to Galveston last summer. And let me tell you i was devastated. Everything was gone, I have been going down there since I was a child. I cried b/c it wasnt the same as I remembered it. I hope Galveston County rebuilds.
I been there when i was 13 in 2003 it was really cool. I even stayed at the Flagship. Yikes....looks as bad as Katrina always....How is it like there now?
Some of the videos posted of Galveston were a total waste--pictures of people I don't even know blowing around in the wind for mega-minutes. This documentary did what I wanted it to do--it showed my guests from PA what Ike was all about.
That is an excellent documentary that you mention, @StarLite9152.
We have rented a beach house in Galveston every year since 2006. We want to support the community there and help the local businesses. The locals are very friendly, hard-working and brave! :-)
Great job! That is the best I've seen..I've cruised that wall many times on my bike. We should take care of it, respect it's strength and keep it clean.~
Great video with such moving photos. Amazing, but Galveston is quite ready for visitors now. We were there for summer vacation and had a lovely time. The residents there are impressively resilient.
We went over Spring Break and stayed at San Luis. There was still debris in the ocean like bags and metal, but the worse thing was The Flagship Hotel. It was so heart breaking to see that hotel destroyed. The windows were blown open and you could see the curtians of the rooms blowing outside. And the walls were gone so you could see inside the rooms. The never re opened. I'm going back next weekend cuz I luv Galveston so much!
The last time I visited Glaveston was in 2007. We stayed at Hotel Galvez, of course which was very nice. It saddens me to hear that much of the devastation has not impoved after almost seven months. Being from the South, I can assure you that they will rebuild and overcome this tragedy!

Very sad. I especially feel sorry for the residents that had their only homes on Galveston or Bolivar.

Maybe that seawall would have been more effective if there wasn't so much sand buildup. There is no way it is 16 feet high.
